The Shadows Cometh (Or Something Lousy Like That) is a Yoshi Bodyguards story, and is notable for being the first that was at Game & Watch. It is also the second of four stories Topmonhit made to wrap up some events he had occur during the Dark Ages.

Story
The Thousand Year Play
The story began when The Yoshi Bodyguards went to a play of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door at Toad Town. During the play, however, at the part where Mario battled against the Shadow Sirens, two Shadow Creatures suddenly appeared, interrupting the play. Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss followed them, while Vivian simply disappeared. Suddenly a Goomba Newscaster appeared, giving everyone there the news that a giant battleship had just appeared out at sea. A screen came down, showing it, and then the screen also showed the two shadow creatures along with Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss appearing on it. Oshy then came up on stage, explaining that he had been doing some research and recognized that battleship to be Atlantis. Apparently, Atlantis was in fact a battleship, not a city. The shadow creatures on Atlantis disappeared, and soon after the helicopter that had been filming the battleship was shot down. The YB decided to return to their HQ for the time, as no one was sure what was going to happen.
The Shadows Attack
Meanwhile, in a mysterious location, Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss were explainin the location of Vivian to someone. That someone was not very happy.
Back at the YB HQ, the next day the news reported that Atlantis had suddenly flown away from its previous spot. Nothing else happened the rest of the day, but the followin day, suddenly everyone had a rude awakening when Peach's Castle was attacked! Peach was abducted, and although Top complained that it wasn't their problemm, it soon was when Yoshi's Island began to be attacked. Before going, however, they realized the Crystal Stars had been destroyed earlier in the Dark Ages when the old YB HQ was destroyed.
When the YB arrived at Yoshi's Island, they saw Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss. After spying on them for a bit, they found out they were lookin for Vivian. Oshy suggested that she might be at Twilight Town, and so they hurried off to Twilight Town. At first, they couldn't find Vivian, but then she appeared from right under Top's feet. Koop fell in love with her. Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss then appeared out of nowhere and a short battle began.
The battle suddenly ended when Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss were torched with fire. Out of the shadows then came a shadow creature who introduced himself as Noshum. It would seem that he was a high-ranked shadow creature from the Shadow Dimension, but when he found out from Vivian that she wasn't going to be helping the Shadow Monarchy, he agreed to help them defeat the Shadow King. It was revealed that the Shadow King and Queen took over the Shadow dimension over 1000 years ago, and then the Shadow Queen went to Star World to try and invade it. When the Crystal Stars were destroyed, a portal opening to Star World was made in Atlantis, and the Shadow King learned of the Shadow Queen's defeat, and so they prepared to take over Star World.
And then another surprise appeared in the form of... KOOP'S PAPA! Er, Grodus! And the X-Nauts! Well, it was only Grodus' head. Grodus explained that he wanted revenge on the Shadow Creatures for turning him into just a head. Sneezier made the mistake of promising Grodus a new body if he helped them out, and so a deal was struck. Unfortunately, then a missile came heading straight for them.
Invading the Shadow
Apparently, the YB forgot all about Beldam, Marilyn and Doopliss, so they had escaped and warned the other shadow creatures about what was going on. Everyone but Mr. Game and Watch scattered, and Mr. Game and Watch was hit with the missile, badly injuring him and burning him. They all boarded the Echo Star to battle Atlantis, but the Echo Star was shot down, and it lost the left wing. Top ran off to his Star Ship, jumped in, and used the Ship Abilityminator to transfer the Missile ability to it. He then blasted ahead and slammed Atlantis with it, causing a massive explosion. Top's Star Ship fell to the ground upside-down, but Atlantis was still in the air. One more shot from the Echo Star brought it down... onto the Echo Star's right wing.
Once Atlantis was down, the X-Nauts rushed in and began attacking the shadow creatures in Atlantis. Once they were defeated, they hurried into the Shadow Dimension. There, they found it to be dark and shadowy black. They also found a massive force of shadow creatures; while the X-Nauts and Yoshi Clones battled them, the others hurried to the Crystal Shrine to get new Crystal Stars.
Before they were able to get to the Crystal Shrine, however, suddenly Gooptail, the goopiest dragon of all, appeared and attacked them. They were able to defeat it with water, and then proceeded to get 7 new Crystal Stars. After 6 appeared, no more appeared--apparently, they were short a worthy person. A beam of light appeared from the shrine and shot up and out of the area. The beam somehow left the Shadow Dimension, left Star World, and headed out for another planet. It went into a cave that was filled with ice, and then it hit someone.
Back at the shrine, suddenly someone began to appear: Sneen! And then a Quartz Crystal Star fell on his head, giving them seven Crystal Stars. Apparently, they had met Sneen a while ago, and after explaining what was going on to Sneen, he agreed to help out. Thus, they headed for the Shadow Castle to defeat the Shadow King. There, they saw that he had kidnapped Bowser, who had been attempting to kidnap Peach earlier when they kidnapped her instead. The Shadow King possessed Bowser, but the battle was overall pretty crappy. In the end, the Shadow King was destroyed and his castle was also destroyed. The Shadow Dimension was freed from the Shadow Monarchy, allowing the shadow creatures to be free.
When the YB returned to the HQ, they got the people who had been injured during the story some help, and Noshum and Vivian left. They rescued Peach, and everything was (more or less) back to normal. Except that Sneen decided to join the YB.
Original Story
The original story, like most stories around this time, had some differences with what is now considered canon; however, most differences for this story are small. Originally, Noshum's beta name, Shonum, was used, but after several posts it was changed to Noshum. In addition, the crystal stars were originally black, emerald, white, a different black, yellow, brown, and a different black again.

Trivia
- This story marks the first appearance of Noshum anywhere. It also marks the first appearance of the Shadow Sirens and Doopliss in the YB.
- Gooptail's first appearance was long ago in the early YB, when it attacked the HQ.
- The final boss being a possessed Bowser has been a tradition in the Mario & Luigi games, although this story gets its plot from a Paper Mario game.
Connections to Other Stories
- The plot of this story is set in motion when the Dark Ages began; when the Yoshi Bodyguards HQ was destroyed, the [[Crystal Stars were destroyed as well, opening the doorway between Star World and the Shadow Dimension.
- Later, in Oshy & Yisho: Partners in Lemon-Lime, Grodus would appear in the past with a plan to take over Star World in the past, revealing he still had evil intentions. In X-Chaos, the X-Nauts were the main villains, attempting to steal the Chaos Emeralds. Then, in The Blackest Days, the X-Nauts were one of the factions trying to take control of the planet. The Oddtastic Adventure had the X-Nauts striking a deal with the Shroobs, and in the end Grodus' body that Sneezier built for him was destroyed. He would not stay down, however, for in Grodus Rising the X-Nauts would finally get their big victory.
- Doopliss would later defect to the good side in The Shadows, the Prankster, and the Hat.
- Noshum and Vivian would make smaller appearances in a few stories after this, but their big role would come back in Unity of the Shadows, where they finally got married, and Beldam and Marilyn defected to the good side.
- Gooptail's next appearance would be in X-Chaos as the final boss.
- Sneen would remain as a YB after this story until Top, Oshy and Topper left; at that point, Sneen left to make a new lab at Fahr Outpost.
- Atlantis would remain outside Twilight Town until some Shadow Creatures got it up and running again in The Plasmoc Invasion; unfortunately, it was destroyed soon after by Chrono Demons.
