Grodus

From Yb Timeline

“That fool Omega… He thinks he can stop me now. The entire universe thinks that, apparently. They think we are beaten, just because we have failed to achieve the illusion of ultimate power. But in the search for that power, we have found another, far greater! For even in the ashes of defeat, we have been able to achieve victory. Not only is the seventh emerald now in our grasp, but the ultimate weapon of the Metal Army is now in our use. We have had much sacrifice, and yet we are stronger for it. Let it be known, from this day forth, that the Secret Society of the X-Nauts has achieved triumph over the most powerful forces in the universe. Let it be known, that Lord Grodus, has risen once again!”

Sir Grodus was the leader of the Secret Society of the X-Nauts. He was a ruthless and stunning leader, working behind the scenes to obtain his goals. He was not above making alliances with other factions to better the X-Naut's goals, such as the Shroobs, Shadow Sirens, and even conscripting mercenaries. While his goals were considered immoral at best, he had always seen them as for the betterment of the X-Nauts. He eventually met his demise at the hands of the Metal Army, ending the X-Nauts.

History

The Forming of the X-Nauts

It is unknown where the X-Nauts came from. Some say they originated from the furthest reaches of the Kriken Empire, somehow missed by the Kirken's destructive gaze. Others even think they came from beyond the reaches of the known galactic borders.

What is know is that Grodus founded the X-Nauts in order to create an empire run specifically by them. Grodus specifically thought that all strife and warfare would end if a unifying force united every nation under one rule. Despite their technological superiority, their numbers were too low to pose much of a threat in direct warfare. Thus, Grodus and his two lieutenants, Lord Crump and Admiral Stalvick, settled on using stealth and guile to obtain artifacts of great power. Only then could Grodus control the mighty nations of the universe.

For years, Grodus commanding the X-Nauts in this way, trying to obtain artifacts and relics that would grant them the upper hand against their enemies. However, these artifacts either did them no good or were unobtainable.

At the turn of the century, Grodus discovered a prophecy surrounding a powerful demon locked on the planet Star World. With Stalvick preoccupied with another mission, Grodus and Crump decided to make their move on the planet.

The Shadow Queen Incident

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

Vengeance and Conquest

Despite being merely a head and most of the X-Nauts gone, Grodus still wanted revenge. Not on Mario, however; on the Shadow Sirens and their queen, for decieving him. About a year later, when the Shadow Dimension invaded Star World, Grodus saw this as a perfect way to get his revenge. Swallowing what little pride he had left, he agreed to help The Yoshi Bodyguards take down the Shadow Creatures' main battleship so that they could get into the Shadow Dimension and defeat the leader, the Shadow King.

In exchange, Sneezier built for Grodus a new body (which, strangely enough, was never even a part of Grodus' original deal). Once the Shadow King was destroyed, Grodus and the remaining X-Nauts returned to Poshley Heights, where they had taken up residence. Grodus, however, did not plan to stay on the terms on which he got his new body (which was that he no longer do evil), for now that he had his revenge, he began a new plan. The X-Nauts developed an upgrade to his scepter to allow him time travel, and he traveled back in time to try and take over Star World in the past.

Grodus inexplicably arrived at Gisho Island's past, right when it was being invaded by Shoshis, and right when some YBs were traveling through Gisho Castle. Ignoring the mind-boggling probability of this occuring, the two fought after Grodus accidentally revealed his intentions (having not realized they were there). The Scepter was damaged, sending Grodus back to the present. With his evil tenancies found out, he and the X-Nauts left Poshley Heights to locate a more isolated base.

The Chaos Emeralds

The Chaos Emeralds had been scattered across Star World a couple months before Grodus took note of it. Thus, a year and a half after hiding out in Joke's End (after kicking Jojora out), the X-Nauts moved to Gisho Castle, where they kidnapped Princess Apricot, who had found a Chaos Emerald. Grodus then sent Lord Crump to Toadwood Forest to locate another emerald. He also hired Dryler, Lakeep and Zzub of Team Flash to help out, but learned that the YB had beaten them to it. The X-Nauts and YB fought one another for the emeralds, until the YB had all but the one the X-Nauts held.

Grodus had Lord Crump play the same role he did during the Shadow Queen incident, allowing the YB to get all the emeralds, but then stealing them from them when they encountered him on his new battleship. Just before Grodus could use them, however, King Rexor fell through the roof inexplicably, and he and Dr. Tyrato fought the YB. This gave Grodus enough time to grab the emeralds, but before he could activate them the ship was rocked by an attack and the emeralds fell out into the atmosphere. Dr. Eggman, Tabbir "Whirl", and Slike F. Elion then appeared, all vying for the emeralds, which ended in them scattering once more.

Soon after, Grodus sent Lord Crump to Chronis as a final chance; the planet had over half a dozen factions attempting to control it, and Lord Crump and the X-Nauts were defeated once more. Thus, Grodus decided to fire Crump, although the one good thing to come out of Chronis is while returning, Crump encountered the Shroobs, and they struck a partnership with them. Grodus learned of the Shroobs' fallen princess, and decided to kidnap Mario, disrupting a plan of Bowser's at the time. Once Mario was kidnapped, the Shroobs went to retrieve the remains of their princess, a simple mushroom.

At this time, Mario's brother, Luigi, as well as Yoshi made an attempt to find Mario. Grodus sent Crump to deal with them by rigging his Magnus von Grapple with a time bomb, eliminating all three... or so he thought: Somehow Luigi made it onto the X-Naut/Shroob ship, but he was too late as Mario was fed the Princess Shroob mushroom and Shroobified. Luigi and a team he had with him fought Grodus and Shrario, and in the end they were defeated and Mario was saved.

It was at that time, however, that Dr. Eggman smashed his way into the ship, demanding to know the location of the Chaos Emerald on Star World. It was accidentally revealed to him the YB had it, and Eggman flew off, destroying the ship in the process. Grodus and the X-Nauts escaped, and their partnership with the Shroobs was terminated and Grodus decided to join the emerald search as well, leaving for Popstar where he defeated King Dedede and took the emerald on the planet; he then absorbed Dedede into his scepter, gaining Dedede's abilities with it.

During this time, Grodus had sent a portion of his fleet in order to track the seventh emerald, which was absent from all galactic scans and deemed too much effort by the other factions. To this he ordered his close friend, Admiral Stalvick, to track the emerald, which was discovered to have been taken by the Metal Army. Grodus oversaw the sneak attack on Star World, as well as a raid on the Renton Shipyards.

Finally, he ordered the attack on Mobius, to hit Dr. Eggman's base while he was away and gain what research he had on the emeralds. However, this was done during a Metal Army invasion. Eggman unleashed a secret weapon to disrupt the Metal Army's Artificial Intelligence. Grodus was convinced by a conscript commander, named Litera, to destroy the disruptor, which Stalvick vehemently argued against. They then attempted to apprehend a Mobian scientist who knew the location of the stolen emerald, Whirl. After a long chase involving the near destruction of Mobius and the Yoshi Bodyguard Coshi, Grodus finally found the location of the last emerald; Alinos, the core of the Metal Army's Steel Legion Fleet.

Meanwhile Grodus detected another emerald flying near Popstar, and attacked the Hag 2, which Gruntilda was flying. He defeated her, as well as Popple and Bowser who had inexplicably gotten on the ship. With two emeralds and four absorbed characters, Grodus returned to Star World and defeated Dr. Eggman, Cackletta and Fawful, taking their three emeralds. He now had 5 and 7 characters, and easily defeated Mario, Luigi and Yoshi, taking their emeralds. He was nearly invincible now, but with a massive team of characters, he was eventually defeated, and his body was destroyed once more.

Rise From the Ashes

Grodus was utterly defeated, but managed to escape Star World with a small portion of his X-Nauts. However, when he linked up with his devastated war fleet, he found that Stalvick had abandoned a portion of his troops at the Yoshi Bodyguard base during the final push to apprehend Coshi and Whirl. Strickened with grief, Grodus tracked Stalvick to the moon of the planet Hylia. There, he found that Stalvick had reconstructed the AI Disruptor, disobeying Grodus's direct order to destroy the device. Litera, now second in command, convinced Grodus Stalvick needed to be dispatched.

Grodus sent conscripts to assassinate the Admiral, who succeeded. In his last breath, however, Stalvick told Grodus that Litera was really the traitor, that he was working to disrupt their operations by convincing them to destroy the AI Disruptor and it was really he that allowed the Metal Army to overrun them in the last battle against the Yoshi Bodyguards. Stalvick pleaded that the Disruptor be used to take the last emerald, and finish their mission. With that Stalvick died.

Grodus was infuriated, and found that Litera had vanished after the assassination of Stalvick. Then the disruptor's core was sent to overload, and Metal Army forces appeared from nowhere to block the route to the core. This confirmed Grodus's suspicions, as he ordered his conscripts and the X-Nauts loyal to Stalvick to take the core. They succeeded, and the AI Disruptor was in Grodus's hands. With all else lost, Grodus settled on one final gambit; he would raid Alinos and take the emerald.

The AI Disruptor hit Alinos, disabling 60% of the Metal Army defenders. Using his elite conscripts, Grodus disabled key targets, even a Metal Army Titan-Champion. He moved in on a final assault for the main Metal Army citadel, which housed the emerald. When a squad of Metal Army champions nearly repelled them, Grodus himself joined the fray, supplied with a new body from the conscript Eli. He broke through the Metal Army defends, and captured the citadel for his own.

While inside, Grodus noticed far more than the emerald. The entire base was a supercomputer, designed to control the Metal Army forces under a single AI. It was incomplete, however, and lacked a core. The emerald was being used to power the AI, and was diluted by the sheer scale of the power being drawn, which, coupled with the distance from the main conflict and the Metal Army's jammers, prevented anyone from finding the emerald except those who had scanned for its individual energy signature, using a broad extra-galactic search. Whirl was the only one who had recorded such energy signatures.

Grodus ordered that the incomplete AI core be replaced with his own personal AI, TEC-X3. Meanwhile, an X-Naut informed him that the remaining Metal Army forces had gathered outside the citadel. Grodus came to meet them, finding Doctor Albert, who stole the emerald in the first place, [[Litera, who revealed himself to be a disguised Metal Army cyborg, and Omega, future ruler of the Metal Army. Omega taunted Grodus, stating that he would be back to take his citadel. The Metal Lord then retreated through a portal.

Grodus returned to his Citadel of Ultima, reactivating it. He allowed his Conscripts to take leave (their service terminated as their contract was created by Litera), and began the process of converting the Metal Army forces in their area to his control.

Grodus then bided his time, waiting for the moment when the Metal Army fell and he would be able to take full control of their forces. This waiting was only interuppted when Slike invaded his keep, taking the emerald for himself. Grodus attempted to stop him, but with the keep's defenses incomplete and most of his forces hidden, he was unable. The chaos emerald later returned to Alinos (for an unknown reason) and Grodus reactivated his citadel, completing the defensive network.

The Rise and Fall of the X-Nauts

Eventually, the Metal Army did fall, giving Grodus a window of opportunity. He activated his AI Disruptor, focusing its full power on individual Metal Army bases and fleets. After the mechs were deactivated, he would use the Citadel to revert them to his control. With the Metal Army now fragmented, very few were able to resist the call of Grodus.

He then began a campaign of galactic conquest. Grodus's forces poured from the Tetra Galaxy, moving into the Outer Rim. After he captured the planet of Mintop, he was able to launch a series of attacks against the Galactic Federation, and even gaining headway against the Dark Perforation Crusade, which was beginning to invade portions of the Outer Rim at the time. Dissatisfied enemies of Grodus banded together under Omega, notably portions of the Dark Perforation and the forces of Conrad the Conqueror. Ein, who was displaced by the X-Naut's invasion, and the Witchy Fury Trio, who lost against Grodus in the scramble for the Chaos Emeralds, joined this alliance too, which came to be known as the Metal Crusade.

The Metal Crusade destroyed the AI Disruptor on the moon of Hylia, thus giving Omega's Metal Army a chance to engage Grodus's. The remaining Metal Army was stuck in a civil war, Grodus on one side, Omega on the other. Omega attacked the X-Nauts on Mintop, taking Grodus's power base away from him and cutting off his invasion force. Enraged, Grodus ordered an all out assault on Omega's fortress using a fleet of captured Metal Army forces. However, the planet was far too distant for Grodus to control directly, so he sent a force of X-Nauts at the center of the force to coordinate the attack. The battle nearly destroyed Omega's citadel, all attempts to counter being foiled by superior numbers. But in the end, Omega found and destroyed the X-Naut camp coordinating the attack and replaying the Citadel's orders. The remaining forces fell into disarray.

Omega then immediatly took all of his forces and stormed Alinos. The battle was feirce, and Omega himself attempted to breech his defenses the same way Slike did before. Grodus was ready, and sprung a series of traps on them. Omega broke through easily, but by the time he stormed the throne room, Grodus had already fallen back with what few forces were left, reforming his fleet.

Omega fully reactivated the Citadel of Ultima, making it a mobile floating fortress. As the Metal Army (who had briefly fought off a coup immediately following the battle) retreated from the planet, Grodus struck. He sent all of his forces against the keep, using restriction codes ingrained in TEC-X3 to deactivate the keep's defenses. At the same time, Conrad the Conqueror's fleet appeared, wanting revenge for Omega's betrayal on Mintop, and an [[Alliance of Worlds] fleet under Subsourian the Dark came to finish the battle. Grodus, however, would not ally with Conrad, who had disrupted his operations on Mintop, or Subsourian, who was part of the Yoshi Bodyguards that constantly harassed him. The three fleets began fighting one another, giving Omega the chance to attack Grodus's fleet personally.

Grodus put up a fight, trapping Omega and attempting to flank him. But Omega's raw power won through to Grodus's tactics. With half of his fleet destroyed, Grodus offered terms of surrender. However, Omega refused, stating that he should retreat with the scraps of his fleet, and that he would be coming after the battle to hunt them down to the last.

Grodus retreated, knowing he would be unable to outrun Omega's fleet. He gazed over his last journal entry, which stated his regrets for failing the X-Nauts, and his regrets for killing his best friend, Stalvick. He wanted him to be remembered as someone who attempted to change the universe for the better, to unite everyone under one rule and end fighting.

With that, Grodus took out a small pistol and shot himself.
