Shadow Creatures are, as their name implies, creatures of shadow. They range in various sizes (from feeble, to strong, to large), and are usually purple. They also seem to like hats. Most, if not all, are skilled in dark magic, and in fact are said to be born from dark magic. They apparently all come from, and most reside in, the Shadow Dimension. They were once all ruled by a Shadow Monarchy, but the monarchy was destroyed and they became more of a democracy (although it isn't stated if they have an actual form of government or not in their dimension).

History
The Shadow Monarchy
No one is sure when the shadow Creatures or the Shadow Dimension first came about, not even the shadow creatures themselves. It is likely that it has existed as long as dark magic has, however. Long ago the Shadow Dimension was taken over by the Shadow Monarchy, a group of shadow creatures who claimed to be royalty. They held magic powerful enough to subdue the other shadow creatures, and by taking the ancient Crystal Stars, seven gems imbued with powerful magic, they were able to affirm their rule. However, as time passed the Shadow Monarchy wanted more power, and so a gate to the dimension that the Shadow Dimension resided in was opened and the Shadow Queen, as well as some of her most trusted subjects, went on to attempt to conquer this world.
The Shadow Queen brought with her the Crystal Stars, but they were stolen by four heroes who then defeated her; the Shadow Queen was locked away, and the shadow creatures she brought in was diminished to only three: Vivian, Beldam and Marilyn. News of this would not reach the Shadow Dimension for over one thousand years, however, after the Shadow Queen's second coming (which was stopped by Mario; in addition, Vivian betrayed Beldam and joined Mario). When a new opening to the Shadow Dimension was created through Atlantis, word of the Shadow Queen's demise reached the Shadow Dimension by Beldam and Marilyn, the Shadow King declared a second war with the full brunt of the Shadow Dimension.
One of the scribes of the Shadow King, Noshum, went to find Vivian, as they were friends prior to Vivian's leaving the Shadow Dimension. Seeing that Vivian had made her decision, Noshum agreed to help her and The Yoshi Bodyguards by creating new Crystal Stars (as the old ones had been destroyed earlier). They made their way to a secret part of the Shadow Dimension and created seven new Crystal Stars that were used to finally destroy the Shadow King, freeing the Shadow Dimension from his grip.

- The name "Shadow Creature" was coined by Topmonhit, as it is never specifically stated in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door what their species name is, and in fact Super Mario Wiki lists their species as simply "Shadow".
