[edit] Personality
- As a Nobody, Roxas isn't supposed to have a heart or feel emotions--and when he's feeling stubborn about it, he'll try to adopt that stoicism. But really he feels a lot of things; or at least, he has an excellent memory of how to feel. He's introverted and somewhat self-centered, but he likes to be around what friends he has. At his core he's optimistic and endearingly naive, but he'll only show that side to close friends, since he doesn't like to be seen as a dork. The more likely a person seems to pick on him, the more likely Roxas is to hide behind sarcasm. It's generally pretty easy to get a reaction out of him, though, and he can be especially susceptible to frustration and jealousy. He's never felt he fit in anywhere, so he can be prone to angst when left alone too long.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
- Roxas is one of a handful of people who can wield a keyblade, and is skilled enough in swordplay to handle two at once. He's very agile, and strong despite his small frame. Magic-wise, he had control over the element of light, and as a Nobody, could also utilize the power of darkness to create portals between worlds. In Manhattan, though, he's restricted to a fraction of his elemental powers and one keyblade.
[edit] History
- Roxas came into existence when Sora turned into a Heartless at Hollow Bastion and essentially split into two beings--Heartless and Nobody. Because of Sora's short time in the form of a Heartless, though, Roxas kept no clear memories from his time spent as a part of Sora, just a collection of feelings and vague familiarities. Manifesting in Twilight Town, he was quickly discovered by Xemnas, the leader of Organization XIII, given his name, and recruited into that group of Nobodies. As a wielder of the keyblade, he was invaluable to the Organization, as he could collect hearts from the Heartless, sending them to Kingdom Hearts, which was how the Organization strove to regain their lost emotions.
- Roxas, however, was kept pretty much out of the loop, not trusted as the youngest and newest member of the Organization. Most of its members didn't deign to get to know him, but the Organization's number VIII took a particular interest in him, and the two became best friends, though the bond was always stronger on Axel's side. For a while, Axel was what kept Roxas anchored. Confronted with the ideas that he had no heart and existed in a world that saw his creation as a mistake, it was comforting to have someone who thought well of him; it was a validation.
- But it wasn't really enough. Frustrated by the incompleteness felt by all Nobodies and by his utter ignorance about himself, Roxas decided to leave the Organization to search for answers. In particular he wanted to learn why he had the keyblade, and to meet his other if he could. However, he ran into trouble when Ansem and Riku discovered him, and thought he was needed to waken Sora from his year-long sleep. After an initial failure, Riku defeated him, and Ansem trapped him in a fake Twilight Town, replacing his memories so he would not think to protest the imprisonment.
- Roxas spent only a short time in this world, trying to enjoy a summer vacation with newly-granted friends but interrupted constantly by the real world. It began with dreams of Sora's past; as Namine restored the memories she'd taken from Sora, Roxas's memory was also affected, and he began to recall his other's life for the first time--not that he knew he had an other at this point. When the Organization discovered his location, they sent Axel to either retrieve him, or terminate him if he refused to cooperate. This in turn forced Ansem to speed up the timetable to waken Sora, and Roxas had no idea where to turn. On the one hand, his "best friend" who he couldn't remember and who worked for some dubious organization, and on the other, some man employing a mysterious girl who wanted him to meet Sora. He struggled not to cooperate with either party, but in the end his anger towards the manipulative Ansem led him to Sora. Once they met, Roxas again became a part of him.
- Strangely, though, he managed to retain his own identity within Sora for a long time. Long enough to see Axel fade away, giving his life for Sora. Jealous that his friend had betrayed the Organization for his other but not him, Roxas managed to confront Sora within his mind. Roxas fought him only to lose--to the better person, he decided. After that, he meant to fade away himself, to go back into Sora without protest. But it didn't quite happen that way.
[edit] In Manhattan
- Unlike most newcomers to Manhattan, Roxas was actually happy to be there; it meant he was himself again, outside the scope of the Organization, and free to pass himself off as whole. This newfound freedom acted as a good counterbalance to Axel's all-too-recent death. He took an immediate dislike to most of his roommates (Kakuzu attacking him on first sight did not help), finding them all crazy in their own ways. Orihime, by contrast, he took an immediate liking to and, as his only friend in Manhattan, he quickly became very protective of her.
- His mood went more or less downhill from the beginning, what with not getting along with his roommates. Moreover, he had less than a week before both Xemnas and Sora showed up in Manhattan. Xemnas, he could deal with, the guy just pissed him off. Sora being there, however, frightened him; if the two of them met, he was convinced that would be the end for him, so he took to staying exclusively in his apartment to avoid Sora.
- Less than a week after his arrival, Roxas was around to experience the first zombie attack in the Flux Gaters' memory. Although he'd expected to stay barricaded in the apartment with Orihime, her friend Tatsuki and consequently Reno insisted on her going to ride it out with them. Not about to let anything happen to either Orihime or Reno (who still reminded him so much of Axel), he went with to protect them along the way, efforts which probably went overlooked.
- During the infamous water incident some days later, Roxas spent most of the time being excessively paranoid and argumentative with anyone he didn't consider a friend. The rest of the time he tried to look after Orihime, who kept taking her shirt off, but feels he failed in the end, since she ended up sleeping with Dante and then the two of them got together.
- December 12 marked the day when the guards decided the Flux Gate kids needed to be forced to school, and the day Roxas finally ran into Sora. Both of them had to be dragged there, and they literally bumped into each other in the classroom, resulting in a few long minutes of terrible fear for Roxas, thinking he was going to disappear again. However, contrary to their expectations, nothing happened, and the realization that they could be around each other without Roxas vanishing led to an even closer bond between the two.
- Christmas time was easily the peak of his good mood. Never having celebrated when with the Organization, and naturally believing in Santa (Sora's met him, after all), he was really excited for it. He spent Christmas Eve carolling and after nightfall went up on the roof with Sora, Maes, and Rinali looking out for Santa. He ended up getting a lot more presents than he expected, making him a little more open to calling people friends.
- Things swiftly went back downhill after Christmas, with him upsetting Orihime for the umpteenth time without understanding why. And not long after they managed to get on good terms again, zombies decided to attack again. After making sure Orihime had Dante and Tatsuki around to look after her, Roxas went out to find Sora and fight with him, worried because Rinali was worried and he really didn't want to lose his Other. This attack was far worse than before, and landed most of Roxas's friends in the hospital, as well as getting Roxas in quarantine for a few days. Once he got out, he hung around a few days longer to visit his recovering friends. Visiting Rinali in Sora's stead, he started to get to know her on his own terms rather than as a friend of Sora's, and unfortunately got himself caught up in the continuing and stressful drama of Rinali and Maes's break-up.
- On the other hand, Orihime decided he needed to smile more and insisted on his going on three "non-dates," for whom he picked her, Maytag, and Al (simply because his name started with an A). He hasn't gone on them all yet, but with Axel suddenly showing up in the midst of this, his social life suddenly seems a lot busier to him.
[edit] Relationships
[edit] Friends
- Axel - Roxas's best friend, a position that could never be taken by anyone else. There are a lot of issues here, though. Roxas feels severely guilty, not so much for leaving Axel behind when he left the Organization, but for not believing he would care. He feels this was the first in a number of screw-ups he made, including forgetting Axel, not trusting him, and wounding him when they fought before Roxas went back into Sora. However, it would take a lot to get him to apologize since he's simultaneously furious about Axel sacrificing himself for Sora--one, because Roxas believes he did it for Sora, and two, because he feels it was entirely unnecessary and never wanted to have to watch Axel die. But whether or not he can manage to push these things to the back of his mind, Axel is the person who can make him feel the strongest about anything. Axel's also the easiest person for Roxas to just talk to. Axel knows him, so he doesn't have to worry about letting anything slip.
- Sora - Roxas's somebody, his other half. Roxas sees him as the better person, more optimistic and, well, kind-hearted in a way that Roxas can't emulate without a heart of his own. He likes and envies Sora, but has no wish to be part of him again and lose his own identity, so he was beyond relieved when they discovered they could be around each other without becoming one again. Having been Sora, Roxas naturally feels very close to him, and he's the only person he won't really lie to. He's also one of the few people who can almost always cheer him up. Roxas tells people they're brothers, and tends to look after Sora as though they are. Sora isn't exactly the bright one of the two, after all.
- Orihime Inoue - Roommate. Cheerful, kind of silly, and far too nice for her own good. Roxas admires her capacity for emotion, but at the same time he has no comprehension of her sensitivity and seems to make her cry a lot. He wishes he knew how to be nicer to her, and he tends to get very protective of her instead, since he at least knows how to be a jerk to people who might hurt her. He likes hanging out with her, and she can often cheer him up, though she also has a tendency to make him feel awkward with abrupt hugs and even kissing him (twice now!). He thinks, if he had a heart, he might have a crush on her, but contrary to Sora's convictions, he doesn't, and with her having a boyfriend, he actually doesn't consider it often.
- Maytag - She has a teasing, cheerful kind of attitude, and seems to have an almost insatiable curiosity. She's weird and kind of a pervert, but she doesn't condescend and seems earnestly friendly so Roxas is slowly adjusting to her. She's a good listener when the subject turns serious though, and it means more to him than he'd admit that she considers him a friend. Somehow she's one of the few people he feels remotely comfortable discussing Axel with.
- Maes Hughes - Roxas hasn't yet made up his mind whether or not Maes is actually crazy, but he certainly acts like it a lot of the time. Apparently they both have "pretentious fire-obsessed asshole" friends, and sometimes Maes is surprisingly easy to talk to, but Roxas has been slow to trust him. He has a tendency to poke his nose into everyone's business but keep them out of his own. Roxas is starting to consider Maes a friend, but he's still not about to confide much unless Maes stops keeping people at a distance.
- Rinali Li - She and Sora really liked each other for a while, but with Kairi and Maes, it's just made things really complicated and Rinali didn't come out of it with much. As Sora's Other, Roxas feels awkward around her because of all that, but at the same time, the same things Sora likes about her make it easy for Roxas to get along with her. She's also been really open with him to the extent that he can't help reciprocating a little, and he thinks she's more than she gives herself credit for. Because Maes is also his friend, he's been trying to get them to talk to each other again, and it seems to have worked somewhat, though he's afraid it's hurt his relationship with the two of them.
- Kairi - Roxas is a little uncertain about interacting with her, since he remembers having strong feelings for her as Sora but as Roxas he's only just met her. Moreover, she's been very kind to him and immediately adopted him as a close friend, rather than treating him as a relative stranger or worse, thinking he belongs as part of Sora. Probably it has something to do with Namine, but it still surprises him. He worries that her being here will draw Sora away from him, a fear which doesn't seem entirely unfounded, as they've been together almost constantly since her arrival.
[edit] Acquaintances
- Alphonse Elric - They seem to have a lot in common, and not just the usual things but a lot of what Roxas has felt as a Nobody. He's curious to learn more about Al's situation, but at the same time talking to him always seems to bring bad memories to mind.
- Reno - He looks and sounds a lot like Axel, so Roxas is naturally drawn to him. But Roxas doesn't have any similar counterpart from Reno's perspective, so the blond's interest has gone largely unreciprocated, and he's come to accept they'll probably never be more than casual friends. He likes talking to him, though, and certain of Reno's actions are still liable to spark a reaction from Roxas like he'd give Axel.
- Tamaki Suou - A weird, friendly, excessively melodramatic guy. He's made a few hurtful blunders, but Roxas thinks he's okay, he just doesn't know how to deal with his enthusiasm.
- Gertrude Yorkes - She has a dinosaur-friend, which is a little weird, but really no weirder than any of Sora's friends. She seems like a practical and sane person, if pretty pessimistic sometimes, and they get along pretty well. She's one of the handful of people who knows Roxas doesn't have a heart, and she doesn't seem to think it's a big deal.
- Tatsuki Arisawa - Orihime's close friend and very protective of her, so she must be a good person. She also has fists of steel, or something, but at least she seems to think okay of Roxas these days; he'd rather stay on her good side. He's a little jealous of her apparent importance to and closeness with Reno.
- Lady - The only one of Roxas's teachers he interacts with outside of school (not that he goes very often). They talk on equal footing though, which he likes.
- Edward Elric - Al's big brother. They haven't spoken much until their recent time in hospital quarantine, but they seem to closer in personality and get along pretty well.
- Grimmjow Jeagerjaques - He's different from the other Arrancar in that he acts as an individual, with no mention of Aizen or any loyalty to his apparent superiors. Roxas isn't about to trust him, especially with Orihime warning about him, but he can't help liking him better than the others and even feels a certain affinity to him. He's by no means a thinker like Roxas, but he's failed someone, too, even if Roxas doesn't know how.
- Yukino Miyazawa - Organizer for Tamaki's group. Roxas doesn't know her well, but she seems sensible, if a little optimistic.
- Deesha Barry - He got Roxas something for Christmas despite Roxas barely knowing his name, so he feels obligated to get to know the guy better. Which, despite Deesha seeming like a nice guy, has turned out to be difficult because of Bakura.
- Rabi - He seems like a nice enough guy. His curiosity doesn't bother Roxas, since he's apparently a recorder of history, isn't sneaky about asking questions, and doesn't seem to mind answering questions in return.
- Toushirou Hitsugaya - One of the few decent people from Orihime's world, and also one of those people who disappeared for a while and forgot having been in Manhattan before. He still seems like a sensible, pretty straightforward kind of guy.
- Haku - A polite kid who doesn't seem to have a problem with going to school. He's proposed the two of them study together, but they haven't really spoken much.
- Drizzt Do'Urden - A Drow, which apparently carries a bad reputation on Drizzt's world. Roxas could care less about that part. He seems like the serious kind of guy, maybe a little too much.
- Roy Mustang - Maes's best friend. Roxas is curious to see what kind of person Maes would have for a best friend, but so far Roy's been pretty subdued.
- Obito Uchiha - Someone who died protecting his friend, something Roxas is a little uncomfortable with. They seem to view things differently, and Roxas feels like Obito probably wouldn't like him much if they knew each other better.
- Naruto Uzumaki - The kid Kakuzu mistook Roxas for. And if someone wants to kill him, Roxas isn't about to trust him 100%. He seems like he has a good heart, but he's not as light-hearted and goofy as he seemed when Roxas first met him.
- Allen Walker - A kid who spent some time in their apartment after hurting his arm. He seems like kind of a grump.
- Nero - Looks like Dante, but apparently isn't too much like him. Thank god.
- Yoruichi Shihoin - She kind of scares him. For one thing, she has no concept of modesty and seems to enjoy freaking him out with her nakedness. For another, she says he and Sora smell like the same person.
- Kuukaku Shiba - Kind of crazy, but somehow pretty straightforward and still not as scary as Larxene. Bizarrely, she's on the teaching staff.
- Komui Li - Roommate. The new crazy guy to replace Tyki. He's more obviously crazy, but he seems pretty focused on his little sister, so he doesn't bother Roxas much.
- Hiko Seijuro - He's called Roxas a rurouni, throwing him off a little on what to think of this guy. He's a condescending jerk, but not to everyone and he's not an idiot. The whole shudo discussion has made Roxas a little uncomfortable around him.
- Rhode Kamelot - She wants Roxas to light himself on fire and is consistantly sadistic otherwise, but Roxas is used to this kind of thing from the Organization. He feels it's just as likely to be an act as the truth, particularly after learning something about her nightmares and role as some kind of "sacrifice" in the end of the world. She just has worse trust issues than Roxas.
- Haine Rammsteiner - Roommate. Haine has apparently shown up again, but now grown up (and being that much taller now hasn't earned him any points) and lacking any memory of having been here before. Roxas still finds him kind of a stuck-up jerk, but he doesn't seem quite as unsociable as his younger self. Maybe they'll manage to get along better this time. Or maybe they'll just ignore each other.
- Ibitsu Kakuzu - Roommate. Did not exactly get off on the best foot, what with Kakuzu mistaking him for someone else and trying to kill him. He seems a lot more stable now, but that doesn't mean Roxas likes him any better. His interest in seemingly occult things and some of his darker comments make Roxas wary of him, and he's annoyed with how the guy seems to disapprove of him and yet doesn't explain anything. They manage to get along somewhat grudgingly, though they tend to disagree on most things.
- Tiki Mick - A former roommate who disappeared and has now returned without any prior memories of Manhattan. Roxas hasn't interacted with him much in this incarnation, but he didn't like him much before, finding him patronizing and falsely friendly. He doesn't expect that to change.
- Deadpool - Crazy man who can't die. Best to avoid him. Although he did give Roxas Fujin's eyepatch.
- Jayne Cobb - Not the brightest guy in the world, and one of those people who thinks Roxas hasn't hit puberty yet, much to his annoyance.
- Gnarl - Servant to some overlord of darkness, and seems to think himself superior to most others.
- Anko Mitarashi - One of the trio who had sex in their bathroom, and the one to brag about it. He'd never admit it, but Roxas is a little scared of her.
- Xellos - His attitude makes Roxas uncomfortable and standoffish, since most of it seems affected in the same way some of the Organization members pretended to feel in order to manipulate those who actually could. He thinks Xellos probably uses emotions the same way, but Sora insists on being friends with and defending the guy. And admittedly, some part of Roxas does wonder if Xellos is more like he and Axel, pretending to feel because it's the closest they can get to the real thing.
- Yami no Bakura - A psycho with a superiority complex who sees only the worst in people and gets a kick out of spreading his particular version of the truth. Since he's taken up residence in Deesha's body, Roxas has only come to dislike him more, through a weird sort of jealousy. After all, Roxas was never able to take control of Sora the way Bakura can take control of Deesha's body, and yet the guy complains.
[edit] Black List
- Xemnas - Organization XIII's Superior, the man who both gave Roxas his name and later gave the orders to kill him if he refused to return. Roxas hates him in particular for delegating this job to Axel. Now that they're on a new world, Xemnas has abandoned the idea of killing Roxas in favor of incorporating him back into the defunct Organization and using him. Roxas, naturally, wants no part of this. They disagree on pretty much everything, particularly how to view their supposedly non-existant emotions.
- Dante Sparda - Roxas used to think he was okay, but since he took advantage of Orihime during the water crisis (it doesn't matter to Roxas that Dante was drugged up, too), he pretty much despises the guy. It doesn't help that Orihime agreed to date Dante, or that Dante thinks Roxas is jealous. He doesn't trust Dante in the least, thinks he's a huge pervert, and thinks it's bullshit that Dante actually likes Orihime like he says.
