Kairi is a fun loving, energetic girl who's heart shines brighter then any star in the sky. She is the least 'proper' of all the Princesses of the Heart, having no problem traipsing about the beach, taking part in her male friends rough adventures, often instigating competitions between them. She is friendly, sometimes overly so. She is loyal, as well as stubborn to a point. Sometimes, it seems she lets the happiness of others overrule her own.
Being forced to grow up as a result of the events she's experienced in the past few years of her life has made Kairi more mature. Her voice is steady, and she does not giggle after every sentence she says. She is far braver the even her friends give her credit for, willing to leap into battle to save them if needed. Kairi becomes more resolute and takes on a serious tone, which is almost sharply contrasted to her friend Selphie, and even Sora at times. Deep down, she is still the Kairi they know, and always will be.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
As a Princess of the Heart, she has no darkness in her heart. She can reach into the darkness and return someone's lost heart to them, though this isn't something she knows that she can do. It only happened in a moment of desperation to call back Sora.
She can see into the heart of someone and know who they are, regardless of what they may look like or act like on the outside. She knew Riku even though he looked like Ansem's Heartless, and was able to show Sora the truth as well by taking both their hands.
There as been some allusion to the fact that the Princesses are empathic since they can see into peoples hearts, feeling the emotions from the hearts of people as well as the heart of a world.

When Kairi was very young, she lived in Hollow Bastion. Ansem sent her away as an experiment to test whether or not she had the power of the seven Princesses of Heart, and she ended up at Destiny Islands the night of a meteor shower. Kairi had no recollection of where she was from what so ever.
Kairi was enjoying her life on Destiny Islands with her two best friends, Sora and Riku. She was happy being there, but the group of friends begins to wonder about other worlds outside Destiny Islands. Thanks to Kairi�s arrival, Riku starts to think about why they were placed in their world as opposed to others and his desire to visit other worlds sparked. Sora, Riku and Kairi decide to make a raft and travel to see other worlds together. Once preparations are completed, they go home for the night, planning to set off the next day.
Unfortunately, things do not go exactly according to plan. A strange storm hits Destiny Islands in the evening, and all three friends go to the set of islands in order to see what the status of their raft is. They end up being separated, scattered to different worlds as their own was devoured by the encroaching darkness. Riku and Sora meet up first. After feeling like he had been replaced with Sora�s new friends, Riku sets off once again in order to find Kairi. With the help of Maleficent, Riku is able to find her, but soon realizes that she has lost her heart. Kairi is in a trance-like state and is unable to move on her own. She simply stares off into space, and cannot respond to any kind of stimulation.
Riku keeps her close to him and searches endlessly for her heart. Sora, also looking for Kairi, is unaware that she is missing her heart. Finally, Riku, with the help of Ansem, realizes where Kairi�s heart is. Once Sora arrives at Hollow Bastion, Riku tells him that Kairi�s heart is within Sora�s. Riku wields a Keyblade that can unlock people�s hearts, and plans on using it on Sora in order to free Kairi�s. Sora defeats him, and decides to impale himself with the Keyblade anyway in order for her heart to return to her body. Kairi regains consciousness once her heart becomes part of her body again, and she runs to catch falling Sora. He disappears into points of light before she can catch him, but she refuses to let him go. After being followed by a Heartless, Kairi realizes that it is really Sora and protects him from being attacked. In doing so, Sora is able to regain his human form, and they go to Traverse Town in order to think of what to do next.
Once Kairi gives in to not being able to go and says she will wait for Sora to return with Riku, she gives Sora her lucky charm in order to make him promise her he will give it back. She knows even though they will be apart again, she is always with him wherever he goes.
After Sora defeats Ansem, he and Kairi are on two small pieces of land elevated in the air. They make a promise that Sora will come back to Destiny Islands as soon as he finds Riku. The two hold on to each other�s hand until they physically cannot, as the ground beneath them begins to get separated.
A year later, Kairi is affected by Naminé�s messing with Sora�s memories. She cannot remember Sora�s name and barely anything about him at all. She is seen walking down a road at dusk, when Selphie calls out to her in order to make her wait up. Selphie asks if Kairi will come to the island with her since Tidus and Wakka will not, but Kairi politely refuses. She can no longer hear Sora�s voice down there, and since she feels very guilty for not remembering him, she promises not to go back to the island until she remembers everything about him. Selphie questions her to think if she made him up, but she knows that she did not. The feelings were too strong.
It wasn't until Sora was nearly awake from his slumber that she finally remembered, and she went out to the beach and set free a bottle containing a note for him with the belief that if she wished hard enough it will reach him.
Much later, Kairi is standing at the beach again wondering if simply waiting for Sora and Riku to come back is good enough. Axel then appears telling her that he is a friend of Sora�s and that he can take her to see him. Kairi does not trust him, however, as a few Nobodies appear. A portal of darkness opens behind her she rushes though in order to start her own journey to find her two friends because they were taking too long to come back home. She ends up in Twilight Town, where she becomes friends with Hayner, Pence and Olette, but Axel tracks her down and brings her back with him. At some point off screen, she and Pluto are taken from Axel by Saïx and locked away in The World That Never Was.
Naminé comes to her rescue before Sora can reach her, and the two of them run to try and escape. Saïx stops them, letting Kairi know that he would not simply allow her to walk out. A cloaked figure appears and the berserker Nobodies behind Saïx are defeated. He pins Saïx to the wall, who disappears into a portal that he opens up. Naminé lets Kairi know the cloaked figure is Riku, and she makes him wait before he can leave. Kairi lowers his hood, revealing that he looks like Ansem.
Kairi then finds Sora fighting some Heartless a few levels below and calls out to him. They then consume him, and she jumps to a ledge below in order to try and help him. She herself is attacked, but Riku destroys them and gives her a keyblade to fight with. Kairi takes it and begins to charge at the Heartless without hesitation while Riku fights at her side. Finally, she makes it down to Sora�s level and the three are reunited once more. Kairi runs and embraces him, and Riku tries to take the opportunity to leave, but Kairi calls out to him. Sora does not believe his ears, and it takes Kairi to make the three of them hold hands for him to realize it really is Riku standing in front of him.
Once Sora and Riku believe they have defeated Xemnas, Naminé opens a portal for everyone to escape and return home. The king, Donald and Goofy all leave, but Kairi stops to thank her. She and Roxas speak briefly before they both return to be a part Kairi and Sora again respectively. Kairi walks into the portal and turns to tell her two friends to hurry, but then the portal begins to close. She tries to get out before it does, but it is no use. Sora and Riku are once again left behind.
After they defeat Xemnas once and for all, they go through the Door to the Light once Kairi�s letter is read. Finally, after waiting for so long, Kairi sees both Sora and Riku fall from the sky into the ocean around Destiny Islands. She calls out to both of them, and they swim as fast as they can towards her. Kairi smiles and welcomes them home, happy for things to be back to the way they should be � with the three of them together.
