[edit] Personality
Jayne's a mercenary; he addresses most problems he encounters with strength and brute force. He is rather poorly-educated, and can act like an idiot at times; but he has a good dose of common sense, which has allowed him to live this long. He relies heavily on his instincts, which are pretty accurate, but can also be very superstitious. (He doesn't like weird shit; two things that scare him senseless are Reavers and River.) Morally ambiguous: he's a self-serving bastard who sends a good portion of his money home to Mommy; and often he shows guilt when doing something he knows is wrong (although that won't stop him). Pragmatic to a fault, perhaps.

[edit] History
Jayne never took a side in the war between the Alliance and the Independents. He seems to have lived his whole life as thug, working mostly as hired muscle. When Mal offered him a better deal on board Serenity, he shot without qualms his former partners; he's been working with Mal ever since, and he hasn't turned on him yet(despite being given the chance). He is, hilariously enough, a folk hero in the town of Canton on Higgins' Moon; after being part of a heist gone wrong, he dumped his partner and a shitload of cash out of his spacecraft in an attempt to escape. The townsfolk, viewing the money that fell on them as a gift and Jayne as a modern-day Robin Hood, erected a monument in his honor; even after Jayne returned and proved through his actions that he was no such thing, it is likely that they continued to worship the idea of him. Jayne distrusts River Tam and her brother Simon immensely, viewing them as an unnecessary danger to the safety of the ship and its crew. At one point tried to sell them out to the feds; needless to say he fails, and pisses a few people off in the process.
I'm picking him up after the movie ends, so he knows all about Miranda and the freaky stuff the Alliance pulled there. He'll also have seen River fight an entire armada or Reavers and come out with nothing but a tiny scratch on her forehead. This will, needless to say, put River high above Reavers on his list of things he does not want to mess with.
