Charles Chandler.
Private funeral services were held today, Monday, for Charles E. Chandler, 84, former councilman and mayor of Springfield who died May 4 at a local nursing home.
Mr. Chandler was born on October 18, 1877 in Delta, Iowa and had been a resident of this area since 1923. He was preceeded in death in 1959 by his wife, Stella Jane.
In February of 1936 Mr Chandler was appointed to the Springfield Council to serve the unexpired term of Phil Bartholomew who resigned. He was then elected mayor and served in that position from January of 1941 until December of 1944. He was also the former owner and managed the Delta Lumber in Springfield.
Surviving are two sons A. W. Chandler from Springfield and Morgan H. Chandler of Long Beach, Calif. three daughters, Mrs... Miller of Eugene, Mrs. Th...la DeFreece and Mrs. T Two Stickle, both of Her...., six grandchildren,... great-grand-children, several nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by two daughters Maxine Otterness in 1957 and Barbara Niece in 1961.
Private cremation followed the services which were in charge of Buell Chapel.
