Mobius (Celestial Architect Name: SG 90-210 km) is a planet just outside the Mid Rim that some consider to be similar to the tales of Earth. It is the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. It is supposedly the origin planet of the Chaos Emeralds, seven artifacts of enormous power. Although it does not appear quite as often as some other planets, it is still a key planet in the stories.

Geographic Features
Mobius was, by far, one of the most abundant worlds for life. Forests existed on the planet longer than most races have existed. Because of this, it is abundant in natural resources, as well as in life. This abundance of resources has caused an issue with the industrialization of the planet.
History
The Evolution of a Planet
According to myth, the planet of Mobius was formed by two god-like beings, Light Gaia and Dark Gaia. Dark Gaia obliterated the surface while Light Gaia recreated life on it. What is known scientifically, is that Mobius is one of the perfect worlds for life to develop. Its orbit, its axis of rotation, its single star and moon, and its abundance of resources led to a major development of carbon based life, and a high percentage of sentient creatures. Rumor has it this was accelerated by a long lost species of some sort during a war even forgotten by the ancient Celestial Architects, but these theories have been discounted by new evidence. An interesting fact is that humans evolved naturally from the planet, not coming from old Federation worlds as in other planets.
The first civilizations to arise on the planet was the Echidna, who seemed to base their society around seven central gems, the Chaos Emerald, which seemed to be influencing the ancient world of Mobius into strife. Echidna records state that their "Gods" sent down a Master Emerald, to control the powers of the Chaos Emeralds. Though their gods existance continues to be debated, the existence of the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emeralds is a solid fact of Mobian society.
In order to guard the Master Emerald, a being of the Chaos Emeralds was created, named Chaos. This being, born of the native Chao race, stood watch over it until a war with the Nocturnus Tribe in Echidna society caused the Echidnas to storm Chaos's alter for the chaos emeralds, killing many of his Chao brothers. In a fit of rage, Chaos absorbed the power of the Chaos Emeralds, nearly destroying the entire civilization. The Echidna's leader's daughter, Tikal, then used her powers to seal them both in the Master Emerald.
Evidence points to the alien Black Doom and this Black Arms forces appearing at points through the planets history, sometimes showing the black comet in several images. However, their impact on the course of Mobian history is unknown.
Eventually, the war with the Nocturnus escalated, and finally destroyed the Echidnas, who were already horribly weakened from Chaos's uprising. Very few remains continue to exist today, one of the only remains on an island that broke off from the mainland and floated up into the air. The Nocturnus, too, began to vanish, despite their semi-advanced technology. The Chaos Emeralds themselves disappeared to a southern island in one of the larger oceans. Through the scattered tribes of other creatures, cities began to arise, settlements were formed, and Mobian society began.
Industrialization and Civil War
Around 1200, many of the cities began to industrialize. With the abundance of natural resources, it was a simple matter of advancing their technology into an era of mass production and city-states.
However, when these cities began to intrude on the sentient creatures that lived in the natural environments of the planet, war broke out. The "Freedom Fighters" formed in order to fight against the intervention of their industrial brothers. A common misconception is that humans were on the side of the industries, when they were scattered on both sides.
It soon became clear to these industries and cities that the war to take these zones was costing more than the material benefit that could be obtained by industrializing these areas. These newly founded industrial areas also experienced guerrilla warfare against these factories, costing money and resources to defend and repair them. Knowing this, many of the city states agreed to set the world into "Zones," set areas where either cities could be constructed, or the environment would be left in a natural state.
Not all cities and Freedom Fighters agreed to this. While officially ending the "Civil War," battles between the two continue to this day.
The Technological Revolution
When the Galactic Federation discovered the planet in 1754, they found the planet had already obtained a limited amount of space travel (though no further than their immediate planets). Trade began, the Mobian resources traded for Federation technology. Space ships were created, and the Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.) was founded jointly by the Federation and Mobians in case of an invasion by another power.
However, many of the industrial Mobians were entranced by the Federation's robots. They began producing them, advancing on their models. Though it was never publicly stated, they began testing the ability to fuse flesh with machinery.
In the early 1920s, the first Space Colony was constructed, known as the ARK. Here, planetary research for the betterment of their planet was done. The research was overseen by GUN, and some of the planet's most brilliant minds were recruited. Most notable of these was Gerald Robotnik, who initially refused, but as soon as he found his granddaughter was terminally ill, he began his research on the station in the 1950's.
However, when the Black Arms comet passed by the planet, threatening it's existence, Gerald began preparing. He developed the Eclipse Cannon on the Ark, as well as Project Shadow, which was to make the ultimate life form. Several failed experiments were made, but finally the result, Shadow the Hedgehog, was put into its final stages. Lately, agents have been discovering hidden files of Project Shadow only Gerald and his closest colleagues knew about. Along with files on the failed "Ultimate Lifeforms," they used a newly discovered Gizoid model, an advanced ancient robot by the Nocturnus Clan, to test their experiments on it as part of Project Shadow. They submitted the design to GUN in order to stall their investigations of the projects aboard, but when Project Shadow was leaked, nothing could quell the government's fears.
GUN caught wind of the illegal and unauthorized experiments aboard the ARK. They settled on a dangerous gambit: GUN stormed the ARK, killing the researchers aboard, as well as Gerald, and shut down the ARK.
The Robotnik Revolution
In the 1980's, Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, grandson of Gerald, discovered research on robot/organism hybrids being done in the industrial zones. He formed his own industrial zones, raiding the zones set aside to the Freedom fighters in order to gain fresh creatures to use in his robots. He created quite a sizable army, before Sonic the Hedgehog, a hedgehog from South Island put a stop to his efforts.
Eggman attempted many times to take over Mobius by brute force, and to this day holds a sizable army. Eventually, he realized the key to taking the planet was in the Chaos Emeralds. He tricked the guardian of the Master Emerald, Knuckles the Echidna, into helping him, but even so Sonic foiled his plot.
After several other minor events involving the chaos emeralds, Eggman discovers the power locked inside the Master Emerald, and shatters it, releasing Chaos. The two eventually began gathering the emeralds, but when all seven were collected, Chaos betrayed Eggman, unleashing himself on Station Square. Chaos was defeated by Sonic and a small band of heroes, and his negative energy subsided.
Later, learned of and unleashed Project Shadow. GUN became involved, though Eggman ended destroying their island fortress, crippling their naval forces. after six emeralds were obtained, Eggman stormed the deactivated Space Colony ARK, activated the station's ARK's Eclipse Cannon, threatening the world with it. Meanwhile, he hunted for the seventh emerald, eventually finding it, but reactivating his grandfather's last gambit. The station began to plummet towards Mobius, and the Biolizard, a failed Ultimate Life form, attempted to stop them from canceling out the Chaos Emerald powering the station. In the end, Shadow and Sonic destroyed the Biolizard, and used the chaos emeralds to warp the station back into orbit.
Eggman survived the ordeal, but was usurped later by his robotic creation, Metal Sonic, who again used Eggman's fleets to take over Mobius. Four different teams foiled his attempts, even when he obtained all chaos emeralds and tried to destroy them. Metal Sonic was thought to be destroyed, but somehow came back later.
It was about this time that another force appeared on Mobius. Slike F. Elion began his hunt for the emeralds, using a force similar to that of Eggmans. However, with both GUN and Eggman weakened, Slike had no trouble storming several of the zones, and nearly obtaining all seven emeralds. However, Tabbir "Whirl" stormed the ship, rescuing a hostage named Evelyn and temporarily shutting down Slike's army.
About this time, Black Arms, and ancient evil that had visited the planet before, returned, thinking Shadow the Hedgehog would be their key to domination of Mobius. Through a process of shifting loyalties, Shadow eventually found his true purpose, betraying their leader, Black Doom, and defeating him. GUN was weakened by this conflict, causing major problems in the future.
Several other events occurred on Mobius involving the famed Sonic the Hedgehog and Doctor Eggman, specifically surrounding the Gizoid model given to GUN and the Nocturnus Clan. There were several other events involving an alternate dimension of Mobius, and a Nega-Eggman who attempted to dominate it. Eggman had managed the planet into chunks, but Sonic restored it once again using the Chaos Emeralds. Despite several major events on it's surface, at about this point, Mobius became a much bigger player on a universal scale.
The Modern Era
With the constant hunt for the chaos emeralds and the new development of warp travel, the seven emeralds began to travel beyond Mobius. While this lessened the conflict on the planet, it caused Mobius to become much more involved in universal conflicts.
First of these was Metal Sonic's return, where he assaulted Star World, attempting to dominate it. However, he was repelled by the Yoshi Bodyguards. This caused much controversy between the two planets, though the two then because much more involved with each other's issues.
Two major events occurred with a universal scramble for the Chaos Emerald. Eggman and Slike both mobilized their fleets in an attempt to get the seven emeralds, but were foiled when Sonic and his group warped them away. A second time, the X-Nauts attempted to get the emeralds in secret, but Eggman soon launched a counter offensive.
It was this time when the Metal Army invaded Mobius, attempting to both take a major resource node and make sure Whirl did not reveal the location of the emerald they had possessed. The Zinc Legion took a major portion of the southern hemisphere, forcing the Galactic Federation to get involved. In response, Eggman activated his AI Disruptor, disabling any Metal Army robot that got too close to his base while he was hunting for the emeralds. An X-Naut force stormed this, deactivated the Disruptor and found out that it was Whirl who knew the loctation the last emerald. They sabotaged their communications in an attempt to locate Whirl, unknowingly disabling their ability to prevent Metal Army nuclear missile strikes.
The Metal Army hit the Federation position with a nuke, and armed the rest of their missiles on Station Square. The X-Naut force disabled their anti-air, allowing GUN and the Federation remnants to hit their missiles before they could launch. The defenders swept over the scattered Zinc Legion, wiping them from the planet. Whirl was evacuated before the X-Nauts could get a hold of him.
Meanwhile, the hunt for the emeralds reached its climax, when Grodus used the six emeralds to try to beat off his enemies. It was not enough, and the X-Nauts were defeated. However, they did manage to get the last emerald from the Metal Army.
Soon after, the Dark Perforation attempted to steal the Master Emerald. To this, Team TOT, the SWDF, Whirl and Slike all stormed Metal Top's ship, but found it to be in the hands of a Secret Military Organization, not operating under any known nation. Slike attempted to steal it, but he was beaten, and Knuckles returned the Master Emerald to Angel Island.
Several months later, Slike tried again to take the Chaos Emeralds, this time succeeding. With the nations of the universe occupied with the Invasion of Mekkai, Slike was easily able to allude the intervention of any army. Using various versions of himself from other timelines, he obtained Whirl's emerald and the one held by the X-Nauts. However, he was defeated when the Doctor fixed the error in the timeline created by Slike.
There was another issue with Slike involving Blaze's alternate dimension, where the Sol Emeralds were being heisted. However, that soon ended when Whirl intervened.
The future of Mobius remains to be seen. Eggman has become quiet of late, while Slike continues to be a ever looming presence. The small civil war between the industries and Freedom Fighters still continues, somewhat heightened by the attacks by Eggman, Slike, and the Metal Army. Still, Mobius's defenders remain stalwart in Sonic, Whirl and GUN, and are willing to do whatever they can to overcome any obstacles in the future of their planet.
Culture
Mobius has always had a divided culture. There are these who wanted to keep the environment the way it always has been. These mostly stay in forested areas, though some can be found in all natural climates. These take as little from the environment as possible. However, they are largely fearful of technology, and Xenophobic of otherworldly powers.
The industrial centers are some of the most urban in the sector. Tightly packed, multi-tiered, and highly automated. These are the official "rulers" of the planet, as they control all trade and production. Life there is fast paced, and a constant movement of economic growth.
Some, however, have attempted to merge both sides of the culture. While Eggman and Slike, as well as many other villainous forces on Mobius, come from the industrial centers, such centers are not "evil." Efforts have been taken to minimize the impact of production on forest environments. However, not there still continues to be the problem of the mass resource drain these centers cause, forcing the conflict to continue after all of these years.

Trivia
- Mobius was the planet from the original Sonic games, though the idea was retconned when the Sonic Adventure series changed the planet to simply Earth (in Japan, however, Sonic had always lived on "Earth"). As the YB Timeline has had enough problem with the use of Earth, the authors decided to keep using Mobius.
