Westeros is a continent. Most of Westeros is today part of the Seven Kingdoms.
History
The children of the forest carved faces in the weirwood trees.
The First Men came to Westeros across the narrow sea.
Lann the Clever, a legendary trickster, lived during the Age of Heroes.
The Grey King ruled the Iron Islands. Legend says he also ruled the sea itself and taken a mermaid to wife.
Garth Greenhand was gardener king of the First Men. He wore a crown of vines and flowers and made the land bloom.
The ironmen plundered as far as the Port of Ibben and the Summer Isles. Each of the Iron Islands had its own "salt king" and "rock king". The High King of the Isles was chosen among them.
Brandon the Builder built Winterfell at an old godswood. The King in the North of House Stark ruled northern Westeros from there.
8000 years ago the Others disappeared.
Urron made the throne of the Iron Islands hereditary by murdering the other kings when they assembled for a choosing.
Andal adventurers carved out a mighty kingdom in the western hills and valleys of Westeros.
On the Iron Islands King Urron's line was extinguished when the Andals sweep over the islands.
C. 700 bAL The last weirwoods of southern Westeros are cut down.
Nymeria, warrior queen of the Rhoyne, landed in Dorne with ten thousand ships and married Mors Martell, Lord of Sunspear. With her help Mors vanquished his rivals to rule as Prince of Dorne.
The Iron Kings extended their rule far beyond the isles themselves, carving out kingdoms on the mainland. King Qhored could with some justice claim to rule "wherever men can smell salt water or hear the crash of waves". In later centuries Qhored's descendents lost the Arbor, Oldtown, Bear Island, and much of the western shore.
The last of the River Kings was slain by the Storm Kings who conquered all the way to the Neck.
Harwyn Hardhand, King of the Isles, took the Trident from Arrec the Storm King.
The Targaryens escaped the Doom of Valyria and settled on Dragonstone. From Dragonstone Aegon I Targaryen, known as the Dragon, with his sisters Visenya and Rhaneys, set sail to conquer and become the first king of the Seven Kingdoms, after he had unified them during the Wars of Conquest.
Orys Baratheon, rumored to be Aegon's bastard brother, defeated and killed Argilac the Arrogant, tbe last Storm King. As reward Aegon granted him Argilac's castle, lands and daughter.
The last King in the North, Torrhen Stark, the King Who Knelt, choose to swear fealty to Aegon the Dragon rather than do battle. He therefore keept his land and continued to rule as Lord of Winterfell.
Edmyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun and many other river lords deserted Harren the Black, King of the Isles, and joined Aegon.
Harren and his line perished in the burning of Harrenhal. Aegon rewarded Edmyn Tully with the dominion of the riverlands. He allowed the surviving iron lords to chose who should have the primacy among them. They chose Vickon Greyjoy, Lord of Pyke.
Mern, last King of the Reach, perished at the Field of Fire. His steward, Harlen Tyrell, surrendered Highgarden to Aegon. Aegon granted Harlen Highgarden and dominion of the Reach.
