Gared
From Asoiaf
Gared became a Sworn Brother of the Night's Watch when he was about ten. He spent forty years in the Watch where he saw two winters and watched men freeze to death. He lost two ears, three tows and a little finger to the cold himself.
Gared went out on a ranging with Ser Waymar Royce and Will, riding north from the Wall for nine days on the track of a band of wildling raiders. Will scouted ahead and found their camp with all the wildlings apparently dead. Gared and Ser Waymar quarreled about what to do next, Gared wanting to return and Waymar wanting check out the wildlings more closely. Gared claimed the wildlings froze to death, but since the Wall had been weeping lately Waymar claimed this was not possible. Waymar ordered Will to show them the camp. Waymar and Will left Gared to guard the horses to walk the last stretch on foot.
Gared fled south in fear and was captured outside a small holdfast near Winterfell. Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell rode out with Robb Stark, Brandon Stark, Jon Snow, Theon Greyjoy, Jory Cassel, Hullen and Harwin and 12 to see justice done. Eddard condemned Gared to death and beheaded him with Ice.
