History

The Grey King ruled the Iron Islands during the Age of Heroes. Legend says he also ruled the sea itself and took a mermaid to wife.

The ironmen were the terrors of the sea, sailing as far as the Port of Ibben and the Summer Isles. They prided themselves on their fierceness in battle and their sacred freedoms. Each islands had its own "salt king" and "rock king". The High King of the Isles was chosen among them.

Urron made the throne hereditary by murdering the other kings when they assembled for a choosing.

Urron's line was extinguished a thousand years later when the Andals swept over the islands. Many island lords intermarries with the conquerers.

After Harren the Black, last King of the Isles, and his sons perished at Harrenhal Aegon the Conquerer allowed the surviving iron lords to chose who should have the primacy among them. They chose Vickon Greyjoy, Lord of Pyke as Lord of the Iron Islands.

Balon Greyjoy, Lord of the Iron Islands proclaimed himself King of the Isles, starting Greyjoy's Rebellion. Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms and Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell joined forces to defeat him.

During Greyjoy's Rebellion Rodrik Greyjoy was slain at Seagard and Maron Greyjoy was slain on the walls of Pyke.

289 AL At night in the castle of Pyke Balon Greyjoy, King of the Iron Islands surrendered to Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms. Balon's son Theon Greyjoy became the hostage and ward of Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell.
