House Tully
From Asoiaf
House Tully has held the castle of Riverrun for a thousand years. Hoster Tully is the current Lord of Riverrun.
The Tullys were never kings. They were first subjects of the River Kings who ruled the land around the Trident. The last River King was slain by the Storm Kings who conquered all the way to the Neck. Three hundred years later Harwyn Hardhand, King of the Isles, took the Trident from King Arrec. Harwyn's grandson, Harren the Black was little loved. During the Wars of Conquest Edmyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun was the first of many river lords to desert and join Aegon the Conquerer. After Harren's death at Harrenhal Aegon rewarded Lord Edmyn with the dominion over the lands of the Trident.
Lord Hoster's wife, Lady Minisa, died in childbed.
Hoster Tully promised his twelve year old daughter Catelyn to Brandon Stark
Catelyn Tully was to wed Brandon Stark, but he was strangeled a few days before on the orders of Aerys II Targaryen, King of the Seven Kingdoms.
282 AL Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, in his brother Brandon's stead, and Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie married Catelyn and Lysa daughters of Lord Hoster Tully at Riverrun.
283 AL Catelyn's first son Robb Stark was born.
Eddard and Catelyn spent the first year of their marriage apart with Eddard off at war in the south while Catelyn remained in Riverrun with their infant son Robb. During that year Eddard fathered a bastard son, Jon Snow. When Catelyn rode to Winterfell, Eddard's bastard son Jon and his wet nurse had already taken up residence. Eddard would not speak about the mother. Rumours in the castle said she was Lady Ashara Dayne. When Catelyn confronted Eddard about these rumours he told her never to ask about Jon again and put an end to the whispers about Ashara Dayne. Nothing Catelyn said could persuade Eddard to send Jon Snow away.
Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell built a sept for Catelyn at Winterfell.
290 AL Catelyn's second son Brandon Stark was born.
294 AL Catelyn's third son Rickon was born.
The Hand of the King, Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie, fell ill and died after a short while. Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock accepted to take Robert Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie as his ward, but was refused by Lady Lysa. She and Robert then left King's Landing in the middle of the night without a word. Cersei was furious.
Lysa travelled home to the Eyrie with her son Robert.
Eddard Stark executed Gared, a deserter from the Night's Watch. Afterwards Robb and Jon Snow found a litter of six direwolf pups. The siblings got a pup each.
Returning home Eddard went to the godswood to cleanse himself and his sword. The children gathered in the kitchen to argue about names for the pups. Catelyn received news of the death of Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie and and that King Robert Baratheon was traveling to Winterfell with the royal family. She went to see Eddard in the godswood and told him the news.
Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms arrived at Winterfell. Among the three hundred travelling with him were Queen Cersei, Prince Joffrey Baratheon, Princess Myrcella Baratheon, Prince Tommen Baratheon, Ser Jaime Lannister, two other knights of the Kingsguard, Tyrion Lannister and Sandor Clegane. They were met at the gates by Lord Eddard, Lady Catelyn and the children. On Robert's request he and Eddard left the others and went down to the crypt. Robert offered Eddard the office of Hand of the King and to betroth Sansa to Joffrey. Eddard asked for time to consider.
A feast was held in the Great Hall of Winterfell. Jon Snow was seated among the younger squires, Lady Stark thinking it would insult the royal family to seat a bastard among them. The royal family entered the hall in procession, Lord Stark first escorting the queen followed by King Robert and Lady Stark. Then came the children, Rickon, Robb and Myrcella, Arya and Tommen and Sansa and Joffrey. After them came Ser Jaime and Tyrion Lannister. Last came Benjen Stark and Theon Greyjoy. Lord and Lady Stark hosted the king and queen on a raised platform beneath which sat the Stark and royal children. The children had not been allowed to bring the dire wolves. During the feast Lord Stark was in a tense mood while King Robert drank all night.
Lysa Arryn sent a message to her sister Catelyn written in a secret language they had made when they were little. In the message she says that Jon Arryn was murdered by the queen and the Lannisters. The message was delivered to Winterfell beneath a false bottom in a box containing a lens of Myr.
After they have had sex in Catelyn's bedchambers, Eddard told her he had decided to refuse King Robert's offer to become the King's Hand. Catelyn disagreed and argueed Eddard had to accept. Someone left the box from Lysa Arryn in Maester Luwin's observatory. Desmond escorted Maester Luwin to see Lord and Lady Stark. Maester Luwin was allowed to enter Catelyn's bedchamber and handed Lysa's message to her. Having read and burning the letter, Catelyn told Eddard that he now must become King Robert's Hand. Maester Luwin agreed. Eddard reluctantly accepted. He decided that Catelyn would have to stay in Winterfell to help Robb rule. Rickon will also stay, buth the other children he will bring south. Catelyn refused to let Jon Snow stay at Winterfell. Maester Luwin told them that Jon aspired to join the Night's Watch. They agree this was the best solution. Eddard would speak to his brother Benjen and later Jon.
