The Galactic Federation
From Yb Timeline
"Serve the Federation, serve the universe!"
-Galactic Federation Creed, Rebel Yell Prologue: The Rettilite Sector
The Galactic Federation is a transgalactic nation, and the largest unified body of power in the known universe. They span across four galaxies, and hold a sway over most human worlds, as well as a large portion of other major species. The Federation has been responsible to bringing many civilizations into an era of space flight, and are the founding member of the Alliance of Worlds. They are constantly bombarded from the outside by nations such as the Kriken Empire, and from within by revolts and Space Pirate raids.

Forming a Federation
The Federation was formed from the Galactic Order of Diaban, a mostly human empire that spread across three galaxies, branching out from the Sapia and into the Helios and Cremia Galaxies. The increasing inability for the empire to manage itself from the seat of Diaban prompted the need for major reforms in the government. The former empires of the outer galaxies demanded representation among the Galactic Order in order to put the needs of their territories over the needs of Diaban.
This began to go on for several decades until major portions threatened to revolt against the Order. Now spread too thin, the Galactic Order underwent a major change in the Diabanian Reformation, in which all major nations came together to create a parliamentary representative democracy with self governing states for each sector of the Order. The entire government was renamed as well, and in 0 BZ the Galactic Federation was founded.
The seat of power was determined to be set on Diaban, with a prime minister leading the Federation elected by the senate. For the next hundred years the Federation focused on defense and expansion, creating fleets to ward off the Kriken Empire.
Expansion and Discovery
With the invention of the Slipspace drive, the Federation began to move out into other galaxies. They pushed a scouting force into the Salnos Galaxy. Many of the inhabitants joined willingly, but many civilizations resisted the larger empire's influence and fought back. In response, the Federation sent a fleet to pacify the rebelling civilizations, assimilating most of the galaxy. One of the displaced populations came to be known as the Space Pirates, who would play a role later in history.
The conquest of Salnos ended when a large negative response from the population of the Federation began to arise. As such, forces were taken out of the galaxy, and the foreign policy of the Galactic Federation was changed to focus more on the trade and study of other civilizations. Through these methods the Federation made contact with civilizations like the Chozo, who aided much in their technological advancement. A large portion of the galaxy was left untouched by the Federation, despite them being the supposed owners of the galaxy to this day.
In the 1800s scouting probes made contact with the Starlight Galaxy, which was found to be teeming with life. The Federation sent a diplomatic team, and many of the human based planets willingly gave themselves to Federation control. Several previously unpopulated worlds were also populated by the Federation, one of the most prominent being New Terra. In 1857 the Galactic Federation made contact with a fledgling Star World. The planet accepted much of their space travel technology, and in exchange many of their traditions and magical arts were passed onto the Federation.
At its peak, the Federation were the dominant force in five galaxies, and remained the most powerful force in the known universe, having crushed all Kriken advancements on their territory.
20th Century and Internal Conflict
In the 20th Century, the Federation halted its expansion in order to foster the development of its own territory. It had a stream of trade with other uncontrolled protectorates, as well as the largest standing military force. As such, reforms caused a large scale back of oversight among its outer colonies. This would quickly allow for two major events in 1921, the return of the Space Pirates as a large raiding force the rebellion of seven sectors in the Cyclosis Rebellion.
The Space Pirates fought a galactic shadow war against the Federation, hitting supply lines and causing trillions of credits in damage every month. They focused down Federation weapons labs and stole much of their prototype research, allowing them to not only become a powerful force that could contest with Federations forces, but giving them the ability to sell their findings to criminal syndicates in the Federation, both giving the Space Pirates an economic boon and causing a rise in the power of crimelords. In response, the Galactic Federation Police Force was formed in 1934, with the sole purpose of hunting down and destroying Space Pirate operations.
On Cyclosis, there was a long standing abuse of authority among the Federation leaders. Protests among the galactic district were widespread, and met with harsh police action. When one protest was met with hostile force and the death of several thousand, the seven systems erupted into rebellion against the Federation. From 1943 on, the Federation would attempt to quell the rebels by force, sending in their fleets to attempt to force the rebels to surrender. This tactic was inefficient, and a campaign of guerilla warfare spilled far beyond the rebelling sectors, becoming a campaign of terror across the entire Federation.
These two conflicts ran costs high for the Federation. As such, they were forced to give amnesty to several outer colonies, especially in the Starlight Galaxy, in order to allow for a more focused defense. As such, the Federation presence in the Starlight Galaxy was diminished to a few minor border worlds.
In 1965, a wing of the Federation Fleet, under Holar Horus, turned against the Federation in what was known as the Horus Rebellion. Horus took control of several ships containing nuclear warheads, and seized control of the planet of Valkyrie III. The 4th Fleet, under Admiral Dane, ordered the surrender of Horus's fleet, but was fired upon. In the span of three weeks, the entire planet was leveled and every ship held by the rebels destroyed. The Horus Rebellion was a costly shock to the Federation, and caused a substantial increase in funding to the military aspects of the Federation.
In 1969, the Galactic Federation called it allies together to form a offical alliance, that would stretch through most of the known universe. This primarily included Galactic Federation space, but stretched to the unclaimed regions of the Salinos Galaxy and most of the Starlight Galaxy. This alliance, headed by the Federation, became known as the Alliance of Worlds, which served both as a defense pact and a stage for intergalactic trade. The Chozo abstaned from this alliance.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Space Pirate attacks increased. Now they were a force able to go toe-to-toe with the Galactic Federation in terms of technology. They had obtained a sentient Chozo artificial intelligence, who had rebelled against its creators and willingly joined the Space Pirates. This organic AI, known as Mother Brain, became the tactical brain of their forces and coordinated some of the more brutal raids against the Federation. In 1993, the Federation caught wind of the Space Pirates using a Chozo bioweapon known as the Metroid and weaponizing it to their own ends on the planet of Zebes. To this extent, the Galactic Federation Police Force sent Samus Aran, a bounty hunter, to destroy the creatures and their Aurora Unit. This raid was successful, and the planet Zebes was destroyed as well as most of the Space Pirate leadership.
In this time, the Cyclosis rebellion continued to escalate. Terrorist bombings began to hit Diaban itself, causing a panic among the Federation. Attempts were made to destroy some of the more fortified worlds of the rebelling sector, but this was met with public outcry and distain, as well as threats of further rebellions. Meanwhile, continued attacks by the Space Pirates, internal struggle, and some unknown plague began to sweep through the Federation’s Chozo allies, slowly killing them off.
In the aftermath of the Zebes raid, the Federation uncovered research instillations revealing a new mutagen they had discovered. Samus Aran was sent again to raid the planet of Talon IV, discovering the source known as Phazon. After destroying the Space Pirates one the planet, Samus destroyed the Leviathan Seed as well as the Prime creature that controlled the growth of Phazon, but in an attempt to survive the creature absorbed some of her genetic code, creating a being known as Dark Samus.
Decade of War
At the turn of the 21th Century, Phazon became the largest issue for the Federation. The properties of the substance were unknown, and it seemed to be spreading through the Salanos Galaxy at a rapid rate. When Federation Marine squadron was lost on the planet of Aether, Samus was sent to investigate only to discover that Phazon had inhabited the planet for hundreds of years and had caused a dimensional instability in the planet, as well as created a race known as the Ing. After a long fought campaign, Samus destroyed the Ing and the Dark World of the planet, facing Dark Samus again and defeating the creature. However, Phazon's spread seemed to increase, going as far as the Starlight Galaxy and to the planet of Star World.
What followed was a four year period of conflict. The Space Pirates continued to mass as a threat, the Cyclosis Rebellion continued, Phazon threatened to consume a galaxy, and a Kriken Surge of 1991 continued to harass the Cermia Galaxy. A period of military recruitment and technological advancement followed, taking technologies from the newly arrived Mexous Sniffin, the dying Chozo, and the other cultures of the universe in order to keep the Federation stable. The Cyclosis Rebels would begin to fall shortly after, with six of the seven sectors that rebelled being brought back into the Federation.
In 2005 there was an attempted invasion of Federation space by the COUE in the Huddukel Sector. This invasion was intercepted by Admiral Salo, who engaged the fleet as it came out of hyperspace and destroyed them. This culminated in the loss of over half of the COUE's entire standing fleet. Remnants scattered through the sector, but were cut off from their command.
In 2006, a mysterious transmission from the mostly unexplored Tetra Galaxy called for all civilizations to uncover an "ultimate power." The major powers of the universe sent their greatest warriors in order to claim this power, with the Federation sending Samus Aran to uncover it. She was aided by a cadre of Yoshi Bodyguards, who helped uncover the trap set by the mysterious being known as Gorea. It was soon defeated, and the threat nullified.
Soon after, the Cyclosis Rebels began to lose their footing, the last rebelling system falling to the Federation after a failed attempt to transplant themselves to the Starlight Galaxy. They continued as a threat to the Federation, but their forces were scattered and disorganized.
In late 2006, the threat of Phazon became too great to ignore any further. Leviathan Seeds landed on several key worlds and began to corrupt them at a fast rate. The Galactic Federation Police Force, as well as the Marine Corps and the Navy, sent a large portion of their fleet to destroy these seeds. What followed was the largest deployment of troops since the Horus Rebellion, where Samus Aran and the Federation would destroy three Leviathan Seeds hitting a key Federation outpost. In the process, it was discovered that the Space Pirates held key research on Phazon and its effects, even going so far as to corrupt their own homeworld with the substance. Fleet Admiral Dane ordered an invasion of their homeworld, destroying the unified Space Pirate presence and uncovering the Phazon core world of Phaaze. Samus Aran was sent to destroy the planet, when she came across the Prime creature once again. This time, she destroyed both it and the Aurora Unit it had corrupted, which caused a chain reaction that destroyed the planet. Without its Prime unit, Phazon ceased to be a threat to the Federation.
Later in the following year, the Federation sent a task force under General Daliear to the planet of Ryshi in an attempt to end the genocide of its people at the hands of the COUE. This amounted to a long series of desert raids against the COUE bases, and finally an all out siege of the Porthex capitol. In the end, their commander General Mysterio attempted to retreat, but was slain. The COUE fleets were scattered and the organization disbanded.
Though the threat of Phazon was gone, in 2007 the Metal Army struck in the Starlight Galaxy. This conflict soon bled over into the Cremia, Salnos, and Sapia Galaxies, striking the Mid-Rim of the Cremia the hardest. The Federation rallied to the defense of their worlds, being pushed back at the battles of Necroplis and Hegate VII. With the help of SWDF and Yoshi Bodyguard Clone Army forces, they were able to stop the advancement of the Mid-Rim by planting superweapon grade EMPs on several command ships.
Meanwhile, the Chozo had become all but extinct and the Space Pirates scattered, but the threat of the Metroid bioweapon was still prevalent. As such, the Federation tasked Samus to wipe them out on their home planet of SR388. This task was accomplished, and one last infant Metroid was sent into Federation care.
In early 2008, however, the Space Pirates reformed on the shattered crust of Zebes for another stand against the Federation. Their leader Ridley raided the research station containing the infant Metroid and reconstructed the Mother Brain unit as well as the creature known as Kraid. Samus once again raided Zebes, destroying the Space Pirates command structure and finally destroying Ridley and Mother Brain forever. In the final battle, the last infant Metroid was destroyed.
Later in the year the Federation began to take a more active role in the Metal Wars. They began to push into the Starlight Galaxy and reinforce their allies in the Alliance of Worlds, namely pushing back the Metal Army from the Lylat System. They mounted a heavy defense against the Zinc Legion on Mobius, but X-Naut saboteurs destroyed their communications network and shut their missile defense systems offline. The Metal Army hit the Federation frontlines with nuclear weapons, forcing them to fall back and regroup for a final push. Thankfully the same X-Nauts hit the Metal Army lines and disabled their sonic cannon anti-aircraft weapons, allowing the Federation to crush the Metal forces with ease.
In 2009, Star World was invaded by the Metal Army. The Federation retaliated and helped rout the fleet as it was pushed back by the defenders of the world. Seeing their opening, the Galactic Federation brought the Alliance of Worlds together for a full attack on Mekkai. They broke through the planet's defenses and crushed the last of the Metal Army's forces. In the aftermath, the Federation helped occupy the planet and ensure the last Metal Army forces were destroyed.
Immediately after the invasion however, a unknown extragalactic army forced its way through the fringes of the Salinos and Helios Galaxies. This force was known as The Dark Perforation, and began to destroy the worlds on the fringe of Federation space. Still weakened from the Metal Wars, the Federation's response was to attempt to hold out against the Dark Perforation in their own worlds, allowing their forces to move into the Starlight Galaxy unimpeded.
Later in March the Metal Army again pushed from the Tetra Galaxy with a cadre of X-Nauts, this time commanded by a powerful AI, hitting both the Dark Perforation and Federation lines. The Federation attempted to mount a defense, but were beaten back at Mintop and forced to defend. The Federation aided the SWDF in rallying the occupation forces to hit the planet that the assault was mounted from, Alinos. However, Omega had already taken control of the planet and it’s AI, and they were also met with Conrad the Conqueror's fleet as well as the remaining X-Nauts. In the ensuing four way battle the Federation forces were beaten back with the rest of the Alliance of Worlds. The battle with the Dark Perforation finally culminated in an invasion of Star World, which the Federation attempted to assist in the defense of. However, a planetary shield blocked General Daliear's defense. When the SWDF forces broke the shield, they discovered a way to attack the Dark Perforation's main castle. The Alliance of Worlds rallied behind this assault, and gave command of the operation to General Cyrus Vance. The Federation forces provided a distraction as they made a large push against the Dark Perforation's main offensive line, while the rest of the Alliance of Worlds used the Black Hole Cannon to move their fleets in position to besiege their main castle. The operation was a success, and after the death of the core creature all Dark Perforation forces began to die off.
Later in the year there was a large energy surge on the planet of New Euphrates, which prompted the Federation to send a response force along with the rest of the Alliance of Worlds. They discovered that the planet had been destroyed by the Scry'Aldor, and upon investigating the last remaining ruins on the planet were ambushed by the alien Galdenthane and forced to retreat. The planet was bombarded again by the Scry'Aldor upon their leaving, this time blasting the planet apart.
The Federation began a program to study the Galdenthane creature for use as a bioweapon, as well as engaging in several other projects involving the use of biological weapons. The Galdenthane projects were centered in the Rettilite Sector, while several Biologic Space Laboratories were set up across Federation space with the hope of cloning the Metroid organism from the last remaining cells. Galdenthane research began to show some promise, as a link was discovered between the psychic emanations of Newtypes and the hive mind of the Galdenthane. A weapon was developed that could lure the Galdenthane to a target location, known as the psychic emitter.
However, when the Galdenthane broke out of their research plants on the planet of Faitios Taua, the Scry'Aldor appeared and liquefied the planet's surface. This caused a large amount of panic through the entire Rettilite Sector, which had long since been known for anti-Federation sentiment. In order to test the limits of the Galdenthane and paint the Federation in a better light, psychic emitters were placed on the planet of Notic Taua. The local militia was overrun, but several refugees were evacuated by the rebel faction of the sector known as the Sons of Koperil. In their escape, they stole the research for the psychic emitter and began to reconstruct their own.
This escalated into a three way war between the Sons of Koperil, the Galactic Federation and the Galdenthane. The Sons of Koperil took the planet of Jericho and began a series of open revolts, even capturing and impressing the Federation 33rd Marine Corps's and their leader General Warwick. The Federation sent a full invasion fleet to stop the Sons of Koperil, but their leader, Inaran Rohal discovered the potential of the psychic emitter and used it to lure the Galdenthane to the Federation position. The fleet was destroyed and the Sons of Koperil made their escape.
Later, the Sons of Koperil launched an invasion of the capitol world of Terranuva, breaking through the invasionary fleet and the city-world's defenders. Inaran set psychic emitters across the planet, luring trillions of Galdenthane to the planet's surface and wiping out the planet's population, escaping before his forces could be caught. The Scry'Aldor attempted to purify the planet, but were engaged by the Sons of Koperil and forced to fall back. With their base of operations in the sector destroyed, the remaining Federation forces either retreated or surrendered, leaving Inaran Rohal in command of the sector as Emperor of the new Rettilite Empire.
In response to this, Federation High Command sent General Daliear and the 4th Fleet to reclaim the sector and destroy the Galdenthane, Rettilite Empire, and Scry'Aldor. On the way, his forces received a distress signal from the planet of Aurora, which was being attacked by the Neo-COUE fleet. A battle ensued, which was at first a dominating victory for the Federation. However, a Galdenthane Flesh Changer, under the guise of General Mysterio, tricked some of the loyalist COUE forces to rebel against their leaders and set off several missiles filled with Galdenthane spores. The planet was wiped out and both fleets were virtually destroyed. The remaining fleet was forced to destroy the core of the planet and retreat.
In 2010, the research on Metroid creatures began to gain some leeway, as Metroids were now being successfully cloned on their SR388 Biologic Space Laboratory. Samus Aran was sent on a research mission to the surface of the planet, which she was attacked by an X Parasite. She was taken back to their ship, and had to be surgically implanted with Metroid DNA to destroy the infection, as it was discovered the Metroids were engineered to kill the X. However, infected parts of her suit that were removed soon replicated new parasites which infected the other sections of the research station. The Federation used this opportunity to see the X Parasites in action and assess their use as a bioweapon, having Samus engage them and attempt to destroy them as well as protect the Metroid clones on the station. When it was revealed what the Federation's intentions were, Samus set the space station to self-destruct in SR388's atmosphere, destroying both it and the space station and killing off the X Parasite forever and halting the Metroid cloning project.
In 2011, the Federation experienced the outbreak of a psychic storm in the Hidukkel Sector, long considered to be a lawless sector with limited Federation control, though it housed the Newtype program known as the Astral Eyes. Admiral Salo sent the 2nd Fleet to pacify the various factions that had gained power in the sector.
Later in the year, the Star World Civil War occurred, ending with the remaining Council of Star World turning over control of the planet temporarily to the Federation. They kept a small defensive force there with the purpose of keeping order on the devastated planet.
Culture
The Federation is a diverse and wide spreading conglomerate of planets. Primarily, the Federation's culture is rooted in the ideas of humanity, who hold approximately 60% of the population. There are notable differences among the various sectors and galaxies, many taking on the traditions and customs of their past before the Federation.
The Federation holds the strong ideal of bettering the Federation as a whole while maintaining the strength of the individual. The influence of this nationalism varies depending on the world, many of the more fringe worlds holding less of an emphasis on the betterment of the Federation. Many criticize this focus on being far too human-centric, as historically the Prime Minister of the Federation has been human. However, the Diabian Senate, which holds the most of the decision-making power of the Federation, has always been very multi-racial.
In the past, the Federation has opted for a more peaceful approach to galactic affairs, making peace with the Starlight Galaxy and establishing the Alliance of Worlds. However, in recent years they have been forced into a militaristic approach against the various threats that have arisen both within their borders and from without. Emphasis has been placed on military power and recruitment, which has lead to various ethical conflicts involving their use of their Newtype program and the use of bioweapons against their enemies.
The Federation language was first known as Diabianian, but was soon changed to the name Common. This has historically been the language adopted since the pre-Galactic Order era, and is considered by many to be one of the simplest and most malleable languages known. As such it has been adopted through most of the galactic cluster, even becoming the primary language of most of the Starlight Galaxy.
Federation religion varies between the different sectors, though the two strongest religions have been the Church of the Light, which is the historic successor to the Mage Guilds of the Galactic Order and a movement known as Jesusism, based on the old Earth mythos of the Federation. Earth mythos has been a strong force among the Federation, and forms the basis of many terms among their language and throughout the entire universe. Many among the Federation are convinced Earth is an actual place, and expeditions have been sent to discover this strange world.

Military
The Federation military is divided into three separate branches, the Galactic Federation Marine Corps, the Galactic Federation Naval Forces, and the Galactic Federation Police Forces. Each has separate command structures, but answer to the Diabianian Senate and the Prime Minister's office. Despite the differing command structures, no conflicts between the different branches have occurred in the long years that this structure has existed.
The Marine Corps handle planetary assaults, and don the traditional Federation Marine Powered Armor, a staple since the groups founding. These handle planetary and boarding deployments, as well as heavy armor in terrestrial warfare. They hold a small fleet on their own, but rely on the Naval Forces for mass transport. The Federation Marine Corps also doubles as a sort of diplomatic and reconnaissance group, as they are the first to be sent to an undiscovered planet that may possibly hold sentient life or resources that could be used for the Federation. As such they can be found leased to private scientific ventures or exploration operations.
The Federation Naval Forces handle the massive Federation Fleet, and are divided into different numbered fleets, 1st through 10th. Each fleet as an Admiral who commands the hundreds of thousands, some fleets the millions, of ships on their various deployments through the universe. Unlike the Marines, the Navy is put under tighter Senatorial supervision, as the fleets are costly to both replace and maintain.
Finally, the Federation Police Forces are assigned the duty of dealing with specific threats from within the Federation, such as criminal syndicates or pirate organizations. With the rise of the Space Pirates, they have become more and more of an actual armed force, and have maintained their own large armories across various worlds. One of their notable duties has been the contracting of bounty hunters for special operations missions both within and without the Federation, a duty they have held for hundreds of years. As such, they have been seen as a sort of special forces division, as many of the bounty hunters are far more versatile and outfitted much better than standard Federation commandos.
Another branch of the Federation is the Newtype Program, a program which has been kept under wraps for many years. It uses genetic enhancements that can be implemented in a various number of species to create a force of psychic operatives, which are used in cases of demonic outbreaks or mana disruption events. The Newtype program is thought to be the successor to the disbanded Mages Guilds of the Order, as the official stance of the Federation is that old magic is misunderstood psychic ability. It is unknown how many branches the Federation has, but each has their own Director who oversees their own branch of the Program. The most well known, and the only declassified branch, is known as the Astral Eyes in the Rettilite Sector, who take a pseudo-religious approach to their powers and see themselves as bringers of justice.
Technology
The Federation is considered one of the most prominent technological hotbeds in the galaxy, and has been responsible for many of the advancements of the past three hundred years. Since then they have adapted to the advancements of their neighbors, assimilating technology from Star World and the Chozo.
The Federation favors practicality when designing their technologies. Their hostile environment suits and weapons are designed to be produced on a grand scale and are designed to be easy to use and maintain. Because of the scale of the Federation, they are able to tap into a vast number of resources for the production of new technologies.
For weapons, the Federation is known for their use of plasma-based technology. These weapons fire a globe of superheated gases that are turned into an energized plasma state. This bolt is encased in a small magnetic field that is dispersed upon impact, which prevents the plasma from dissipating before reaching the target. Upon impact, the plasma will usually vaporize an area of impact around the target. This weapon is especially good at destroying armor, and can overcharge most basic shields. These weapons come in various forms, ranging from pistol to starship battery. The plasma rifle is the standard weapon for the Federation infantry. However, a major problem is that if plasma based weapons are not properly maintained, they can backfire. This is usually fatal to the wielder of the weapon. As such, Federation marines are drilled intensely on proper maintenance of plasma weapons.
Another major advancement is the Faster-Than-Light Drives the Federation have created. The first drive, the Dominik-Franko Faster-Than-Light System, used a kinetic barrier to propel an object faster than light, though it was unreliable in its first stages. Next to come would be the Reality Rift FTL Drive, which propelled the target through a series of manufactured pocket dimensions before they reached the target. This allowed systems and galaxies that would previously take millions of years to be reached in a matter of months. The final iteration was the Slipspace Drive, which used the "dark space" between dimensions to launch a ship through space and time. This is the model still used today.
Federation standard transportation is done via gravity bubbles, which allow vehicles to operate outside of a planet's gravity field. This technology has been streamlined to the point where it has become a standard for all mass produced automobiles, and has allowed for the artificial gravity used in most space platforms.
For their military, the Federation uses a variety of different ship types and weapons. They were the first to create the railgun, a magnetically propelled rod that took a great amount of force to stop. In addition, the Federation uses many heavy tanks and bipedal war mechs in combat. Nuclear arms are also commonly used by the Federation.
Trivia
- The Galactic Federation's core world was alluded to being Earth in the Metroid games. However, their capitol in the Metroid Manga is referred to as Diaban, which is considered canon in regards to the YB Timeline.
