KBOP-CA is a low-power Class A television station in San Diego, California, broadcasting locally in analog on UHF channel 43, as well as being carried on digital cable on Cox Digital Cable channel 143 and Time Warner Digital Cable channel 343. Founded December 5, 1990, the station is owned by Taylor Media Stations Group. KBOP currently broadcasts Daystar, ShopNBC, and the Worship Network, 7 days a week.
History
KBOP-CA was a Spanish language station known as Mi San Diego TV, programmed by KNSD, an NBC affiliate co-owned by NBC Universal and LIN Television. Much of the programming for KBOP-CA originated from Los Angeles Spanish independent station KWHY-TV, including its newscasts, Noticias 22, weekdays at 5 PM and weekends at 7 PM and 10 PM. However, KBOP-CA aired its own newscasts, Noticias Mi San Diego TV 43, weekdays at 7 PM and 10 PM. The station also provided Spanish-language broadcasts of San Diego Padres baseball games during the season and San Diego Chargers pre-season football games. In overnight hours (approximatedly 12:30 AM to 6:30 AM), KBOP-CA carried the Shop At Home shopping channel feed.
In July 2007, it was announced that KNSD would sell its station to Taylor Media Stations Group, including the switch to religious programming on KBOP, effective September 1, 2007. Its news programs, Noticias Mi San Diego and Otro Vistazo, have moved to KNSD -- the former is now seen weekdays at 4AM on KNSD; the latter on Sundays at 5AM on KNSD. KNSD is still continuing to maintain the Mi San Diego TV branded web site, but without the channel 43 designation, at http://www.misdtv.com/ for use with the limited number of Spanish-language programming (the two news shows) that have moved to the early morning hours on KNSD. ([1]),
The reason for this discontinuation of KNSD's management of KBOP and therefore the end of KBOP's Spanish-language programming is due to KBOP's limited availability -- on one low-power station and on digital cable, while the other stations have analog cable coverage, a full-powered signal, and/or several low-powered transmitters.
After Taylor Media's buyout of Mi San Diego TV on September 1, 2007, KBOP replaced its programming with Daystar, ShopNBC, and Worship Network.
In a conference by Josh Taylor, CEO of Taylor Media, it was revealed that its sister station KUSI would be affiliating with The CW. [2] The change will happen in August 2008, assuming the affiliation from KSWB. It is possible that upon taking over the Fox affiliation, KSWB will file an FCC application for a digital companion channel.
