Toa are the second stage in the life cycle of Matoran, regarded as heroes and protectors of the Matoran.

Physiology and Powers

Toa are formed when Matoran are exposed to a form of energy known tentatively as "Toa energy". This energy, which comes from other Toa, triggers a supply of such energy within the Matoran in question, which causes the transformation into Toa form. Other means of becoming a Toa exist, but they are rare.

As with their Matoran counterparts, the Toa of the Northern Isles are very much like the Toa of their original world, with several differences. Toa are generally at least double the height of Matoran and have varying abilities, with common ones including the ability to use the powers Kanohi and powers deriving from their element (for example, a Toa of Fire has access to fire-based powers). They can also dispense the Toa energy responsible for their creation to generate more Toa, but using all of it will result in the user becoming a Turaga, and Toa energy will not regenerate. The same deviations as in the Matoran of the Northern Isles also exist in the land's Toa. They too gain energy by eating and ingesting food, as opposed to absorbing the energy. While certain elements were originally preconfigured as male or female, all elements can now have Toa of either, though this is rare in Toa. Further deviations exist, in that any Matoran can become a Toa and that any Toa will become a Turaga upon expending their Toa energy.

History

As with the Matoran, the first Toa of the Northern Isles arrived in the fleet of ships fleeing the Matoran Universe. The only two Toa present were a pair of Toa of Fire. Over time, as Matoran civilisation in the Isles grew, more Toa were created. As of the present era, the current number of Toa alive in the Isles, excluding Juurhinka, exceeds 1000.
