Physiology

Makuta consist of a green substance known as antidermis, which can take both liquid and gas form as the situation demands. In antidermis form, they are capable of entering and controlling bodes which do not contain spirits of other beings. While the Makuta of the Matoran Universe had access to specialist bodies designed exclusively for their use, the Makuta of the Northern Isles do not have such, and instead are normally forced to take residence in corpses or attack living beings in an attempt to gain access to their body.

Toa tend to be the target of choice of most Makuta when it comes to seeking bodies, in spite of the problem that Toa have a greater mental resistance to such efforts than most beings. A majority of Makuta who attempt to claim a Toa's body are driven to insanity by the Toa's defences, as is the Toa himself. These mergers tend to be brutal, bloodthirsty and highly egocentric, and are commonly referred to as Juurhinka, a corruption of Matoran words for "corruption" and "spirit".

History

Widespread Makuta population is said to have begun when Makuta Doomed of the Brotherhood of Makuta first arrived in the Northern Isles. Other Makuta, in antidermis form, soon started appearing in the most distant lands of the Isles; it is unknown where they came from. Initially struggling to survive, the species soon managed to gain a solid foothold as a conquering force in the Isles, slowly stealing the bodies of stronger and stronger Rahi, until they finally claimed two or three farflung islands as their own.
