Matoran are one of the two dominant species of the Northern Isles. Unlike the other, the Levoctos, the Matoran are not native to the world of the Isles, instead having arrived from another world eons ago.

Physiology

Generally, Matoran of the Northern Isles are much the same as their counterparts from their original world. Their bodies are primarily mechanical with some organic components, these being organs, muscles and the brain. They are normally small in stature, though some deviations are known to exist, and are dependent upon the Kanohi masks they wear. Each Matoran is tied to one of numerous elements which manifest themselves as certain physical traits. Via exposure to a form of energy, Matoran are capable of transforming into the next stage of their life cycle, Toa.

Numerous differences, however, exist between the two sets of Matoran. Existing in the Northern Isles evolved and differentiated the species to some extent. They now gain energy by eating and ingesting food, as opposed to simply absorbing the energy. While certain elements were originally preconfigured as male or female, all elements can now have Matoran of either.

History

The first Matoran of the Northern Isles arrived by ship during the Matoran Universe's Time Slip. These Matoran were driven from their original home in the Matoran Universe by an unknown cataclysm, the nature of which is now unknown to all. These Matoran, led by a pair of Fire Toa, are known to have sailed north through the Universe, beyond Metru Nui, and found the Isles by means of a dimensional rift which had appeared in the Great Barrier. Eventually, they found land within the Isles, and assembled their first settlement on an area which would later become known as Port Spirit, named for the belief that they were led to their new home by the Great Spirit Mata Nui.

Over the following millennia, the Matoran continued to colonise lands across the Northern Isles, the second and the most distant of which was the Daxian Archipelago. As these Matoran territories continued to grow, travel between them gained popularity. However, as each city often had its own laws which tended to differ, it was not uncommon for Matoran from one city to break the laws of another accidentally. As a result, the Turaga High Council was established to assist in preventing such incidents, by means of providing a uniform set of laws for all cities, to be debated upon by a gathering of each city's leaders. As time passed, its purpose expanded and it became the Matoran body of government.
