[edit] Personality

Zack is typically a very easygoing, optimistic guy. He'll try to make friends with just about anyone, and it takes a serious breach of trust for him to lose faith in someone. It isn't that he trusts blindly, though, and he's not an idiot, he just believes everyone has a potential to be good. He can be a bit of a goofball in any situation, even frequently in battle, but he has a serious side and he mostly knows when he shouldn't be cracking jokes. Mostly. He has a weakness for girls and considers himself something of a ladies' man even if he doesn't have a whole lot of experience.

[edit] Powers and Abilities

As a First Class SOLDIER, Zack was infused with Mako, giving him super-human strength and speed. He's also well-schooled in swordplay--enough to hold his own against Sephiroth for a little while--and has a good head for military strategy.

[edit] History

Zack was born and raised in the small town of Gongaga, living a relatively normal and thus boring childhood. When he reached the barely-capable age of thirteen, he hightailed it out of there and headed for the big city of Midgar. A quick learner, he compensated for his inexperience with a rapacious curiosity and an unflappable self-confidence. It wasn't long before he got himself a job with the rapidly-growing Shinra, Inc.--or maybe got enlisted would be the better word, since Shinra was in the midst of waging war with the faraway country of Wutai. Excited by the war stories, especially of the Great Sephiroth, Zack wanted to rise through the ranks so he could fight in the front. However, he was singled out early on as a candidate for the SOLDIER program, something which required quite a bit more training and kept him close to Midgar for the majority of it. He went on missions, naturally, but they were largely for internal disasters.

During his time in Midgar, he grew more gregarious, making numerous friends both in Shinra's ranks and out in the city, as well as picking up the art of incorrigible flirting. When he was sixteen, he met both Cloud Strife and Aeris Gainsborough, two people who would become his closest friends. Cloud being a rather shy, introverted boy from another tiny country village, Zack made it his duty to open him up a bit to the world. Aeris had already outgrown being shy, and could match--and counter if necessary--Zack's advances. It wasn't too long before he asked her out, and she became his girlfriend for the next few years.

By the time Zack made First Class in SOLDIER at the age of eighteen, the war had ended. A bit crestfallen at this lost opportunity to be a hero, he started signing up for every big mission he could. This eventually got him on the fateful mission to Nibelheim, accompanying Sephiroth, with whom he'd become friends--as much as anyone could be friends with a man like Sephiroth--and Cloud. What began as a simple Mako reactor inspection soon became a nightmare; Sephiroth uncovered the secret that had created him, snapped under its weight, and decided to take the entire town with him. Like others that day, Zack made a valiant effort to stop him, but was struck down and had to leave it to the less experienced Cloud to finish him off.

Following the disaster, Shinra collected the survivors and handed them over to Hojo for experimentation. Zack and Cloud spent the next five years as part of Hojo's efforts to create another Sephiroth. Having been in SOLDIER, Zack withstood it much better than Cloud and at last was able to mount an escape attempt, getting the two of them out of the lab and headed for Midgar. Just before they reached the city, however, Zack took a sniper's bullet intended for Cloud and wasn't able to fight off the attackers that followed. Gunned down within sight of Midgar, Zack figured that was pretty much it for him.

[edit] Relationships

Maytag - Roommate. Generally a positive, pro-goofing-around kind of person. Her mind is enough in the gutter to make Zack seem perfectly innocent, though he gets most of it and finds her boldness attractive. Part of him would really like to respond to her advances, but he's still very much hung up over Aeris.

Alphonse Elric - Roommate. A nice kid who really empathizes with others. He can get pretty down sometimes because of that and has his own troubled past to deal with, but he makes an effort to stay positive, which Zack definitely respects. For all his precociousness, Al doesn't seem ready to be on his own, so Zack has more or less adopted him as a younger brother to look after.

Rinali Li - Zack volunteered to act as her big brother before Komui showed up, and though he hasn't been able to protect her as much as he'd like, he has been around to offer a friendly ear and a shoulder to cry on. She keeps too much pent up, especially considering her bad luck with relationships; he hopes both things will change in the future.

Fuu Kasumi - A sweet girl who clearly has not had as good a life as she deserves. Zack looks out for her when he can and came to her rescue in the recent zombie attack. He's oblivious to the crush she seems to be developing.

Yukino Miyazawa - One of those people from the future, le gasp. She's friendly enough, though she doesn't strike Zack as especially open. Apparently not much of a fighter, so Zack offered to look out for her and ended up keeping the promise a lot sooner than he'd expected during the recent zombie attack.

Tamaki Suou - Zack fully approves of the kid's positive, can-tackle-anything attitude and is a member of his creation, OSJAM - Organization for Spreading Joy Around Manhattan.

Kuukaku Shiba - Roommate. Hot, but a little too aggressive for Zack's tastes. He hopes to stay on her good side so they can be friends, particularly since they live together.

Orochimaru - Roommate. Another dead guy. He has a detatched, logical way of looking at things. Zack doesn't trust him.

Reno - Zack was initially none-too-thrilled to see one of the Turks assigned to tracking him down, but Reno doesn't hold any great love for the company, so Zack's decided to let it slide. Reno didn't kill him, after all.
