[edit] Personality

Orochimaru is ruthless, driven, ambitious, and arrogant, and has the brain to back it up. Hes a genius, and easily bored when there isnt anything going on to amuse him. He takes great pleasure in causing others grief, if only to do it to make things interesting. With him, the ends justify the means used to get them, even if that means torture or death of many innocent people. Beyond that, he is also an intelligent man, with a sharp eye and mind that allow him to learn many things very quickly, as well as adapt incredibly fast. This means he can also figure out people very quickly and learn what motivates them, in order to use it against them later.

[edit] Powers and Abilities

Orochimaru displays a limited number of jutsu, although given that his goal is learn all the jutsu in the world it is reasonable to assume that his repertoire is massive. He seems to have an affinity for Earth style jutsu, although he can use Wind as well. He can summon giant snakes to use in battle. His strength lies with ninjutsu, but he is adept at genjutsu, illusions, as well. Taijutsu, fighting moves in the style of hand-to-hand combat, are not his specialty, but he can use them at a high level as well.

[edit] History

Orochimaru is a shinobi formerly of Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves. He was one of the Legendary Three; the other two being Jiraiya and Tsunade, and of the three of them he was easily the most powerful and could easily hold his own against, or even kill, a kage-level shinobi.

We know very little about Orochimarus childhood. It is assumed he was an orphan, his parents either killed in one of the many wars around this time period, or else abandoned as an infant. Either way, he grew up in the care of the Hokage and quickly showed himself to be a once-in-a-decade genius of shinobi arts. He graduated from the Academy at seven and was placed on a genin team, under the guidance of the Sandaime, Sarutobi. The three of them were precocious ninjas, establishing their identity as the Legendary Three Leafs after a great military leader of the Rain village bestowed the title on them, but still of the three, Orochimaru was best. He had an uncanny knack for jutsus, and considered this the true measure of a shinobis power. Sarutobi often saw ambition and malice in him even as a child, but was determined to change him and perhaps one day appoint Orochimaru as the Yondaime, the Fourth Hokage.

Sadly, this was not to be. As Orochimaru grew older, he grew more ambitious and dark. Still, Sarutobi hoped to change him; but when the time came to choose a successor to the Hokage title, one of Jiraiyas students was picked over Orochimaru despite the latters boasting that he was the only one worthy of the position in the village. This probably had quite a hand in later events.

Around this time, Orochimaru was working on a curse seal jutsu, one that would give the user great power but also make them Orochimarus puppet. He tested it on ten subjects, one of them being his only student Anko; she was the only one who survived. Orochimaru invited her to come with him and learn to use the power held in the seal, but Anko didnt have the malice necessary to use it and he abandoned her.

Over a period of time before this, shinobi of all ranks and backgrounds had been reported missing, everyone from genin to ANBU. Soon after Orochimaru returned to the village, he was found to be working in an underground laboratory, the bodies of the missing shinobi nearby. He had been experimenting with a forbidden jutsuone that would make him immortal. Orochimaru wanted to learn all the jutsu there were to learn in the world; ones that existed and ones that were yet to come, he said, but the human lifespan was not long enough for him to accomplish this goal, and achieve the recognition for this act. Sarutobi readied an attack but hesitated at the last moment, unwilling to kill his brightest pupil, and Orochimaru ran free and left the village of the Leaf.

At some point after this Orochimaru joined Akatsuki, an organization of S-Class missing-nins. He was partnered with Sasori, a puppetmaster from Sunagakure, and not much was heard of him until later. Its assumed that he continued his work on his immortality jutsu and perfected it but had yet to use it. The jutsu required that he find a container for his soul; the candidates soul would be subjugated and Orochimarus forcefully planted in their body, and although his previous body would die his spirit and knowledge would continue on.

Naturally, there were ways to speed his ambitions; in particular, the use of the Uchiha familys Sharingan eye to copy the techniques and commit them to memory. Luckily for Orochimaru, Uchiha Itachi eventually joined Akatsuki after killing his family. However, the Uchiha had no interest in playing Orochimarus games and Orochimaru left Akatsuki after an altercation between himself and Itachi that resulted in Orochimarus left hand being cut off (He kept it, potentially because it was the hand that his Akatsuki ring was on, although the significance of this is unknown).

After Itachi, Orochimaru transferred to another body and began looking for a replacement for when the one he inhabited wore out. Using a genjutsu to keep his appearance the same as it had always been, Orochimaru wandered the countries learning jutsus and stirring rebellion, and finding candidates for his next body. On one of these trips, he found Kaguya Kimimaro, a boy possessing a fearsome kekkei genkaithe ability to control his bone growth and density. His regeneration abilities attracted Orochimaru, and Kimimaro became the sannins apprentice. Unfortunately, Kimimaro developed a fatal wasting disease and was no longer able to be a host.

It was then that Orochimaru set his sights on Uchiha Sasuke, Itachis revenge-driven younger brother. Orochimaru had been plotting the invasion of Konoha for some time, and Sasuke offered another thing to gain from it. Orochimaru and two of his followers infiltrated the Chuunin exams, along with a team of genin from Sound who were actively competing. He placed the strongest of his curse marks on Sasukes neck, the Heaven mark, and promised him power. While still in the Forest of Death where hed marked Sasuke, Anko found him and attempted a jutsu that would kill them both. Orochimaru manipulated her curse mark and forced her to release it. He warned her not to stop the exams, as it would ruin his fun.

During the final third of the Chuunin exams, disguised as the Kazekage, Orochimaru gave the order to attack. A combination of Sand and Sound forces attacked Konoha, destroying parts of it entirely. Orochimaru faced off against the Sandaime himself, intending to kill his teacher. The battle ended in Sarutobis death, but at the cost of Orochimarus spirit arms being sealed away and his real arms becoming dead and useless, unable to conduct chakra at all.

Orochimarus attempt at taking over Konoha failed, but he left it weakened and without a leader. However, his arms caused him in extreme pain and slowly began to spread to other parts of his body, leaving them dead and useless. He went to his old teammate, the medical genius Tsunade, and asked her to heal his arms; however, she refused and a fight between Orochimaru, Jiraiya and Tsunade ensued, leaving Orochimaru weaker than before and with no choice but to send his followers out after Sasuke. He lost all of them in the process, and Sasuke was delayed so long that Orochimaru had to transfer to another body.

Two and a half years passed, and Orochimaru trained Sasuke, grooming him to become the next container for his soul. In that time, his body became weaker and weaker; his spirit corrodes the body containing it, causing the need to constantly move bodies. Eventually, he was bedridden and ill, and the time of the transfer was upon them. While Orochimaru was alone, however, Sasuke came into the room to kill the Sannin before he could transfer. They fought, and it grew so heated that Orochimaru was forced to reveal his true form; a giant white snake made out of many smaller white snakes. His experimentation on himself had caused his body to change so much that he had become a monster. Although he and Sasuke took the battle to the plane where Orochimaru transferred his soul into Sasukes body, Sasuke won out. Orochimaru is considered dead in action.
