The card will include matches resulting from scripted storylines and have results predetermined by WIW on the Rage and ShowDown brands. Storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television show, Rage and ShowDown.

As is tradition at this yearly event, the card will be highlighted by the 30-man World War Rumble match where the winner would receive a world championship match at SuperBrawl IX After defeating Chris LaGreca at Soul Survivor, Rage superstar Tyler Mane declared himself the first entrant in the World War Rumble match on the November 23 episode of Rage. On the November 30 episode of Rage, via video footage sent in by LaGreca's wife Beatrice LaGreca announced her husband, ShowDown superstar, Chris LaGreca's participation in the World War Rumble match, stating that LaGrca "has something to prove". Mane is scheduled to appear on the January 4, 2017 episode of Rage.

At Winter Warzone, on December 18, 2016, Kevin McAlmond retained the WIW World Championship against his stablemate and WIW International Champion Dustin Simpson after Matt Borske who lost to Kooper McAlmond earlier that night and his newly re-branded Evolved Revolution attacked both McAlmond and Simpson, causing the match to end in a no contest. After the match, Jesse Dern and Ryan Barnhart attacked Evolved Revolution with the help of Matt Hooper and James Burdick revealing a newly re-branded Enterprise, Leah had dubbed her Club of Chaos, revealing it was her that planned the group. The following night on Rage, Evolved Revolution revealed that they had caused the no contest for McAlmond to retain, that it was all a plan thought up by McAlmond. Rage General Manager Rex Martin then came out and told Evolved Revolution that he had talked with McAlmond before the show and was told that McAlmond had no clue of what was going on, revealing that it was a set up to break the friendship between McAlmond and Simpson, McAlmond and the Club of Chaos (including Simpson) came out through the WIW Universe and attacked Borske and Evolved Revolution, Rex Martin would go on to make a match at World War between the Club of Chaos' McAlmond and Simpson against Evolved Revolution's Borske and new member Jeremy Calvert. Both Borske and Calvert accepted the match on one term that the championship's held by McAlmond and Simpson, Martin at first declined to put the titles on the line, until McAlmond and Simpson agreed to put the titles up for grabs, just to get them in the ring. On the last Rage of 2016, Kooper McAlmond confronted Matt Borske in the locker room of the Evolved Revolution and called the group cowards for what they did at Winter Warzone, causing Borske and Evolved Revolution to attack Kooper. Later that night, Kooper would face Matt Borske, but lost by disqualification when Kevin McAlmond attacked Borske, Kooper would then confront Kevin before attacking Borske, revealing him as a new member of the Club of Chaos. Simpson later defend the WIW International Championship Calvert. The end of the match came when Matt Borske distracted Simpson and Calvert performed a Killer Effect on Simpson for a near fall. Kevin McAlmond then came out and delivered a Strikeout on Matt Borske. Calvert super kicked McAlmond and returned to the ring but was hit with a spear from Simpson, who won the match and retained the title, keeping the match at World War as is. McAlmond then delivered a Killer Effect to Calvert, and Simpson speared Borske. On the January 11, 2017 episode of Rage, Simpson defend the International Championship, this time in a Handicap match against Calvert and Corey Simms. After interference from the rest of Evolved Revolution, Calvert scored the pinfall to become the International Champion. It was later announced that the match would still take place at World War just with McAlmond defending the WIW World Championship teaming with Simpson against Borske and Calvert, who will be now defending the International Championship at the event.

At Christmas Chaos on December 4, 2016, Mark Semmler retained the WIW Heavyweight Championship against Kevin Hunter in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs Christmas Chaos match. On the December 15 episode of ShowDown, Daniel Gonzalez defeated Jax Teller, Aron Satre, and Jeremy Masiak in a four-way elimination match to earn a match for the WIW Heavyweight Championship on the December 29 episode. On the December 22 episode of ShowDown, however, Devin Sullivan confronted Gonzalez, calling him undeserving of a title shot and stated that Gonzalez only won because he was not there. The two then had a match with Gonzalez's title shot on the line, but it ended in a double count-out. Charlie Lynch then attacked both Semmler, Sullivan and Gonzalez with his with a chair. ShowDown General Manager Turf Finnegan then scheduled a fatal four way match for the WIW Heavyweight Championship between the four for the December 29 episode. On the December 29 episode of ShowDown, Mr. Money in the Bank Kevin Hunter confronted Semmler backstage telling him to keep in mind that he still had the briefcase for the next few months and told him that he may just cash-in at World War for one more title match at the World War. After Semmler retained the WIW Heavyweight Championship, Semmler was attacked by Lynch, Hunter came to the aid of Semmler, chasing Lynch to the back, Hunter would then return to the ring and cash in the Money in the Bank contract and defeated Semmler to win the WIW Heavyweight Championship, later on the new talk show Talking Show, ShowDown Commissioner Dixie Finnegan announced that Semmler has invoked his rematch against Hunter at the World War PPV.

At Winter Warzone, Kaila Matteson defeated Sari Pasma in a 30-minute Iron Man match to win her third WIW World Women's Championship, as well as ending their long feud. The following Rage Matteson declared herself the greatest WIW women's wrestler ever but was then interrupted by Kelli Kerpa, who reminded Matteson that she was 2–0 against her. Kerpa then pinned Matteson in an impromptu non-title match. However, replays showed that Matteson's foot was on the ropes before the three count. The following week, Matteson revealed that she worked with her and WIW's lawyers and Kerpa's win the previous week was revoked, but Matteson allowed Kerpa to face her in another non-title match, but this time with her sister, McKaulie Matteson as guest referee. Kerpa lost after a fast three count by McKaulie. On the January 4, 2017 episode, Kerpa defeated Victoria Lehr due to a distraction by Sari to become the number one contender for the World Women's Championship at the Royal Rumble.
