Winter Warzone (2016) is a professional wrestling pay-per-view (iPPV) event produced by WIW for the Rage brand. It took place on December 18, 2016, at The Sports Arena in Butte, Montana. This was be the first event under the Winter Warzone chronology.

The card will include matches resulting from scripted storylines and have results predetermined by WIW on the Rage brand , one of WIW's two brand divisions. Storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television show Rage.

At Soul Survivor, after an accidental superkick from WIW World Champion Kevin McAlmond, WIW Heavyweight Champion Mark Semmler eliminated WIW International Champion Dustin Simpson. The following Wednesday on Rage, Simpson confronted McAlmond about the situation and told him that he blamed him for his elimination, the two began to brawl through the arena until being separated by security a match was scheduled between McAlmond and Simpson at Winter Warzone. Later that evening, Dustin and Jesse defeated McAlmond and Matt Borske after the later walked out, Rex Martin then revealed that since Simpson had pinned McAlmond the WIW World Championship would be defended at the event. On the December 14 episode of Raw, Kevin McAlmond defeated Simpson's tag team partner, Jesse Dern that saw interferences by Simpson, Ryan Barnhart and the debuting Leah, after the match McAlmond and Simpsons brawled as did Dern and Barnhart.

The following week, after Matt Borske walked out on Kevin McAlmond, Kooper McAlmond confronted Borske about the situation and a brawl ensued between the two. On the December 7 episode of Rage, during an interview with Kooper McAlmond, Matt Borske and The Authority of Wrestling attacked Kooper until Kevin McAlmond made the save a match was made for later in the eventing, which saw Kevin and Kooper McAlmond defeated Matt Borske and Josh Erickson with Kooper pinning Josh Erickson. It was announced later that evening that Kooper McAlmond would face Matt Borske in singles competition at the event.

On the November 30 episode of Rage, Sari Pasma defeated Kaila Matteson to win the WIW World Women's Championship in a Falls Count Anywhere match. The following week, Pasma knew Matteson was going to want her rematch for title and suggested a 30–minute Steel Cage Iron Man match at Winter Warzone, which Matteson accepted. Later that night, during an in ring segment between the two Matteson cheap shotted Matteson and was overpowered by Matteson as she laid Pasma out with her finishing move. On the December 14 episode of Rage, Pasma and Matteson brawled through the arena after confronting each other about the match, being separated by security.

In September 2016 a tournament was made to crown the inaugural Dynamite Division Champion. At Clash of Champions, Josh Hooper defeated Brian Tobol in the finals of the tournament to become the inaugural WIW Dynamite Division Champion. At Halloween Hell, Hooper defeated Tobol in a rematch to retain the Dynamite Division Championship. At Soul Survivor, ShowDown superstar Joe Smith defeated Hooper by disqualification due to outside interference by Tobol. The following Wednesday on Rage, Tobol defeated Hooper in a non-title match giving Tobol a rematch at the title. On the December 7 episode of Rage, it was announced that Hooper would defend the title at Winter Warzone against Tobol and the winner of a match between, Aaron Schmalzried and Craig Remsen. Later that evening, Tobol interfered in the match with Remsen and Schmalzried cause a no contest, this lead to Tobol believing it would be just him and Hooper for the title, Tobol was then confronted by Rage General Manager Rex Martin who informed Tobol that due to his interference the match at the PPV would now be a Triple threat match with Hooper and Tobol, Schmalzried at Winter Warzone.

On the November 23 episode of Rage, Chris Gomez was the first to nearly defeat the undefeated Mad Hanson before the match ended in a double countout, but Gomez continued to try to brawl with Hanson only to be knocked out by Hanson. At Soul Survivor, Gomez nearly defeated ShowDown's WIW United Nations Champion Aron Satre when after interference from Satre's valet Jaclyn Rubbo failed, Hanson interfered costing Gomez the title. Since then Gomez has been wanting to face Hanson in a rematch. Finally on the December 14 episode of Rage, after a confrontation with Rage General Manager Rex Martin, Gomez was given the match against Hanson at Winter Warzone.

For several weeks, The Doomsday (Marc Beltran, Steve Britz and Brandon) had been hyping their WIW World Tag Team Championship reign as they were soon to break the record for longest reigning tag team champions in WIW history, On the November 23 and November 30 episodes of Rage, they retained their titles in back to back championship matches against Seth Smith and Craig Remsen and Mike Bartlett and Ryan Wilson, respectively. On the December 7 episode, Seth Smith and Craig Remsen faced Mike Bartlett and Ryan Wilson to determine the number one contenders for the championship, with Dooms Day at ringside. After a brawl occurred between all three teams, the match went undecided. A triple threat tag team championship match was then scheduled for the following week between the three teams. Dooms Day retained, tying the longest reigning Tag Team Champions. during their celebration party, Brandon accidentally sprayed champagne on Rage Commissioner Glennda McAlmond. As punishment, she put Dooms Day in a second tag team championship match against Dustin Simpson and Jesse Dern. Rex Martin then made it a triple threat match and added Kevin McAlmond and Ryan Barnhart. The Dooms Day regained again, definitively tying the longest reigning Tag Team Champions and subsequently breaking it the following day. On December 14 it was announced on WIW's facebook that The Dooms Day would defend the WIW World Tag Team Championship at Winter Warzone in a Tag team Gauntlet match against The Enterprise (Matt Hooper and James Burdick), Team Arrow (Oliver Queen and John Diggle) vs. Ryan Gleason and Brian Tobol, and Yamaha Outlaws (James Masterson and Mitch Aiken) as well as other teams announced during the match.
