[edit] Background

The card features matches that resulted from scripted storylines that had results predetermined by WIW on both the Rage and ShowDown brands. Storylines were produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night ShowDown, Thursday Night ShowDown, and Dynamites Live, the latter of which is Dynamite Division-exclusive. As is tradition, the card will be highlighted by the 30-man World War Rumble match, in which the winner earns a world championship match at SuperBrawl X for either Raw's WIW World Championship or ShowDown's WIW Heavyweight Championship. The event will also host the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match, in which the winner will earn a women's championship match at SuperBrawl X for either the WIW World Women's Championship or WIW Heavyweight Women's Championship.

On the December 20, 2017 edition of Rage, Aron Satre became the first wrestler to announce his participation in the men's World War Rumble match. On the December 28, 2017 edition of ShowDown, Brent Huntley and Corbin Edwards announced their participation in the match. On January 3, 2018, free agent Damian Lufborough announced his particpation in the World War Rumble match. Later that evening, on the episode of Rage, Chris Gomez announced his participation into the match as well.

On the November 22, 2017 episode of Rage, Dianna Agron, who was making her debut for the Rage brand, along with Jessica Rothe and Leah forming the subgroup for The Club of Chaos called the Ladies of Chaos, along with World Women's Champion Brenah McAlmond-Quinn and the other women in the group. Over the next few weeks, the group of women attacked the women of Rage backstage or after matches. On the December 20, 2017 episode of Rage, after a six women tag team match between the Ladies of Chaos (Rothe, Leah and Agron) and the team of Victoria Lehr, Brooke Slevin and Tessa Smith ended in a disqualification and a brawl ensued with the rest of the Rage women's roster, Rage Commissioner Glennda McAlmond came out and the brawl stopped. Glennda recapped the year that the women had in 2016-2017 and that she wanted the women's division to be even bigger in 2018, before announcing the first-ever women's World War Rumble match for the 2018 World War with the winner receiving a match at SuperBrawl X for either the Rage's World Women's Championship or ShowDown's Heavyweight Women's Championship. The next night on ShowDown, Heavyweight Women's Champion Avery Gold said she would be waiting for the winner at SuperBrawl, and Sarah Hicks announced her participation in the match. The following week on Rage, World Women's Champion Brenah McAlmond-Quinn talked about the Women's World War Rumble. She was then interrupted by the debuting former longest reigning NGW Women's Champion Emily Taflan confronted McAlmond-Queen and also announced her participation in the match. On the December 28, 2017 episode of ShowDown, Courtney Hope and Beatrice announced their participation in the match. On the January 3, 2018 episode of Rage, Brittany Hiatt, Melissa Mendenhall, Jessica Rothe, Dianna Agron and Leah announced their participation in the match.

On the October 18, 2017 epsisode of Rage, Chris LaGreca, who hasn't been seen for months, returned during the main event non-title steel cage match between Kevin McAlmond and Mad Hanson and helped Hanson defeat McAlmond. LaGreca was then added Eric Stevens' team, which including Hanson, at X-Chaos in the 5-on-3 handicap Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. During a WIW.com exclusive, LaGreca explained his actions of why he helped Hanson defeat McAlmond, stating that even though McAlmond and LaGreca were at the time family, it seemed McAlmond didn't care about nothing but himself when LaGreca went down with his injury, so he saw the opportunity to send McAlmond a strong message. During the TLC match at X-Chaos, Hanson and LaGreca were always arguing and fight, which also included at one point in the match Hanson accidentally hitting LaGreca with a chair, which caused LaGreca and the rest of Stevens' team to turn on Hason and crush him in a garbage truck; their team eventually lost the match. The following Wednesday on Rage, LaGreca said that he was sick and tired of hearing about how powerful Hanson was and that was why he turned on him. Hanson returned on the November 1 episode of Rage, attcking Stevens and Evolved Revolution, sending a message to LaGreca that he was coming after him next. Over the next few weeks, LaGreca and Hanson went back and forth attacking each aother, whcih caused a scheduled match between the two for the November 15 episode to not happen, and Hanson put LaGreca through the ring. This lead to another match between the two on the December 13 episode to determine the number one contender against Tyler Mane for the WIW World Championship at World War. The match ended in a double disqualification after both men knocked out officials while they continued to fight through the arena until Hanson put LaGreca through the commetators booth at ringside. It was announced at Mane would return to Rage the following week to address the situation. That episode, as Rage General Manager Rex Martin was about to address who would face the WIW World Champion at the World War, he was interrupted by Hanson, LaGreca, and Mane along with his managers Scout Taylor-Compton and Renae Geerlings. Martin scheduled a triple threat match between the three for the WIW World Championship at the World War. Afterwards, a brawl broke out between the three with Mane spearing LaGreca. As Mane made his exit, LaGreca made his way to his feet glaring at Mane on the stage, before being attacked by Kevin McAlmond, who in a interview later on said he was paying LaGreca back for attacking him. The following week, Rage Commissioner Glennda McAlmond made the match was a fatal four way match, announcing that a returning WIW World Champion would be added to the match. On the January 3 episode of Rage, Mane cut a promo about the match when former WIW World Champion, Martin McAlmond made his return, revealed as the fourth participate in the match and attacked Mane and LaGreca.

At Clash of Champions, Jax Teller defeated Elijah Eason, Charlie Lynch and Jordan Keltz in a Fatal four way match to win his second WIW United Nations Championship. On the following episode of ShowDown, Teller and the Sons of Anarchy cut a promo addressing the WIW fans and his championship win. However, before he could finish his promo he was interrupted by Eason, Lynch, and Keltz all wanting a shot at the United Nations Championship, but Teller denied their challenge's stating that he was not under contract with WIW anymore and will only defend the title when "he pleases" and when he gets a better deal, which would include other things along with it. The following week, after unsuccessful attempts of contacting Teller, ShowDown General Manager Turf Finnegan announced a tournament that would crown a contender to the title with the final two participates advancing to World War for a triple threat match for the title. Then announced that if Teller was not going to defend the championship at World War, he would be stripped of the title and the final two participates would compete for the vacant championship at World War. The tournament began that episode in which Keltz and Craig Sandvig advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Eason and Louie Blood, Jr., respectively. The final two first round matches will be held on the January 4 episode in which former partners, Michael Soto will face James Masterson and Brandon will face Daniel Block.

At Clash of Champions, Daniel Mazurek and Tony Casiano defeated Brent Huntley and Corbin Edwards to retain their jobs in a match, while also winning a shot at the WIW Heavyweight Tag Team Championship that featured both ShowDown General Manager Turf Finnegan and ShowDown Assistant General Manager John Lehr as the special guest referees. During the match, there was controversy between Turf and Lehr, which resulted in Lehr giving a fast count for Mazurek and Casiano to win. The following week on ShowDown Mazurek and Casiano recieved their Heavyweight Tag Team Championship match against champions, The Larsons, and after interferences from The Revolution, Turf, Dixie, and Lehr, the Larsons were able to retain the Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. However in the process, Casiano was injured during the match. Tensions between Turf, Dixie and Lehr continued over the next couple of weeks. On the December 28, 2017 episode of ShowDown, Lehr scheduled Mazurek to face WIW Heavyweight Champion Kevin Hunter in a non-title match as the main event, much to the disapproval of Turf and Dixie, who felt that Mazurek should not be in the main event, or facing the WIW Heavyweight Champion. Turf then scheduled Michael Nathe to face Mark Semmler, both matches ended when Revolution member, Kyle Webster interfered, giving Mazurek and Nathe wins, respectivly. The following week, Mazurek would defeat Semmler, while Nathe would defeat Hunter in another non-title match after interference from the Revolution members. Enraged at the back-to-back losses, Hunter and Semmler then requested a 3-on-2 handicap match against Mazurek, Nathe and Webster, which Lehr granted and scheduled for the World War with the added stipulation that Hunter would defend the WIW Heavyweight Championship, much to the dismay of Hunter, Semmler, Turf and Dixie.

On the November 8, 2017 episode of Rage, Jason Downing and Jacob George won the WIW World Tag Team Championship in a triple threat match. On the November 29, 2017 episode of Rage, The Grim Reapers (Kevin McAlmond and Ryan Barnhart) defeated Ryan Gleason and Brian Tobol for a future shot at the tag team titles. On the December 20, 2017 episode of Rage, Kevin McAlmond's tag team partner andThe Grim Reapers mate Ryan Barnhart was injured by Eric Stevens, following a six-man tag team match that pitted, Barnhart, McAlmond and Matt Borske against Stevens and World Tag Team Champions Downing and George. The following week, dispite both wanting to take on Stevens, McAlmond to avenge his fallen partner and Borske to avanege Stevens costing him title opportunities. Rage General Manager Rex Martin instead invoked McAlmond title shot and teamed McAlmond up with Borske to face Downing and George for the WIW World Tag Team Championship. McAlmond and Borske would defeat Downing and George for the titles. On the January 10, 2018 episode of Rage, Stevens, Downing and George confronted Rex about their contractual rematch, they were confronted by McAlmond and Borske who agreed to defend the titles, while also announcing their intentions to win the World War, althought their participation in the Rumble is not confirmed, but Rex did schedule the Tag Title match for the World War.

At Clash of Champions, The Larsons (Steven Larson and Tom Larson) retained the WIW Heavyweight Tag Team Championship against Garrett Joseph and Daniel Block, The Doomsday (Marc Beltran and Steve Britz, and Wright of Storm (Scott Wright and Harlan Storm). On the following episode of ShowDown, Wright of Storm defeated The Larsons in a non-title match, and they were awarded with a championship match on the January 4, 2018 episode of ShowDown where The Larsons retained their championship due to controversity. The following week, after Wright of Storm defeated Garrett Joseph and Daniel Block, they confronted ShowDown General Manager Turf Finnegan over the incident. After questioning if they should have to defeat The Larsons twince in the same night, Finnegan decided that at World War, The Larsons would defend the Heavyweight Tag Team Championship against Wright of Storm in a 2-out-of-3-falls match, whilte also announcing that the winner of the singles match between Scott Wright and Tom Larson next weeks on ShowDown would get to choose the stipulation for all three falls.
