The Makuta Chain is a Matoran name for an archipelago of islands to the west of the furthest Matoran civilisation, beyond Dracos Nui and the Daxian Archipelago among others, situated partially in the western centre of the Mutagen Strait. As the name suggests, the entire area is dominated by the Makuta species.

History

Before the formation of the Mutagen Strait, the Makuta Chain - though not bearing that, or any, name at the time - consisted of a series of barren flatlands. When the Mutagen Strait came to be, the islands were bathed in the energized protodermis, rapidly mutating into swampy wetlands without exception.

Millennia later, when the first Makuta emigrated to the Isles from the Matoran Universe, more Makuta began to form in the Isles, slowly claiming the Chain as their own.

Geography

All the islands in the Makuta Chain are covered in a thick swampy wetland, the energized protodermis sea surrounding it containing large quantities of aquatic plants. The air is thick with a green mist, a byproduct of the energized protodermis constantly consuming deceased plant life, and the energized protodermis itself is also tinted green. All rock and metal in the area is naturally resistant to energized protodermis, and hence is used to create Makuta buildings and sea vessels.

Some islands have been claimed by various Makuta organizations and have been dominated by enormous metal warehouses, used by the organisations as headquarters, laboratories and storehouses. Armazem, one of the more southern islands in the Chain, is an example of this.

The region is considered extremely difficult to attack due to the energized protodermis, with substances resisting the protodermis not plentiful enough outside the Chain to use to create war vessels large enough for assault purposes. As such, attempts to enter the Chain are almost always solo or small group efforts, and almost always end in disaster for the invaders.

Inhabitants

The Makuta are the sole inhabitants of the Makuta Chain. All Makuta of the Isles first appear in the deepest recesses of the swamps, but it is unknown exactly how they appear there or even come to be to begin with. No Rahi exist in the Chain, save for those taken by the Makuta and claimed for use as bodies; originally a small few species existed, but these were claimed by the earliest Makuta and are now extinct.

As a general rule, the Makuta tend to form groups of their own kind, with the intention of furthering their own survival by various means, most of which involve scientific development. Some groups seek to create strong artificial bodies for themselves, others seek simply to dominate surrounding islands and claim their people for bodies, and at least one group is known for performing twisted experiments on captives in an attempt to create bodies ideal for Makuta to use to invade surrounding islands.

Trivia

  • The Matoran originally did not have names for the individual islands, not making up any themselves; it was not until the creation of Juurhinka Gavilan that the Makuta names for the islands became known to the Matoran, as he introduced that knowledge to the Matoran. No Makuta or Juurhinka had previously done so, out of lack of interest in how the outside world perceives the Chain. Similarly, the Makuta themselves don't have a name for the Chain, instead generalizing the world outside the Chain under one name.
