Evaluation of Pi (π) 2
From Teach
What went well
- Not much!
- I asked at the end for a R-Y-G display, and most were green or yellow. But seven were red.
- I sent two pupils out, for the first time (P and B), and awarded one detention (B on Thursday).
- P did not try to refer to her formal statement about my action two weeks ago.
- Being slightly fed up afterwards is easier to bear than the apprehension before the lesson!
- The toy dustcart attracted total attention.
What could be improved
- Once again we got bogged down in a starter that I assumed would be a piece of cake (given that they had just done homework on calculating the circumference from the radius).
To Do
- Always, always work through one of the examples in a starter before letting them loose on it.
- Work through every step, very slowly, and ensure they understand each step.
- Warn them next time that they must bring their own calculators, pens, pencils and geometry sets with them. It will be an automatic detention of 15 minutes (first time).
- When issuing calculators (next time):
- Write name of each borrower on the board.
- Be very systematic about collecting them back.
- When doing a starter, put too many questions in it (e.g. 20), and then stop them after most have done 10.
- Have P chucked out the lesson if she is a problem.
- Have masses of examples and exercises.
