Background
WIW's Money in the Bank pay-per-view event centers around a match of the same name, in which multiple wrestlers use ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract that guarantees the winner a match for a world championship at any time within the next year. The contracts for 2018 specifically granted the male and female winners a match for the world championship of their respective brand. The 2019 event will include two ladder matches, one for male wrestlers and one for females, each having eight participants, evenly divided between the Raw and SmackDown brands. Male wrestlers compete for a contract to grant them a match for either Rage's World Championship or ShowDown's WIW Heavyweight Championship, while female wrestlers compete for a contract to grant them a match for either the Rage World Women's Championship or ShowDown Heavyweight Women's Championship.
Storylines
The card will include matches that result from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that build tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches, with results predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands. Storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows Wednesday Night Rage, Thursday Night ShowDown, and the cruiserweight-exclusive Dynamites Live.
At SuperBrawl XI, Ali Richards defeated Sis Bates and Avery Gold in a winner takes all triple threat match to win both the World and Heavyweight Women's Championships. She was then double booked to defend both championships at Money in the Bank. For the World Women's Championship. NGW call-up Ashley Boland attacked the double champion on both Rage and ShowDown following SuperBrawl. Boland was subsequently drafted to Rage during the Superstar Shake-up draft and defeated Beatrice LaGreca, The OSU Cowgirls of Doom member Logan Simunek, Brook Slevin, and Scout Compton in a fatal four way match, pinning LaGreca to earn a World Women's Championship match at Money in the Bank. For the WIW Heavyweight Women's Championship, former champion Avery Gold took issue that she lost her title despite not being the one who was pinned at SuperBrawl. Richard exclaimed that she would not freely give Gold a rematch and demanded new challengers. Among the named challengers was new ShowDown draftee Ashley Holshue and one half of the Women's Tag Team Champions Julie Carter. Gold then defeated Carter and Holshue in a triple threat elimination match to earn a Heavyweight Women's Championship match at Money in the Bank.
At SuperBrawl XI, Kooper McAlmond defeated Tyler Mane to win the WIW World Championship, after Kevin McAlmond, who was supposed to be a participate in the match, but was attacked backstage hit Mane with the World title. On the April 24 episode of Rage, Chief Operation Officer Rex Martin and Martin McAlmond scheduled two triple threat matches with the winners facing each other to determine McAlmond's first challenger for the title. New Rage draftee Kevin Hunter defeated fellow draftees Richard Munoz and Peter Damrow in the first triple threat match, while Eric Stevens defeated Quay Painter and new draftee Joe Linderman in the second. Hunter then defeated Stevens after Kevin McAlmond hit Stevens with a weapon to earn a WIW World Championship match against Kooper at Money in the Bank.
On the April 18 episode of ShowDown, one of WIW's owners Dixie Finnegan introduced Aaron Kelly as "the biggest acquisition in ShowDown history". Both were then interrupted by fellow new draftee Michael Phelps, who attacked Kelly and in the process hit Mrs. Finnegan with a Superman Phelps. The following week, Turf Finnegan challenged Phelps to a fight for attacking his wife, saying he knew Phelps meant to attack her. Phelps came out and was attacked from behind by Kelly, who assisted Turf in beating up Phelps. Kelly then challenged Phelps to a match at Money in the Bank, and Phelps accepted.
During "A Moment with Hiatt" on the May 1 episode of Rage, Brittany Hiatt and Dixie Finnegan revealed the first four of Rage's participants for the men's Money in the Bank ladder match: Mad Hanson, new draftee Bradlee Woehl, Quay Painter, and Eric Stevens. Kevin McAlmond confronted Turf Finnegan about not being added, but was confronted by Dixie Finnegan who told McAlmond that neither of them liked his new and improved attitude towards the two of them and that he would have to earn his spot because of his attitude, by winning a handicap match. Later, McAlmond defeated Evolved Reovlution member's Ryan Gleason and Brian Tobol to qualify for the match. On ShowDown the next night, SmackDown's four participants were revealed: Travis Capps, new draftee Chris Gomez, Quinn Noel, Brent Huntley, and Dustin Simpson. On the May 8 episode of Rage, The Finnegan's forced McAlmond to defend his spot in the Money in the Bank against Daniel Gonzalez and Michael Nathe in a handicap match, McAlmond won the match retaining his spot in the match, due to a distraction from the returning Jenna Lilley, Sis Bates and Bubba Nickles. The following week, after complaining to Turf Finnegan about the way the handicaped match ended, saying he should be in the match, Turf gave Nathe another opportunity at someone elses spot in the match this time against Mad Hanson and with the aid of Stevens and Painter, Nathe defeated Hanson to replace him in the match. Later, after McAlmond defeated Painter, he confronted The Finnegan's warning them that he was gonna continue to do what he wanted, when he wanted before executing the Killer Effect on Turf, before being chased through the crowd by Stevens, Painter and Nathe while Dixie and Huntley aided Turf.
The five participants from Rage in the women's Money in the Bank ladder match were also revealed by Brittany Hiatt and Turf Finnegan during a separate "A Moment with Hiatt" segment on the may 1 episode of Rage: Beatrice LaGreca, Victoria Lehr, Sarah Hicks, Brenah McAlmond-Quinn and Hiatt herself. ShowDown's five participants were revealed on the following night's episode of ShowDown: Julie Carter, Faith Cronin, Ashley Holshue, Kadee Jones, and Alicia Charles. Later that night, Carter and Charles defeated The Evolved Iconics (Brooke Slevin and Margaret Lamoreux) to retain the WIW Women's Tag Team Championship and their spot in the match.
At SuperBrawl XI, Turf Finnegan defeated Joe Linderman in a falls count anywhere match; during the match, Turf attacked Linderman's father. Linderman was then drafted to Rage during the Superstar Shake-Up Draft and attacked Turf as retribution. On the May 1 episode of Raw, during Linderman's match against Daniel Gonzalez, Turf distracted Linderman, causing him to lose, leading to a brawl. Later, Linderman challenged Turf to a steel cage match at Money in the Bank and Turf accepted.
