Background
The card features matches that resulted from scripted storylines that had results predetermined by WIW on both the Rage and ShowDown brands. Storylines were produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night ShowDown, Thursday Night ShowDown, and Dynamites Live, the latter of which is Dynamite Division-exclusive. As is tradition, the card will be highlighted by the 30-man World War Rumble match, in which the winner earns a world championship match at SuperBrawl X for either Raw's WIW World Championship or ShowDown's WIW Heavyweight Championship. The event will also host the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match, in which the winner will earn a women's championship match at SuperBrawl X for either the WIW World Women's Championship or WIW Heavyweight Women's Championship.
On the December 20, 2017 edition of Rage, Aron Satre became the first wrestler to announce his participation in the men's World War Rumble match.
On the November 22, 2017 episode of Rage, Dianna Agron, who was making her debut for the Rage brand, along with Jessica Rothe and Leah forming the subgroup for The Club of Chaos called the Ladies of Chaos, along with World Women's Champion Brenah McAlmond-Quinn and the other women in the group. Over the next few weeks, the group of women attacked the women of Rage backstage or after matches. On the December 20, 2017 episode of Rage, after a six women tag team match between the Ladies of Chaos (Rothe, Leah and Agron) and the team of Victoria Lehr, Brooke Slevin and Tessa Smith ended in a disqualification and a brawl ensued with the rest of the Rage women's roster, Rage Commissioner Glennda McAlmond came out and the brawl stopped. Glennda recapped the year that the women had in 2016-2017 and that she wanted the women's division to be even bigger in 2018, before announcing the first-ever women's World War Rumble match for the 2018 World War with the winner receiving a match at SuperBrawl X for either the Rage's World Women's Championship or ShowDown's Heavyweight Women's Championship. The next night on ShowDown, Heavyweight Women's Champion Avery Gold said she would be waiting for the winner at SuperBrawl, and Sarah Hicks announced her participation in the match. The following week on Rage, World Women's Champion Brenah McAlmond-Quinn talked about the Women's World War Rumble. She was then interrupted by the debuting former longest reigning NGW Women's Champion Emily Taflan confronted McAlmond-Queen and also announced her participation in the match.
On the October 18, 2017 epsisode of Rage, Chris LaGreca, who hasn't been seen for months, returned during the main event non-title steel cage match between Kevin McAlmond and Mad Hanson and helped Hanson defeat McAlmond. LaGreca was then added Eric Stevens' team, which including Hanson, at X-Chaos in the 5-on-3 handicap Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match. During a WIW.com exclusive, LaGreca explained his actions of why he helped Hanson defeat McAlmond, stating that even though McAlmond and LaGreca were at the time family, it seemed McAlmond didn't care about nothing but himself when LaGreca went down with his injury, so he saw the opportunity to send McAlmond a strong message. During the TLC match at X-Chaos, Hanson and LaGreca were always arguing and fight, which also included at one point in the match Hanson accidentally hitting LaGreca with a chair, which caused LaGreca and the rest of Stevens' team to turn on Hason and crush him in a garbage truck; their team eventually lost the match. The following Wednesday on Rage, LaGreca said that he was sick and tired of hearing about how powerful Hanson was and that was why he turned on him. Hanson returned on the November 1 episode of Rage, attcking Stevens and Evolved Revolution, sending a message to LaGreca that he was coming after him next. Over the next few weeks, LaGreca and Hanson went back and forth attacking each aother, whcih caused a scheduled match between the two for the November 15 episode to not happen, and Hanson put LaGreca through the ring. This lead to another match between the two on the December 13 episode to determine the number one contender against Tyler Mane for the WIW World Championship at World War. The match ended in a double disqualification after both men knocked out officials while they continued to fight through the arena until Hanson put LaGreca through the commetators booth at ringside. It was announced at Mane would return to Rage the following week to address the situation. That episode, as Rage General Manager Rex Martin was about to address who would face the WIW World Champion at the World War, he was interrupted by Hanson, LaGreca, and Mane along with his managers Scout Taylor-Compton and Renae Geerlings. Martin scheduled a triple threat match between the three for the WIW World Championship at the World War. Afterwards, a brawl broke out between the three with Mane spearing LaGreca. As Mane made his exit, LaGreca made his way to his feet glaring at Mane on the stage, before being attacked by Kevin McAlmond, who in a interview later on said he was paying LaGreca back for attacking him. The following week, Rage Commissioner Glennda McAlmond made the match was a fatal four way match, a video package was also show with Mane and the unknown returning WIW World Champion scheduled to return on the January 3 episode.
