Hwang Ji Min (born February 14, 1990), better known by her stage name Ya Chui Ri (Hangul:야추리) is a Chinese-Korean model and actress, mainly active in the American industry. In 2011 she made her debut in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides. Later that year after all filming was completed, she announced she will be going on an infinite hiatus due to her studies aboard in Shanghai, China with an undergraduate degree in Social Science. Her last appearance was scheduled to be in the upcoming Hollywood movie sequel of G.I.Joe.
However in mid-October 2011 she was involved in a highly public scandal when her past partying photos were leaked online. The public gave out negative reaction and her fan club went down to eight places on the chart and her university eventually decided to take back her full year scholarship but allowing entrance. In November it was announced she will be completing her final year of undergraduate course in her old university part time and devote more of her time to new roles. Since then she has appeared in Snow Piercer as well as two Fast and the Furious franchise films.

Early life
Ya Chui Ri was born February 14th, 1989, in Shanghai, China, the eldest of two children, named Hwang Zhi Min to Hwang Shi Hao (1957-1994), an Asian Pacific sailor captain who later died in an accident at sea when the actress was five and Choi Rim Yee, a nurser and later freelance writer. Ya has an younger brother Hwang Shi Min and is currently a high school student living in Hong Kong, China with the family.
In an interview, she has once recalled her childhood as financially difficult and was teased due to her two-country background. "My parents had average occupations and we lived an below average lifestyle." With her dad's death announced all of a sudden, the family at one point struggled for food. Her teenage years were equally troubled and the actress often skipped lessons in order to hang out with her friends. Once she reached sixteen she entered the work force for the the first time, becoming the family's bread winner as a make up stand assistant.
Under the encouragement of her mother who believed an education is important for the best ensured future, Ya returned to school and eventually became one of the top students. She graduated in 2008 from the Shanghai Foreign Language High School.
In the same year she began studying mathematical science and social science at the University of Pennsylvania School and half way through the course undertook part-time undergraudate option to focus on her acting career instead. She ultimately graduated in 2012.
Career
2009-2011: Street casting and early work
Y was street casted by a manager of Clumsy Media while she was in a hair salon in Seoul, Korea during an exchange trip with her university classmates in December 2008. She accepted the offer, describing it as "a once in a life time opportunity" but was rejected by the casting manager who's convinced she will not reach stardom. In an interview later in her career Ya described the condition of being offered a contract, "He said I had the looks and I could become a model easily but to join the company, I had to have more than one talent." She auditioned six months later after taking a series of acting lessons and was accepted.
During her training period of one year, Ya appeared in several magazines, including Vogue and Nylon Korea and appeared in Japanese label-mate T.Max's single Overtime... Rain;; music video. She was trained in Japanese, acting and modelling.
In 2011 she made her official debut in the Hollywood film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as a mermaid. She was later cast in Stoker by Korean director Park Chan Wook but passed the chance in order to make her official debut in Korea through the drama City Hunter.
2012: Scandal, suicide attempt and career revival
In August 2011 she was cast in G.I. Joe: Retaliation after recommendation by fellow Korean actor Lee Byung-hun. In preparation for her role Ya received sword, boxing and yoga training. Filming began several months later and finished in the early months of 2012. In June she announced the decision to put a pause on her career in order to transfer full time to the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology where she received an internaitonal scholarship to finish her graduate degree.
Three weeks after the announcement various party photos of Ya in her teenage years were uploaded online. The Korean public responed negatively immediately and even started an online petition, asking for her contract to be terminated, deeming her as a bad influence. Upon the new's influence the university announced the scholarship has been withdrawn. On September 14 she made headline news after a suicide attempt at a make up room backstage during a photoshoot from overdosing sleeping pills but was revived in time.
Her career has since took a positive turn and is known for her endorsment abilities in Korea. All of the brands she has promoted has experienced an average of 30% raise in sales, most noteable with make up brand 3Brown. During this time Ya participated in her second Korean project, the drama Faith. The project received negative reviews with disappointing ratings but her performance was praised by critics and public alike. In the Korean media she has since became noted for her sexy image and brave attitude.
In October she was cast by director Bong Joon-ho to participate in the film Snowpiercer and filming began on April 16, 2012 and finished on July 14. On May 1, Ya was cast in Fast & Furious 6 as a new character and filming began on July 30 and by December 17 it was reported that filming had concluded. On October 26, her officials confirmed participation in the upcoming sci-fi film Robopocalypse, originally set for release in 2014. However, on January 9, 2013, production company DreamWorks announced the project has been "delayed indefinitely", shortly after officials confirmed the casting will stand for the time being.
2013-2017: Marriage, pregnancy and exit from industry
In March 2013 it was leaked online that Ya was discussing the details of returning as a character in the fifth film of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise but denied to comment, citing "an agreement has not been made". Several weeks later it was announced that she will not be returning to the series. In August it was confirmed that Ya will reprise her role in Fast & Furious 7.
On January 28, 2014 it was announced that Avengers: Age of Ultron has offered Ya a role in the film after being introduced to director Joss Whedon by label mate Rowan McWylie who's already part of the casting. She reportedly attended two auditions and beat out ten other established Korean actresses for the part. Her fluency in English and previous experience in martial arts and action films was confirmed to be a huge advantage. However a week later it was reported that Ya had dropped out of filming, citing "unforeseen personal reasons". On June 2 Ya was revealed to be reprising her role for the franchise film Fast and Furious 7. On July 4 Ya was cast in the historical drama Secret Door, becoming her first Korean activity in close to three years. However merely a week later the production announced she had pulled out of filming due to "unforeseen reasons" and the role was replaced by label mate Jo Yeon Ah.
In March 2015 Ya ended her unofficial hiatus of close to two years after being confirmed as a cast in the action romance drama Masked Prosecutor. She remained inactive for one year until in December 2016 it was announced that she will be participating in the anticipated JTBC drama Woman of Dignity. Whilst the cast was well received by the public, many noted Ya is no longer at the peak of her career after her scandal and marriage, and her slow transition into sideline roles will become a permanent fixture for the years to come.
On April 6, 2017 Ya's agency officially revealed to the public that she has decided to leave the entertainment industry and her profession as an actress and model. In the announcement, it was stated that Ya will be primarily focusing on her role as a wife and mother, and has decided to move back to the United States, with the support of her husband. The drama aired in June and is her last work.

Personal life
On February 23, 2013 the Korean media reported that Ya is two months pregnant but because there has been no news regarding Ya in an relationship or married the public reacted negatively to the news. She became the most searched person in Korea across all search engines that week. Slowly other speculations started with some claiming that Ya is currently in a relationship a newly debut Korean idol member of a popular group from a major entertainment company and hence a marriage is not possible, while others speculated that even Ya herself does not know who the father is, seeing her previous record of wild partying.
On June 1, 2014 Ya announced her marriage to an unnamed Korean man on her personal Facebook page. Her agency confirmed the news the next day. On August 5 it was revealed that Ya is pregnant and is expected to deliver in the "last months of the year".
