Background
From the age of fourteen after a year of training and being signed to the music label division of Clumsy Media, Hari worked with the company to develop her sound and artistic vision. Initially she was put together with a succession of different songwriters in attempt to develop her own music, but without success. It wasn't until she began training with label mate Kotone Nakamura that enabled her "own music style to flourish." Eventually under the guidance of producer Mini Bus, Hari was introduced to writer and producer Joe "Assam" Heming and this working relationship clicked almost immediately. In mid-2012 the pair began the foundation work of what would later shape the album.
Production
Prior to begin work on By Borrison, Hari stated her intentions for the debut album to be a "cohesive" work. The album was recorded with Heming at the Clumsy Studios in Tokyo, Japan and took less than a year to complete. Hari wrote all the tracks with the production by Heming and co-writer Brain Lacome. Ten songs were included in the album's final track listing, with around five that had not been included. When choosing the amount of songs to include on the final track listing, Hari and her agency decided to keep the amount at around ten songs to avoid "filler material."
During the recording of the album, she stated that there was "no specific sound in mind when recording started", continuing to say she listened to large amount of "classical and old Hollywood melodies" and aspired to create "a record I can be proud of for years to come". For influence she cited Nakamura, British singers Birdy and Emlie Sande, Australian singer Gabriella Climi and Japanese singer Dll Ini and Ophelia. Hari also named American singer Lana Del Rey as a major influence for the album's instrumentals.
