Early life
Kita Hari was born Harri "Alexi" Kita Borrison in Paris, France to a English father and Japanese mother on April 15, 1997. Her father Alexander Harri Borrison moved from Wakefield, England and met her mother Kita "Kim" Honoka while they were both at university in Paris.
Hari wrote her first song at the age of ten, for her primary school talent show. She recalls the experience as the beginning of her passion for music, "That was the first time I thought I might be a songwriter. I always knew I wanted to be a musician. I never thought it was an option to sing anyone else's songs." The first song she wrote was called "Miss Bumblebee" – the song had proper structure and even a Middle eight.
Her potentials were soon noticed and soon caught the attention of local talent scouts and invited the thirteen-year-old to Palm Springs, California to take part in the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. That year Hari came first place in musical theatre against eighteen-year-olds and after a series of auditions was offered with an scholarship to Idyllwild Arts Academy, a boarding school which offers a college preparatory program for grades 9–12 and post-graduates, with training in music, theater, dance, visual art, creative writing, and film.
Career
2011-2018: Agent discovery, training and featuring
Hari's debut and planned album "By Borrison" was delayed numerous times as the management believed her image was not refined enough for the overly saturated teenage pop idol industry within Japan. During this period of inactivity, Hari questioned her decision in her aspirations of becoming a professional singer and song-writer.
2019-current: Debut and The Trial of K.H
Instead of releasing "By Borrison", Hari's management convinced her to record and release her sophomore effort "The Trial of K.H" as it featured much darker themes and explored avant-pop genres. The album, which would become Hari's official debut album, was released on March 10, 2020. Spotify Japan launched a "multi-level campaign behind the album", creating a multi-media playlist and "new product features" that Spotify stated "allow for vertical video content, custom assets, and editorial story-lines all with the goal of creating more meaningful and engaging context for a wide range of audiences. The album debuted at number one on the Orion Chart as well as on the Japan iTunes Albums Chart, making Hari the first artist of the new decade to have a number one debut album and the youngest artist at its time. Upon the album's debut, Hari broke the record for most simultaneously charting Hot 100 songs by a female artist, with all fifteen tracks off the album, charted on the Hot 100.
Promotions for the album were significantly delayed and impacted due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in Japan.
