Organic-Robotic Indoctrination Unit
From Yb Timeline
The Organic-Robotic Indoctrination Unit (also known as the Roboticizer) is a piece of technology developed by Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik and later perfected by a number of other organizations. The sole function of the machine is to take organic matter and process it into either its base metals or reassemble the materials into that of an autonomous machine. More advanced versions transplant the consciousness of the effected individual, though most generate a simple AI to guide the new robotic body.
The technology has been banned by the Alliance of Worlds, but it played a key role in the COUE’s Lekshi Genocide and in many of the Metal Army's campaigns. Most samples have been destroyed, and the Metal Army are the only known faction left with working ORIUs.

History
Invention and use on Mobius
The first ORIU was invented on Mobius by a scientist named Doctor Ivo Robotnik. This design was based on his first research in Living Batteries that used the brains of the indigenous creatures of Mobius as storage for an AI to power a robotic body. From here he started to develop a way to change some of the larger creatures into a form usable for his Badnik Army.
After a testing phase of several years, the first ORUI, known as the Roboticizer, was created. The design was fairly complex, and usually required an entire structure to properly use and power. First a scan would be done of the target creature, mapping out its nervous and circulatory systems. Then an algorithm would do a 1-to-1 mapping of the vital systems to that of the standard Badnik template. This could take anywhere from three to ten hours. The electrical signal-state of the brain is also recorded and stored for future use. From there an incinerator would boil down parts of the targets body into base elements, slowly adding different metals to help instantly solidify them into a shell. From there the insides would be boiled away, and replaced with the mapping of wiring modeled by the initial algorithm. In later models the transplantation of the brain activity was added, with key AI thought processes blocked.
This was a simplistic model, as a full transformation could take anywhere from one to three days and was a process that many escaped from. In the Robotnik Revolution one of the primary goals of the Freedom Fighters was the shutting down of this project. The last reported Roboticizing facility was destroyed by GUN forces in 2005.
The Confederaion and the Lekshi Genocide
Robotnik's research was later leaked to the black market, where the Confederation of Universal Equality managed to discover them. Desperate for resources after a brutal defeat at the hands of the Galactic Federation, the COUE used a basic version of the technology known as the Organic-Robotic Reprocessing Unit. This unit was a simpler version of the Roboticizer, its only function was to decompose organic matter into a metallic alloy known as Helvium. This element was stronger than the base element produced in the Roboticizing process, and allowed future reassembly into their starships and mobile suits. The COUE did continue developing basic ORIUs, however.
These units were used as a terror weapon in the Lekshi Genocide, and was a way for the COUE to both surpress the population and obtain raw materials to build their fleets. In the Liberation of Ryshi, the Galactic Federation forces under General Daliear went on a campaign of liberation across the planet and destroyed most of the COUE Indoctrination units. In the aftermath all but two units were accounted for.
The Metal Wars
Doctor Albert of Murmmington Industries began research of the ORIU, basing his research on the COUE improvements over the Roboticizer model. His actions got him fired from the industry, but he was picked up by Lurmy Murmmington to continue his research. A smaller ORIU was created that could fit in a containment tube, and sped up the process to under an hour in total. Lurmy used this machine on himself to transform into the Metal Overlord, and use the same machine on Doctor Albert. After the acquisition of the industry, these models became mass produced in hidden factories, overseen by Doctor Albert. Unlike the Roboticizer, which held the consciousness of an individual in stasis then replanted it with blocks in the core processing and memory units, the Metal Army ORIU modified the brain patterns of the individual directly. This supposedly prevented tampering with the core AI, but later it was discovered that as the consciousness advanced it would regain old memories and emotions blocked by this process.
ORIU's were only used for the transformation of individuals to machines early in the Metal Wars, until the Metal Army began to produce at a fast enough rate where such devices were deemed unnessary. Doctor Albert developed a new nanomachine version of the ORIU, the Microscopic Planetary Assimilation Network, or MPAN. This was a self-replicating nanobot hive that would decompose the organic and base geologic elements of a planet's surface and convert them into Metal Army buildings and factories. This qould allow the Metal Army to quickly convert planets into production worlds, and quickly establish base defenses. The MPAN gave the Metal Army an almost impervious edge, until it was discovered that the nanobot hive and the system that mapped the construction patterns of the nanobots were two different systems that used a short wave encrypted wireless connection. In the late stages of the war, Alliance agents were able to terminate this connection and prevent the Metal Army from establishing a strong foothold on Alliance worlds.
The Metal Army continued to use ORUIs even after the fall of Mekkai, though to no great extent. Many were discovered to be still in use by rogue Metal Army factions even after the destruction of Omega at the Citadel of Ultima.
Characteristics and Function
The ORIU's basic function is to map the organic structure of a target, isolate the electric patterns of their brain, then break down the metallic elements in their body into their most basic form. This usually involves burning away much of the carbon-based organic compounds, or fusing them with a variety of alloys in order to solidify the body into a metal-like structure. From there the insides are usually incinerated and replaced with a basic artificial nervous system, complete with an AI core. Some basic ORIUs replace the consciousness entirely, while some allow for a modified or restricted version of the target's consciousness to be placed in the new machine body.
