The Northern Isles Matoran Armed Forces, more frequently shortened to Matoran Armed Forces or MAF, is a military organization tasked with the ongoing defence of the Matoran of the Northern Isles. Brought into existence by the Turaga High Council early in Matoran civilization in the Isles, the MAF consists of several units or "Divisions", each specializing in combat in different conditions. The Lord Toa of the time is placed in charge of the MAF.

Structure

Contrary to its name, the Matoran Armed Forces consists primarily of Toa, with Matoran making up a lesser portion of the army's population. Both species partake in active combat service.

The Matoran Armed Forces is divided into numerous Divisions. Each Division trains its members for combat in certain conditions or environments. Each Division is named after a Kanohi and performs a service similar to the respective Kanohi's name.

• The Hau Division is tasked with being a front line of defence for Matoran lands in case of attack, instead of actively seeking out enemies. It comprises the largest Division of the MAF, but is also the least popular. It primarily consists of Matoran.
• The Kakama Division serves as a quick-reaction unit, trained to deploy into combat fast in the event of a surprise conflict whereas other Divisions would take more time to prepare fully. Its soldiers are trained to travel light and be prepared at all times, at the cost of some combat strength.
• The Pakari Elite is by far the most popular of the Divisions, but is also the smallest and newest. Only the most promising warriors are selected to join its ranks, and the training is so rigorous that many quit before completing it. The purpose of the Elite is to serve as an elite group of more powerful warriors for scenarios where a proper army is not practical. All Pakari Elite soldiers are Toa.
• The Kaukau Division is the navy of the MAF, specialising in combat in the sea and engaging other sea vessels. This Division serves one of the most crucial roles among the Divisions, as it is also responsible for transporting the other Divisions as necessary. It primarily consists of Ga-Matoran and Toa of Water.
• The Akaku Division is responsible for observing potential threats and occasionally committing espionage in order to gain information. A vast majority of its membership consists of Toa of Psionics, in accordance with their ability to both examine minds and shield their own; all other members are given Kanohi Komau, Suletu and Matatu and are trained to be mentally shielded.

Each Division is operated by a Division Captain and his staff; all Division Captains answer to the Lord Toa.
