Elements are a set of powers based on the forces of nature, tied to the existence of the Northern Isles. As powers, they are borne primarily by the Matoran race, but other species and creatures are known to have control over them. At present, there are eighteen known elements - sixteen are those of the original Matoran Universe, while another two are unique to the beings of the Isles.

The element of Fire, when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the control and/or use of, or resistance to, fire and heat; examples of this power in use include. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Fire, or Ta-Matoran, are capable of resisting intense heat.
  • Toa of Fire have high-level control over fire, and are capable of creating, manipulating and absorbing it.
  • Turaga of Fire have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.
• Dragon Matoran of Fire are capable of exhaling fire breath when transformed.

Stone

The element of Stone, when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the control and/or use of rocks and sand, and has a tendency to increase the physical strength of its bearers. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Stone, or Po-Matoran, have enhanced physical strength beyond that of any other Matoran variety. They are also physically slightly larger than other kinds of Matoran, to better facilitate working with stone.
  • Toa of Stone have high-level control over stone, and are capable of creating and manipulating it.
  • Turaga of Stone have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.

Earth

The element of Earth, when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the control and/or use dirt, soil and the ground in general, and in its bearers tends to better facilitate the ability to live and work underground. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Earth, or Onu-Matoran, have enhanced physical strength and enhanced ability to see in the dark. Additionally, most Onu-Matoran native to the Isles are physically shorter than the average Matoran.
  • Toa of Earth have high-level control over the earth, and are capable of creating and manipulating it.
  • Turaga of Earth have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.

Water

The element of Water, when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the creation, control and/or use of liquid water and protodermis, and in its bearers tends to better facilitate the ability to live and work in close proximity to water. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Water, or Ga-Matoran, are naturally superior swimmers and have a greater lung capacity than average.
  • Toa of Water have high-level control over water, and are capable of creating and manipulating it.
  • Turaga of Water have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.

• Matoran of Air, or Le-Matoran, are naturally more quick-footed and agile than other Matoran varieties.
  • Toa of Air have high-level control over air, and are capable of creating and manipulating it.
  • Turaga of Air have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.

The element of Ice, when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the creation, control and/or use of solid ice, snow and cold, and in its bearers tends to manifest as a resistance to cold temperatures. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Ice, or Ko-Matoran, have enhanced resilience to extreme cold.
  • Toa of Ice have high-level control over the element of ice, and are capable of creating and manipulating it.
  • Turaga of Ice have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.

Light

The element of Light, when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the control and/or use of light, an element unique in the myriad of practical uses it may have. The element also relates to the "moral" balance of light and darkness within all sapient beings, light being the product of positive emotions such as love, happiness and empathy. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Light, or Av-Matoran, are capable of firing low-power bolts of darkness from their hands.
  • Toa of Light have high-level control over light, and are capable of creating, manipulating and absorbing it.
  • Turaga of Light have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.
• With appropriate training focusing on the use of positive emotions, any sapient being can adjust their moral balance, the practical result being the development of light powers.

Darkness

The element of Darkness (also known as Shadow in terms of Matoran affiliation), when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the control and/or use of a form of sinister energy based around the manipulation of darkness, or an absence of light. The element also relates to the "moral" balance of light and darkness within all sapient beings, darkness being the product of negative emotions such as anger or aggression. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Shadow, or Kra-Matoran, are capable of firing low-power bolts of darkness from their hands. Unlike in the Matoran Universe, Kra-Matoran exist naturally as opposed to being artificially transformed from other kinds of Matoran.
  • Toa of Shadow have high-level control over darkness, and are capable of creating, manipulating and absorbing it.
  • Turaga of Shadow have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.
• Makuta have darkness as their primary power, and are capable of using it in applications unique to them, such as the generation of shadow hands and voids.
• Rahkshi of Darkness bear powers of darkness which are limited but potent in scope.
• Juurhinka have enhanced shadow powers.
• With appropriate training focusing on the use of negative emotions, any sapient being can adjust their moral balance of darkness, the practical result being the development of shadow powers.

The element of Electricity (commonly referred to as Lightning in the context of Matoran affiliation), when borne as a power, grants abilities involving the control and/or use of, or resistance to, various forms of electricity. Species known to use the element include:

• Matoran of Lightning, or Am-Matoran, are resistant to all forms of electricity and tend to have an aptitude for electronics.
  • Toa of Lightning have high-level control over electricity, and are capable of creating, manipulating and absorbing it.
  • Turaga of Lightning have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.

  • Toa of Magnetism have high-level control over magnetism.
  • Turaga of Magnetism have abilities similar to their Toa counterparts, but do not have the same capacity for controlling it.
