United States gubernatorial special elections

This is a list of gubernatorial special elections held in the United States since 2009. Such elections are rare, but occur occasionally in the case of a recall or the resignation of a sitting Governor while the position of Lieutenant Governor is vacant.
2011 Mid-Atlantic recall election

Held as a result of the success of a recall referendum during the 2010 general election against incumbent Democratic Governor Robert Cunningham. Republican Senator David Gamble defeated Democratic Congresswoman Layna Langdon.
The election was notable for the number of candidates running, numbering 30 all up. Notable individuals in the race, other than Gamble and Langdon, included Evangeline Heaton of the NEP, Joseph Mariano of the Smoker's Right's Party, William Milliken of the Conservative Party, Alfred Murdoch of the American Moderate Party, entertainer Bruce Springstein, businessman Donald Trump and independent Dean Wormer.
2015 West Coast special election

Held as a result of the resignation of former Democratic Governor Lilliam Vanleer. Democrat Congressman David Cromatie was elected Governor unopposed.
