[edit] Personality
River is a brilliant mind forced over the edge. In her insanity, she communicates cryptically, employing metaphors, double entendres, and obscure references that don't necessarily make sense even to her. She's pessimistic about people and life in general, and expresses it morbidly. She perceives the world around her in symbols just as often as she sees it for the objects which make it up, and she doesn't always understand that others see it differently. Comprehending everything and at the same time at a loss to process it all, she can range from perfect serenity to frustration and violent outbursts. In her more lucid moments, she's compassionate, playful, and still possesses an eager curiosity. She displays these traits most frequently with her brother, as well as the brattiness of sibling rivalry.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
She's extremely intuitive, sometimes to the point of telepathy and foresight, though it's typically mistaken for insanity and paranoia. Before she lost her mind, everything came easily to her. She's had an exceptional amount of schooling, easily qualifying for university at 14, and is especially talented both in mathematics and dancing. She's subconsciously conditioned as an assassin, trained in martial arts and the use of weapons ranging from primitive axes to laser rifles. However, she can't always tap into these abilities consciously.
[edit] History
River was born into a rich family, the second child of the Tams. It was clear almost immediately that she was brilliant; everything came to her as naturally as breathing. At three, she was correcting her older brother Simon's spelling, at eight she was correcting his textbooks, and by fourteen, she'd already learned much of what conventional schooling could offer her. It was then that she learned of a special academy for gifted children like her. Excited and eager to learn, she went off to the Academy with few reservations.
However, it soon became clear to her that something was wrong with the place. The things she was learning, the medical check-ups, the frequent interviews to gauge her progress, and most especially how they refused to let her see her brother when she requested it. Soon they had moved into outright experimentation and mental conditioning, playing with her brain to engineer it to perform even more incredible feats. In the process, they stripped her of her ability to control her emotions, and with the heightened perceptive abilities they gave her, she lost most of her grip on sanity. Before their efforts had gone too far, she managed to send a letter to her brother in code. It took Simon two years to find a way to come to her rescue.
With the help of an underground movement, Simon was able to smuggle her out, putting her in cryo and shipping out with the dubious crew of the Serenity. Unfortunately, they were tracked and revealed by an Alliance spy, and although the crew held no sympathies for the Alliance, learning they were carrying some of the most wanted fugitives in the galaxy did not sit well. Only through Simon's indispensability as a medic were they allowed to stay on board.
Over the next eight months, Simon and River slowly became a part of the crew, though both remained somewhat separate; Simon's relative naïveté and River's psychosis made it difficult for either of them to participate in the crew's usual theft and smuggling operations. River continued to worsen in spite of her brother's best efforts, even breaking into an Alliance hospital to use their equipment. The hospital raid also brought about a close encounter with the feds, and afterwards Serenity was forced to take jobs farther and farther out of the range of Alliance patrols.
At last it was decided that River should accompany them on a job to earn her keep. When an attack by reavers turned the routine theft far more dangerous than any of them had anticipated, Simon decided Serenity was no longer a safe place for him and his sister. Getting off at the nearest port, River wandered out of Simon's watch and saw a vidscreen commercial which held a subliminal trigger for her conditioning. She went berserk, knocking out or killing nearly everyone in the bar, stopped only when her brother arrived and spoke a phrase to make her fall asleep. With that, River's world went black.
[edit] Relationships
Simon Tam - Her beloved older brother, Simon is the most important person in the world to her and the only one she trusts. Though he can still set her off, he also has the most success in calming her down and pulling her out of her paranoid terrors. She trusts him to know reality better than her, though sometimes he's mistaken in dismissing her warnings as delusions. She feels guilty for pulling him away from living a life for himself yet again (this time with Kaylee), but is still glad he's come to look after her again. She has and would kill again to protect him.
Greed - He's undeniably interested in her and talks with her like she's sane, making two things she's unused to. Never having been close to anyone but her brother, Greed can make her uncomfortable to the point of violence, but at the same time she's fascinated by his eagerness to get close to someone as unstable as she is. He doesn't always understand or believe her, and while this is frustrating, she also respects his not taking things at face value. He's also a pretty good dancer.
Jayne Cobb - Superstitious and therefore terrified of a girl who can read his mind. With butcher's knives, betrayal, and ass-kickings in their history, Jayne and River do not exactly get along. Though she does recognize him as part of Serenity's crew and therefore more of an ally than an enemy, she remains hostile towards him. It doesn't help now that he's from farther in her world's timeline than her, confusing her senses when she's dealing with him. Sometimes, though, she just gets a kick out of being mean to him.
Mary "Lady" Arkham - Roommate. River feels she's only humoring her. She doesn't like it.
Kanda Yuu - Roommate. He needs to learn some expressions besides I-want-to-kill-you-dead. It'll get old eventually.
Kai - Roommate. She doesn't like him in the refrigerator. It ruins the kitchen as a hiding place.
