Simon is, for the most part, a calm and centred person, and, in most circumstances is able to think about things rationally and objectively � except when his loved ones get involved; namely his little sister River. However, he sacrifices more than he should for his sister�s well-being, to the extent of denying his own wishes. He is also incredibly patient and slow to anger (unless, again, River�s safety is at risk), and he tends to be quite a worrier.
Simon is also extremely polite. He uses manners as a mark of respect, but this also serves the purpose of putting a distance between him and others, even if he doesn�t realise it. He very rarely curses. However, there is a wilder side to him that could probably come out under the right circumstances - one of his MedAcad anecdotes finds him drunk and naked on a statue of Hippocrates, singing the national anthem.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
Although he isn�t nearly as brilliant as his sister, Simon is extremely intelligent, and particularly talented as a surgeon. If he sees someone he can help, he will help, even at risk to himself. He also shows a good deal of criminal aptitude when he turns his mind towards planning a heist for Mal�s crew � it turns out to be one of their most successful jobs. He can�t fight all that well, but will use his fists � and guns, too � if it�s an important matter.

Simon was born into the wealthy Tam family. He was exceedingly bright, graduating in the top 3% of his class in the Medical Academy (MedAcad), and going on to finish his internship. But where Simon was bright, his younger sister River was brilliant. Rather than this being the source of rivalry between them, or insecurity on Simon�s part, the two shared a close relationship through childhood. Simon was always willing to play games with his sister and indulge her � though he affectionately calls her a brat. He supports her decision to go to �The Academy�, and is the first to notice something amiss through River�s communications � or rather, a plea for help coded within them.
His findings were dismissed as paranoia by his parents, and he was given the choice to either forget about it and focus on his career, or risk disinheritance. Rather than submitting to them, Simon risked everything to get River out of the Academy himself. He brought River, in cryogenic stasis, to the planet Persephone. There he bartered passage aboard Mal Reynold�s Firefly, Serenity, intending to outrun Alliance spies, only to discover one on board. Ensuing circumstances caused River to be woken too soon, and Simon to become a temporary medic for the ship � though eventually Mal chooses to keep the both of them on, trusting Simon to keep an eye on his � now extremely volatile � sister.
Over time, Simon settled into Serenity and began to see it as home. He continued to support and protect his sister. Although he has consistently turbulent relationships with the captain and, in particular, Jayne Cobb, he has bonded with the crew � and, after a nearly a year, confessed his feelings to Kaylee.
