Pre-Deluge history and biography
Joshua Harmon was a veterinary before the deluge. He had a successful practice in the small town of Saluda, South Carolina. He had the knack of knowing just where the animals who he saw were hurt and how they felt. It was a knack that made him a very good veterinarian, but one he just attributed to his training and skill. After all, weren't all vets supposed to be so skilled? It was a skill that hadn't gone unnoticed, attracting offers from bigger practices elsewhere or to teach, but he had been born, raised, and intended to die in Saluda County. He had ties of family and land going back to when his German ancestors had settled the lands along the Saluda River back in the 18th century and he could imagine nothing that would cause him to want to leave.
He had a loving wife and 2.5 kids (Margaret was expecting). He regularly attended Mt. Sinai Lutheran Church until it held it's last service the Sunday after the deluge. He had a boat with which he would go fishing on Lake Murray, more to enjoy the solitude than to catch fish. He had joined the National Guard to help pay for college, but his commitment had been finished after the tour the 218th Engineering Battalion did in Iraq a couple of years ago, and he didn't want to risk being torn away from his family again, so he didn't re up, even when they offered to let him be an veterinary officer in the Medical Corps Reserve instead. He intended to be there to help raise Jamie, Josh, and the newest one.
Post-Deluge events
Compared to some areas, Saluda County was lightly touched by the wave itself. There were of course the people exploding and disappearing, and various strangers appearing, but the land itself was largely unaffected, and so while there was stress, it was a pocket of stability that might just have pulled together had it not been for Fate's Handmaiden. As a veterinarian, Joshua noticed an increase in animal cases about a week after the Deluge, but then the Handmaiden started to spread like wildfire. His son Josh fell ill on the 23rd of April and when he took him to Dr. Counts the next day, since Margaret was feeling under the weather herself, he learned that it wasn't just animals that were falling sick. Dr. Counts was swamped and had no idea what to do. By the end of the week, Joshua found himself having to tend to the good people of Saluda, instead of their animals, as Dr. Counts was dead, along with Josh and Margaret. He still had Jamie, his five-year old daughter to live for, so that saw him through his first bout of melancholia, but Fate kept his hopes up only to dash them. Jamie fell ill on May 16 and was dead two days later.
By then he had only three dying patients and he knew of no one else who survived. There was nothing he could do for them. He’d long since exhausted all the supplies of pain killers, what little he had kept in reserve, he’d given to Jamie. He had no idea why he had been untouched, but he was, so he decided to look around and try to find others. Despite all the deaths and suicides he’d seen, he still wanted to live, although he had no family left. He traipsed all over the immediate area trying to find survivors, so far he hasn't found any human survivors, just animals. Thirty chickens from the chicken farms in the area, one cow, and one billy goat, two cats. They ain't people, but at least they're company. He's been able to find plenty of supplies, but he's running low on fuel, so he's decided to stop his random wanderings. Aside from everything that's happened, he did have one further concern. At first he thought he was going crazy, but he's realized now that he really can talk with animals.
When Willow and Shawn showed up on his doorstep, indicating that they were moving on to Haven where other people were, he decided to go with them, taking along what he considered to be the most valuable of the local resources. He also planned on stopping at various places to acquire supplies he expected to be desirable but perhaps hard to find in the immediate area of Haven. Sasha showed up the evening before leaving for Haven and they quickly developed an attraction to one another, far faster than Joshua was prepared for, but one that he thinks he can handle.
