Also: minor concern: how pretty can a digital movie be?

Pretty. pretty pretty. It depends. We are more likely to have a pretty final product if we shoot in widescreen (not real widescreen, but my camera has an option gives the appearance of letterbox, while merely cutting off from top and bottom of frame).
