Had to learn the hard way.  Batts is not "graphically shot" until the next scene, when they are driving, discover he is still alive, and pull over to shoot him (beforehand they stop at tommy's mother's house to pick up a knife.  The mother is portrayed by scorsese's mom). I'd like to see the film with you.
