FAQ on Alternate Universes
What do you mean "alternate universe" version?
These are modified versions of the canon characters we know and love. The best way to think about it is with an example: there are two Ninth Doctors. The first is the canon Doctor. The second is the Ninth Doctor from a universe where the Time War never happened. He's got a more cheerful personality and, say, a beard (to distinguish). He's never met Rose Tyler, but travels with Grace Holloway, who went with him while he was the Eighth Doctor and stayed with him throughout his regeneration.
That's just one example. We currently have an AU Rose Tyler who was raised by her father, not her mother, and never met the Ninth Doctor in her universe.
The sky's the limit. The only caveat is that you have to use the same actor to portray the character. Rose Tyler is always played by Billie Piper. The Third Doctor is always played by Jon Pertwee. Et cetera.
So there could be 400 Fifth Doctors wandering around?
Yup! Imagine the cricket matches! But, seriously, if we had 400 people who wanted to play the Fifth Doctor then, sure, why not?
That makes no sense whatsoever.
No, probably not. Quite fun, though. And since this is a game, the main point of it is fun.
What were you thinking?
That people love playing the Doctor, and more Doctors means more people. And that it's always interesting to tweak with tried and true ideas in order to get something entirely different and lovely. Plus we like conflict, as roleplayers, and not only does this invite conflict (who's the real Doctor?) but it lengthens the plot of the game. Once they save the universe they still have to figure out who goes where and such. So it's both practical and amusing, at the same time.
So who's the real Doctor?
There was a series of Eighth Doctor novels that discussed alternate realities and dominant realities and all that. We consider the canon reality - that created by the television episodes - to be the dominant reality.
How do you know what universe a character is from?
We have a handy guide (right below this FAQ) that seperates every AU character into a universe. The universes are created on a "first come, first serve" basis. For example: Romana III came into the game from another universe, but a different universe that Orian Windstalker, who was the first AU in the game. Therefore, Orian is from AU 1 and Romana is from AU 2. When The Black Guardian came into the game, he was from the same universe as Romana III. There was no need to create a new universe category for him, and so he is also from AU 2.
