Background

WIW's Money in the Bank pay-per-view event centers around a match of the same name, in which multiple wrestlers use ladders to retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. The briefcase contains a contract that guarantees the winner a match for a world championship at any time within the next year. The contracts for 2018 specifically granted the male and female winners a match for the world championship of their respective brand. The 2019 event will include two ladder matches, one for male wrestlers and one for females, each having eight participants, evenly divided between the Raw and SmackDown brands. Male wrestlers compete for a contract to grant them a match for either Rage's World Championship or ShowDown's WIW Heavyweight Championship, while female wrestlers compete for a contract to grant them a match for either the Rage World Women's Championship or ShowDown Heavyweight Women's Championship.

Storylines

The card will include matches that result from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that build tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches, with results predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands. Storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows Wednesday Night Rage and Thursday Night ShowDown.

On the April 17 episode of Rage, Beatrice LaGreca, The OSU Cowgirls of Doom (Samantha Show, Samantha Clakley, and Logan Simunek) and The Evolved Iconics's Brook Slevin and Margaret Lamoreux), as well as Scout Compton all confronted Rage World and ShowDown Heavyweight Women's Champion Ali Richards, wanting to challenge for the World Women's Championship. They were interrupted by NGW call-up Ashley Boland, who was drafted to Rage during the Superstar Shake-up draft and who also attacked Richards the previous week. Boland then defeated LaGreca, Simunek, Slevin and Compton in a fatal four way match, pinning LaGreca to earn a World Women's Championship match against Richards at Money in the Bank.

At SuperBrawl XI, Kooper McAlmond defeated Tyler Mane to win the WIW World Championship, after Kevin McAlmond, who was supposed to be a participate in the match, but was attacked backstage hit Mane with the World title. On the April 24 episode of Rage, Chief Operation Officer Rex Martin and Martin McAlmond scheduled two triple threat matches with the winners facing each other to determine McAlmond's first challenger for the title. New Rage draftee Kevin Hunter defeated fellow draftees Richard Munoz and Peter Damrow in the first triple threat match, while Eric Stevens defeated Quay Painter and new draftee Joe Linderman in the second. Hunter then defeated Stevens after Kevin McAlmond hit Stevens with a weapon to earn a WIW World Championship match against Kooper at Money in the Bank.

On the April 18 episode of ShowDown, one of WIW's owners Dixie Finnegan introduced Aaron Kelly as "the biggest acquisition in ShowDown history". Both were then interrupted by fellow new draftee Michael Phelps, who attacked Kelly and in the process hit Mrs. Finnegan with a Superman Phelps. The following week, Turf Finnegan challenged Phelps to a fight for attacking his wife, saying he knew Phelps meant to attack her. Phelps came out and was attacked from behind by Kelly, who assisted Turf in beating up Phelps. Kelly then challenged Phelps to a match at Money in the Bank, and Phelps accepted.

During "A Moment of Hiatt" on the May 1 episode of Rage, Brittany Hiatt will reveal the five participants for the men's and women's Money in the Bank ladder matches.
