At the end of the Second Age, a group of people who don't exist fulfill a prophecy from times before, and bring into being something entirely new to the world- should they fail, something that, along with the rest of the world, will never be seen again.
Not that it would necessarily be any better if they succeeded. I wouldn't trust these guys for a minute...
