Ser Waymar Royce became a Sworn Brother of the Night's Watch
Three deserters of the Night's Watch were executed by Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell. The strength of the Watch fell below a thousand as it loses men to desertions and rangings.
Ser Waymar Royce, Gared and Will went out on a ranging riding north from the Wall for nine days on the track of a band of wildling raiders. Will scouted ahead and found their camp with all the wildlings apparently dead. Gared and Ser Waymar quarreled about what to do next, Gared wanting to return and Waymar wanting check out the wildlings more closely. Gared claimed the wildlings froze to death, but since the Wall had been weeping lately Waymar claimed this was not possible. Waymar ordered Will to show them the camp. Leaving Gared to guard the horses Will and Waymar walked the last stretch to find the camp empty. While Will was in a tree scouting the Others came. After a swordfight the Others slew Ser Waymar Royce and disappeared. Will had climbed down to survey the scene when Ser Waymar came back to life and strangled him.
Gared was captured outside a small holdfast near Winterfell. Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell rode out with Robb Stark, Brandon Stark, Jon Snow, Theon Greyjoy, Jory Cassel, Hullen and Harwin and 12 others to see justice done. This was the first time Bran was allowed to witness an execution. Eddard condemned Gared to death and beheaded him with Ice. Jon and Robb raced to the bridge on the way back. Jon and Robb raced to the bridge on the way back. There they found a dead direwolf, killed by a broken antler, and her five pups. Eddard allowed each of his trueborn chidren to keep a pup each. As they were leaving Jon discovered a sixth pup, an albino, which he keept as his own.
Returning home Eddard went to the godswood to cleanse himself and his sword. The children gathered in the kitchen to argue about names for the pups. His wife Catelyn Tully received news of the death of Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie and that Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms is coming to Winterfell. She went and told Eddard.
Eddard Stark sent his captain of guards, Jory Cassel, south with an honorguard to meet the king. He also sent an invitation to his brother Benjen Stark of the Night's Watch.
Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms arrived at Winterfell. Among the three hundred travelling with him were Queen Cersei, Prince Joffrey Baratheon, Princess Myrcella Baratheon, Prince Tommen Baratheon, Ser Jaime Lannister, two other knights of the Kingsguard, Tyrion Lannister and Sandor Clegane. Cersei and her younger children had travelled there in a wheelhouse. They were met at the gates by Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, his wife Lady Catelyn and their children, Robb, Sansa, Arya, Brandon and Rickon. On Robert's request he and Eddard left the others and went down to the crypt. They visited the graves of Rickard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, Brandon Stark and Lyanna Stark. They talked of the recent death of Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie. Eddard offered to take Robert Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie as his ward. King Robert refused as Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock had already accepted, but was refused by Lady Lysa. King Robert admitted he will not appoint Robert Arryn as Warden of the East as long as he is just a child. Robert offered Eddard the office of Hand of the King and to betroth Sansa to Joffrey. Eddard asked for time to consider.
A feast was held in the Great Hall of Winterfell. Jon Snow was seated among the younger squires, Lady Stark thinking it would insult the royal family to seat a bastard among them. The royal family entered the hall in procession not a foot from the place Jon Snow had been given. Lord Stark entered first escorting the queen followed by King Robert and Lady Stark. Then came the children, Rickon first who had to be urged on by Jon Snow when he came to visit. Then Robb and Myrcella, Arya and Tommen and Sansa and Joffrey. After them came Ser Jaime and Tyrion Lannister. Last came Benjen Stark and Theon Greyjoy. Lord and Lady Stark hosted the king and queen on a raised platform beneath which sat the Stark and royal children. Jon Snow got himself drunk on summerwine, all the while feeding his wolf, Ghost, under the table. The Stark children had not been permitted to bring their wolves. Benjen came to sit with Jon. During the feast Lord Stark was in a tense mood while King Robert drank all night. Jon asked Benjen to come north with him to join the Night's Watch. Benjen told Jon to come back when he was older. Jon stumbled out of the hall followed by Ghost. Outside he met with Tyrion. Tyrion counselled Jon to never forget what he is.
Ser Rodrik Cassel told Lord Eddard Stark that there were bad feeling between Robb Stark and Prince Joffrey.
Benjen Stark told Maester Luwin that Jon Snow wanted to take the black.
After they have had sex in Catelyn's bedchambers, Eddard told her he had decided to refuse King Robert's offer to become the King's Hand. Catelyn disagreed and argueed Eddard had to accept. Someone left the box from Lysa Arryn in Maester Luwin's observatory. The box contained a lens of Myr and beneath a false bottom a message from Lysa inside addressed to Catelyn written in a secret language they had made when they were little. Desmond escorted Maester Luwin to see Lord and Lady Stark. Maester Luwin was allowed to enter Catelyn's bedchamber and handed the message to her. In the message Lysa says that Jon Arryn was murdered by the queen and the Lannisters. Having read and burning the letter, Catelyn told Eddard that he now must become King Robert's Hand. Maester Luwin agreed. Eddard reluctantly accepted. He decided that Catelyn would have to stay in Winterfell to help Robb rule. Rickon will also stay, buth the other children he will bring south. Catelyn refused to let Jon Snow stay at Winterfell. Maester Luwin told them that Jon aspired to join the Night's Watch. They agree this was the best solution. Eddard would speak to his brother Benjen and later Jon.
Sansa named her wolf Lady. Arya named her wolf Nymeria, a great scandal.
Queen Cersei brought Princess Myrcella to stich together with Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, Beth Cassel and Jeyne Poole, overseen by Septa Mordane. The girls discussed Prince Jofferey, who Sansa was going marry, and Jon Snow. When Septa Mordane critized Arya's crooked stiches, she ran out of the room. She found her wolf Nymeria in the guardroom at the base of the stairs. They headed for a window in the covered bridge between the armory and the Great Keep from where they would watch the boys practicing in the yard. They found Jon Snow already there with his wolf Ghost. Jon had not been allowed to practice with the princes. Bran was fighting Prince Tommen, both clad in heavy padding and with wooden swords, watched over by Ser Rodrik Cassel, the master-at-arms. Among the spectators were Robb Stark and Theon Greyjoy and Prince Joffrey, surrounded by knights and squires in Baratheon and Lannister livery. Prince Tommen fell rolling to the ground. Ser Rodrik broke off the fight and told Lew and Donnis to help Bran and Tommen out of their armor. Ser Rodrik suggested Robb and Joffrey fight another round, Robb agreed, but Joffrey refused to fight more with wooden swords, proposing live steel instead. Ser Rodrik would only allow tourney swords, Sandor Clegane told Ser Rodrik to obey the prince. After an argument where Clegane and Joffrey made fun of Robb Stark, the princes left the yard with their retinue. Arya and Jon parted, with Arya going back to her room where she found Septa Mordane and Lady Catelyn waiting.
