House Targaryen is the former ruling house of the Seven Kingdoms.

The Targaryens are the blood of the dragon, descended from the high lords of the ancient Freehold of Valyria. Their heritage is proclaimed in a striking beauty, with lilac or indigo or violet eyes and hair of silver-gold or platinum white. To keep the blood pure House Targaryen has often followed the Valyrian custom of wedding brother to sister.

History

The Targaryens escaped the Doom of Valyria and settled on Dragonstone.

From Dragonstone Aegon I Targaryen, known as the Dragon, with his sisters Visenya and Rhaneys, sailed to conquer and become the first king of the Seven Kingdoms after he had unified them during the Wars of Conquest.

Aegon granted Storm's End to his rumoured bastard brother, Orys Baratheon, after he had defeated and slain Argilac the Arrogant, the last of the Storm Kings.

Harren the Black, King of the Isles also ruled the riverlands, however he was not well loved and many of the river lords deserted him, first amongst them Edmyn Tully, Lord of Riverrun. Harren and his line perished in the burning of Harrenhal. Afterwards Aegon granted Edmyn Tully dominion of the lands of the Trident. He allowed the surviving iron lords to chose who should have the primacy among them. They chose Vickon Greyjoy, Lord of Pyke as Lord of the Iron Islands.

The last King in the North, Torrhen Stark, known as the King Who Knelt, chose to swear fealty to Aegon rather than do battle. He therefore kept his land and continued to rule as Lord of Winterfell.

The last King of the Reach, King Mern, perished at the Field of Fire. His steward, Harlen Tyrell, surrendered Highgarden to Aegon. As reward Aegon gave him Highgarden and dominion of the Reach.

Aegon married both his sisters and fathered sons on both.

In the 37th year after Aegon's Landing, Aegon died. He was succeeded by his son with Rhaneys, Aenys I.

In 42 AL Aenys I died. He was succeeded by Aegon I's son with Visenya, Maegor I the Cruel.

In 48 AL Maegor I died. He was succeeded by Aenys I's son, Jaehaerys I the Conciliator.

In 103 AL Jaehaerys I died. He was succeeded by his grandson, Viserys I.

In 129 AL Viserys I died. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Aegon II. However the succession was disputed by Aegon's older sister, Rhaenyra Targaryen. Both perished in the following war called the Dance of Dragons.

In 131 AL Aegon III the Dragonbane, son of Rhaenyra, became king. During his reign the last of the Targaryen dragons died.

In 157 AL Aegon III died. He was succeeded by his eldest son Daeron I the Young Dragon.

Daeron I was fourteen when he conquered Dorne. The conquest lasted a summer and he lost ten thousand men taking the place and fifty trying to hold it.

In 161 AL Daeron I died at eighteen. He was succeeded by his younger brother Baelor the Blessed who was both septon and king.

In 171 AL Baelor I died. He was succeeded by his younger brother Viserys II.

In 172 AL Viserys II died. He was succeeded by his eldest son Aegon IV the Unworthy. His younger brother, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight was champion and some say lover to Queen Naerys Targaryen.

In 184 AL Aegon IV died. Daeron II, Queen Naerys' son by either Aegon or Aemon, suceeded him. Daeron II married Princess Myriah Martell and gave his own sister to the reigning Prince of Dorne and thus brought Dorne into the realm.

In 209 AL Daeron II died. He was succeeded by his second son Aerys I. Aerys I left no issue.

In 221 AL Aerys I died. He was succeeded by his younger brother Maekar I.

In 233 AL Maekar I died. He was succeeded by his fourth son Aegon V the Unlikely.

In 259 AL Aegon V died. He was succeeded by his second son Jaehaerys II.

In 262 AL Jaehaerys II died. He was succeeded by his only son Aerys II.

275 AL Viserys, second son of Aerys II Targaryen, King of the Seven Kingdoms and Queen Rhaella Targaryen, was born.

Rickard Stark, Lord of Winterfell was summoned south by King Aerys II.

Brandon Stark was strangled on the order of Aerys II Targaryen, King of the Seven Kingdoms a few days before his wedding to Catelyn Tully. His father Rickard Stark, Lord of Winterfell was forced to watch.

King Aerys demanded the heads of Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon from their warden Jon Arryn, Lord of the Eyrie. He revolted instead.

Robert Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End vowed to kill Prince Rhaegar Targaryen for what he did to Lyanna Stark.

283 AL During the Battle of the Trident Robert Baratheon, Lord of Storm's End fought Prince Rhaegar Targaryen at the ford. In the end Robert's warhammer smashed the chest of Prince Rhaegar. Rhaegar died for the woman he loved.

The Sack of King's Landing by Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock and Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell. Rhaegar's son Prince Aegon Targaryen was ripped from the breats of his mother Princess Elia and killed before her eyes. Elia and her daughter Princess Rhaenys were also killed. Ser Jaime Lannister killed Aerys II Targaryen, King of the Seven Kingdoms in the throne room. Aerys' pregnant queen Rhaella and their son Viserys III Targaryen fled to Dragonstone.

284 AL On Dragonstone Queen Rhaella Targaryen died giving birth to Daenerys Targaryen her daughter with Aerys II Targaryen, King of the Seven Kingdoms. At the same time a raging storm smashed the Targaryen fleet at anchor.

The garrison of Dragonstone was prepared to sell of the last two Targaryens when Ser Willem Darry and four loyal men broke into the nursery. He took Viserys and Daenerys with him to Braavos. Soon after Stannis Baratheon sailed for Dragonstone.

Ser Willem Darry lived with Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen in a house in Braavos. Ser Willem fell ill and after a long time in sickbed died. The servants stole all the money and left Viserys and Daenerys to their own devices.

After being put out of their house in Braavos Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen moved to Myr and then to Tyrosh, Qohor, Volantis and Lys. At some point they were forced to sell Queen Rhaella's crown.

Viserys III Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen became guests at the house of Magister Illyrio Mopatis in Pentos.

Khal Drogo visited Pentos. He was looking for a bride and invited Viserys III Targaryen and Daenerys Targaryen to a feast at his manse.

Illyrio Mopatis gifted Daenerys with cloths and jewels to wear on Khal Drogo's feast.

Viserys visited Daenerys before her bath, bringing with him the gown gifted by Magister Illyrio and warning her not to dissapoint Khal Drogo at the feast that evening. Illyrio's slaves entered. They bathed and dressed Daenerys. She went to meet Viserys and Illyrio in the entry hall. They left for the feast in Illyrio's carved palanquin. Viserys planned to take some of Khal Drogo's men and reconquer the Seven Kingdoms. Illryio reassured him that the people were waiting for their true king to return. The palanquin arrived at Drogo's manse and their names were announced by the herald. Other people attending the feast were Khal Moro and his son Rhogoro, the brother of the Archon of Tyrosh and Ser Jorah Mormont. Illyrio made his submission to Khal Drogo and present him to Daenerys and Viserys.
