Juurhinka, from the Matoran words Jutlin (corruption) and ka (spirit), is a term used to refer to a bizarre "species" created by the parasitic fusion of a Makuta and a Toa.

Overview

Toa, due to their generally high physical attributes and commodity, tend to be a prime choice for Makuta to inhabit when they are in need of a body. However, Toa are normally of much stronger mind than most creatures, thus attempting to inhabit a Toa is a painful struggle - one which cannot be aborted once commenced - which leaves both parties insane, the two insane minds merged into one hateful, bloodthirsty, brutal and mildly self-centered entity. In such a state, they are known as a Juurhinka.

A Juurhinka bears some of the abilities borne by its composite parts, though many are missing. They cannot use Kanohi, cannot create kraata, cannot shapeshift, and lose access to most of their Makuta abilities. They also lose some proficiency with the Toa's natural element. However, they become exceedingly proficent with the power of darkness, and often gain some abilities with it beyond even a lone Makuta or Toa of Shadow. The only physical change evident in the merger is that a Juurhinka's colouring is far darker than that of a normal Toa, consisting of black and a darker shade from the Toa's colouring.

Juurhinka tend to be shunned by other Makuta and are considered extremely dangerous and high-priority enemies by the Turaga High Council. They never work with other Juurhinka and, on the rare occasion they require assistance, always seek out lesser, expendable beings to do their bidding. Many Juurhinka enter the mercenary trade, and are considered some of the finest mercenaries around. Not all Juurhinka are like this; very few Toa and Makuta are stronger than normal and as such, though still subjected to the mental merge, retain their sanity and are possibly even good to a certain extent; Gavilan is the only currently living example of this.
