It does have ground combat assets, the Airfield Defence Guards. They are responsible for defending airfields, whether at home, or forward airfields, from ground and air attack. To this end, the ADG operates a variety of armoured vehicles and anti-air weapons. The Air Officer Commanding Comando de la Ayuda is Lieutenant General Manuel Sanchez.

Comando de la Ayuda's assets include:

Aircraft

  • 320 UH-1H Iroquois deployed in detachments over all of the ECAL's military and civil government airfields.

Armour

  • CVR(T) Sabre
  • CVR(T) Scimitar
  • VAB

Anti-Air Weapons

Older Systems

  • Rapier
  • M167 Towed Vulcan 20mm AA Gun
  • M192 Towed HAWK Launcher

New Systems

  • Cobra-1 Containerised Air Defence System
    • This system replaces Rapier and the M167 as last ditch anti-air systems. Cobra-1 was chosen over the Land-Based Phalanx Weapon System (LPWS)[5], and LAND RAM (a version of LPWS using SEA RAM in place of the Phalanx) for reasons of cost and ease of deployability.
  • HAWK AMRAAM [6]
    • HAWK AMRAAM is an open-architecture system combines existing HAWK launchers with existing AIM-120 AMRAAM's. A new Fire Distribution Centre acts as the command post, and a towed-version of the CEA-COBRA-2 used on the Cobra-2 in service with the Army. The M192 Towed HAWK Launcher is modified to fire up to 8 AIM-120 AMRAAM's. These missiles are not redesignated "MIM-120" as they are identical to AMRAAM's used by flying units.
    • The system's design allows for easy integration with the Cobra-1 Containerised Air Defence System.
    • This system was chosen over Cobra-2 and NASAMS [7] because of its low cost, and high commonality with existing systems. The system is entering service under a new program called "Whole Unit Cycling". In this program, an entire unit is removed from active duty, it hands over its old launchers to Latin American Aerospace (the remainder of the HAWK unit is not used), receives the HAWK-AMRAAM launchers left by the previous unit, trains, and re-enters operational service with HAWK-AMRAAM.

Airfield Defence Guards also use MILAN, and Stinger in addition to all standard small arms weapons in use with the armed forces including the FN FAL, Galil, and FN MAG. MILAN is being replaced with the Spike series, including the Spike-SR, and Spike-LR.

Comando de Sistemas
