Eights  finals were held, with the Junior events starting at 11:00am and the Open events starting at 2:00 pm. The events were all played on grass in glorious weather. A large gathering of members and their families enjoyed watching tennis of a good standard, with all matches keenly contested. The outstanding final of the day was the Mens' Open event between the defending champion, Jack Freeman, and Malcolm Parker. Who said serve and volley tennis was dead?  These two very fine players came into net at every opportunity and produced a very entertaining final. Jack won after a very long match, with the third set going to 19 - 17.

Thanks go to the umpires and the lady committee members who once again provided a fantastic home-baked cream afternoon tea. I wonder if the afternoon teas are fully appreciated by the membership, judging by the pitiful sums placed in the ''gratuity box''. (This box was conspicuously placed between the strawberry and cream sponge and the banana cake with lemon zest icing.)

CLUB TOURNAMENT 2011

Having run the Club tournament for the last three years, I am stepping down after the 2010 Vets Finals. If anyone would like to organize these events, please contact Andrew Meatyard.

On the subject of organization, over these three years I have been most disappointed with the members' apathetic approach to playing their early round matches, having enthusiastically sent in their entries. Personally I fail to comprehend tennis players doing everything not to play tennis.

An idea could well be for the events to have the eight seeds straight through to the last 16 (with byes), and there be wholesale scratchings on the earlier rounds when matches have not been completed by their due date. Any thoughts on the subject would be well received.

Graeme Boddy

Tournament Organizer.
