Match Reports (various) from Graeme Boddy (outgoing) (8th September 2010)

Report on Club Championships held Saturday 17th July

Eights finals were held, with the Junior events starting at 11:00am and the Open events starting at 2:00 pm. The events were all played on grass in glorious weather. A large gathering of members and their families enjoyed watching tennis of a good standard, with all matches keenly contested. The outstanding final of the day was the Mens' Open event between the defending champion, Jack Freeman, and Malcolm Parker. Who said serve and volley tennis was dead? These two very fine players came to the net at every opportunity and produced a very entertaining final. Jack won after a very long match, with the third set going to 19 - 17.

Thanks go to the umpires and the lady committee members who once again provided a fantastic home-baked cream afternoon tea.

The WORLD SQUASH MASTERS OVER 50s TOURNAMENT

August 2010

Bank Holiday American 30th August at 14.00 (25th August)

  • All playing members welcome.
  • Note to newbies: Each game in an American is played as a doubles match, but each doubles partnership is dissolved at the end of the set. Come as an individual—your tally at the end of the afternoon will be totalled as an individual.
  • The tournament starts with registration at 2:00pm, and play commencing at 2:15pm.
  • The tournament will finish at approximately 6:00pm.
  • Entry costs £3.00, which includes tennis balls and prizes,
  • And also includes afternoon tea at 4:00 pm.

TDLTC social mix-ins on Friday evenings continue (18th August)

Don't forget that Friday evenings are still for social tennis at TDLTC. The weather will get better!

The slot is particularly suitable for members who are capable of organising themselves into foursomes without the aid of another adult, as Peter L won't be doing his stuff for the next few weeks.

From Peter Light re. Fridays (3rd August)

The supervised Junior Mix-in sessions on Fridays (5.00-6.30pm) will not run during August. We will be in touch with a date for their re-commencement. Juniors are of course still welcome to play during this time slot.

The Adult Social Mix-in on Friday evenings (6.30-8.30pm) remain a fixture. But continued 'supervision'/organising of pairs will depend on the numbers attending.

July 2010

A Bar-related message from Steve Banham (22nd July)

I will be on holiday from 23rd July - 8th August and so the bar keys will be held by Irene McClean during that period.

Can all those members on the rota between these dates please call Irene on 020 8873 7393 to arrange collection and drop-off?

I am still missing bar keys and would be grateful if you could return by Thursday night to:

Don't forget the Family Tournament this Sunday afternoon (21st July)

The Family Tournament on Sunday 25th July starts at 2.15 pm, with an estimated finish time of 6pm. Entry is just £4 per person, which includes the cost of prizes and balls.

If you'd like to enter this tournament, please send me the names of both players in your doubles partnership, indicating which is the adult and which is the child. If there are any spare adults who would like to play but are in search of a child, or vice versa, let us know.

This is late notice. If insufficient numbers reply, we will postpone the event and run it in September instead. So do not email me any money today.

Don't forget it's FINALS DAY tomorrow (16th July)

Please come along and cheer and applaud (in between points) your favourite members at the tennis club on Saturday.

  • Junior finals will commence at 11:00am, and adult finals at 2:00pm.
  • For the adult tournaments, the Mens and Ladies Singles will be held first first, then the Mens and Ladies doubles, then the Mixed.
  • Afternoon tea will be served with homemade cakes.
  • The sequence of the junior finals is still undecided, but there will be four events, with two events taking place at the same time.

Member's Bike Stolen Yesterday Evening (6th July)

David Salisbury's bike was stolen from the tennis club last night between about 8.30 and 10.00pm. The bike was hidden behind the garages, leaning against the doors and could not be seen from the road. It was also about 10 yards from where many players were sitting outside having a drink. Whoever nicked it clearly had the nerve to walk right into the club's grounds, up and round the garages, on the off-chance that they might find a bike to walk off with. It was still light and they would have been able to hear the players just round the corner 10 yards away!

So remember: ALWAYS lock your bike, even if you think it can't be seen.

And if anyone who was at the club last night saw someone loitering, could they could contact David at david.salisbury5@ntlworld.com?

Helpers required for the Summer Party 19th June (9th June)

A plea from Bev Banham:

  • Helpers are required on Saturday 19th at 10am to set up the gazebos, collect chairs from Colets, and to decorate the area.
  • We also need help on Sunday 20th at 10am to take it all down.

Family Tournament Postponed to Sunday 25th July (8th June)

Our apologies, but the Family Tournament, which had been scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed to Sunday, 25th July, starting at 2pm. This is due to the poor weather outlook and a surfeit of events at the club during a short period.

The club calendar has been updated at http://editthis.info/tennis/Calendar.

TDLTC: Adult Club Tournaments (2nd June)

Details of who is playing whom can now be found at the court booking website. Please login to find out whom you're playing. You'll need to select the 'Competitions' tab. You'll know you've come to the right page when you see something like the picture below.

As this is the first year of our move to becoming an online club, we have to keep both the paper record and the online record going. So when you've played your match, can you write the result up on the chart on the noticeboard in the clubhouse AND send an email to Chris Lewis at chris@jaza.clara.co.uk

14th May: Coaching for New Members with Marc Codling‏

Please note that the free group coaching sessions for new members with Marc Codling are now running on Wednesdays from 7.00-8.00pm on the hard courts. These will run for five more weeks, having started on the 12th May.

The coaching coincides with the Social Mix-in evening, which has meant that the caged court is the only available hard court during the session.

Grass courts 3 to 6 should be opening this weekend. But please note the shortage of hard courts during this particular hour for the next five weeks.

10th May 2010: Lock Up Your Bikes!‏

To all TDLTC members

Please feel free to use the cycle rack provided at the Club, but do remember to lock up your bike. Yesterday evening a junior discovered at 8 o'clock that his bike had been stolen.

8th May 2010: 1. Draw for Wimbledon Tickets (Sunday 16th May) 2. Golf Day (Thursday 1st July)‏

1. WIMBLEDON TICKET DRAW—SUNDAY 16th MAY

The draw for the Wimbledon tickets will be held on Sunday 16th May at 5.00 pm. Please come along. The bar will be open. This is a vital event to attend if you are keen to go to Wimbledon this year but don't yet have a ticket. Just think: you could be present at a five-set epic with Andy Murray lasting until the early hours. Worth an hour of your Sunday, don’t you think?

All adult members (excluding mid-week and social members) who have renewed their membership this year and who are signed up as BTM members will be entered into the draw. You will need to pay for the tickets on the day so bring a cheque book!

If you are not a British Tennis member, please click on the link below to sign up. All playing members, including juniors, can join. This will help the club’s future allocation of Wimbledon tickets and eligibility for future grants and funding. Membership is free and only a few clicks away …..

http://www.lta.org.uk/britishtennismembership/

If you have not yet renewed your TDLTC membership, please contact Chris Lewis to renew before the draw, chris@jaza.clara.co.uk .

If you are not able to attend the draw on the 16th, you can send a nominee in your place as long as you let the club knows in advance. Either contact Jane Baller on janeballer@ntlworld.com or 020 8339 0023 by Saturday, or Andrew Meatyard on the day on 07846 019853.

And finally, the usual reminder: Tickets need to be chosen and paid for on the day.

2. TDLTC GOLF DAY—THURSDAY 1st JULY

A TDLTC golf day has been arranged for Thursday 1st July 2010 at The Drift Golf Club. All members are invited to this great day out. All handicaps welcome (up to 28!) The cost is £57 which includes two 18-hole rounds, lunch and prizes.

Last year was a great success and everyone had a good time. Like last year the morning session is a Stapleford competition which is an excellent leveller regardless of your handicap. The afternoon round is a fun Texas Scramble where mixed abilities can make their own contribution!

Please contact Ian Morey at ianmorey@hotmail.co.uk or on 07771 941539 for further details, or to book a place and obtain an entry form.

See you at the 19th hole!

April 2010

28th April 2010: 1. Sunday Tea Rota 2. Afternoon Drop-In‏

  1. Sunday afternoon teas. Irene and Peter will be providing tea this Sunday. The tea rota for all future Sundays this summer will be posted at the serving hatch by the kitchen, and hopefully on the website too. Please check to see whether you have been chosen. (If you have, it's a testament to your reliability and the quality of your teas.) For the time being, we are having a trial period without Saturday teas. Your feedback is always appreciated.
  2. Afternoon Drop-In . If you would like to attend a regular weekly session -- and I believe Irene is referring to weekday afternoon tennis -- please get in touch with Irene at irene@themccleans.plus.com listing your preferred days and preferred start-time (2pm or 2.30).

May 2010

Recent changes are underlined.

26th April 2010: 1. Juniors Mix-in 2. The Road to Wimbledon‏

Attention all Parents of Junior Members

1. This Friday, 30th April, the first Juniors Social Mix-in runs from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. Subject to sufficient numbers attending, from 6.45pm there will be a Junior Quiz Evening which will finish at approximately 8.00pm. (Tennis clothes are fine for the Quiz Evening.)

Parents are welcome. The bar will be open. On hand will be coaches and selected committee members to answer any questions on membership, coaching and tennis generally for the Junior and Senior sections of the club.

P.S. The Junior Social Mix-In will be a weekly event throughout the summer. The Junior Quiz Evening is a once-in-a-lifetime event.

2. Can all U14 boys and girls please check the club noticeboard, to discover whom they are playing in the 'Road to Wimbledon' draw, as the first round needs to played asap?

Thanks

25th April 2010: TDLTC Membership Renewal‏

Membership renewal is due as of 1st May 2010 and there are still a number of existing members who have yet to renew. We need your support so please do not delay.

I attach copies of the membership renewal forms and tournament entry form for this season. Hard copies can be found at the club on the notice board outside and inside the clubhouse.

If anyone wants to discuss issues arising out of the fees, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

The grass courts should be opening in the next two weeks.

I hope you will be renewing and are looking forward to the new season. Now the floodlights are in, we really do offer tennis 365 days a year.

I look forward to hearing from you.

22nd April 2010: Open Day at TDLTC -- this SATURDAY‏

Please come along and support the open day at the tennis club this Saturday, which will run from 10.30 onwards. Pay for your subs, collect your shoe-tags and get a complimentary drink at the bar (also available to those who have already paid their subs).

  • B-B-Q at 1.30 pm.
  • Afternoon teas and cakes at 4.00 pm.
  • Junior Coaching / Match to watch on two of the hard courts.

18th April 2010: Access Code for the new pavilion next to the Thames Ditton hard courts‏

Needless to say, this code must not be given to anyone else. The pavilion is our smart new members-only tennis facility -- not Jez's Crack Den. (My apologies if there is a Jez at the club.) Please let any committee member know if you suspect it's being misused.

The code will change at the start of May, and will be disclosed to each of you when you renew your subs.

For the rest of this month, the code is ...... xxxx

10th April 2010: Booking Courts + Invitation to Ross & Flo's Hog Roast Party

From Chris Lewis:

1. How to Book Courts

The committee is reviewing the weekly programme from last year, attached, in the light of the low use of the courts on some evenings. In addition the introduction of floodlighting on hard courts 7 to 9 mean that a new court booking system is required to manage the use of those courts. This online facility will also allow the grass courts to be booked for competitive matches outside of social mix-in sessions.

The intention is that all bookings should be done online to guarantee the use of the court. If you have not booked online, you may not be entitled to use the court. This may necessitate an online facility being operated at the club, in both the pavilion and clubhouse, so that bookings may be checked and made on-site.

This will be very much a new approach for the club. We need to develop processes which work for everyone as far as possible.

Finally, the new booking system requires a log-in and password for each user. These details will be sent to each member when you renew your membership for the coming season.

From Ross Prideaux:

2. Invitation to Ross & Flo's Hog Roast

“Hog Roast Drop In” June 5th from 2.00pm till late!

Fellow Players and Members and Partners who know me and Eva and have not yet met our Little FLO, please feel free to drop by Before, After or even Instead of your afternoon exercise on the courts,

Food and drink a plenty on Saturday June 5th.

Venue: 64 the Roundway, Claygate, Esher, KT10 0DW

(Google maps inaccurate except for road so link confusing. 64 is the End Terrace, bottom left of the Green Grass play area hidden by the tree! Suitable Bunting on the top floor windows will be evident.)

I am celebrating my 50th and Flo will be celebrating her 7 months!

A very casual affair but RSVP to ross@pridox.orangehome.co.uk by May 5th would be appreciated so we can cater fairly accurately.

Siblings and babies very welcome too.

9th April 2010: Tennis Club Bar Rota for May + Bar Keys Alert‏

Here's the first rota of the season from Steve Banham. Also filed on the website at http://editthis.info/tennis/Bar_News.

P.S. If ANY members still hold keys to the bar from last year or earlier, can you please hand them back to Steve, so we can make a fresh start on security this year?

6th April 2010: If you plan to use the floodlights at TDLTC this week or next ...‏

  • If you want floodlight tokens this week, phone Steve Banham on 020 8339 0565
