Odessa was the one-year home of then-future U.S. President George H. W. Bush, his wife Barbara, and their son and also future president George W. Bush. They lived in a shotgun house – one room for the three of them, with one of the few indoor toilets on the street – on 7th Street next to a whorehouse. They later moved to Odessa's rival/sister city Midland. The Bushes' former Odessa residence has been moved to the grounds of the Presidential Museum in Odessa.

These two fast-growing cities, first sparked by oil, have formed a partnership to entice new companies to come to the area. Hard work has paid off as new companies from retail to distribution to call centers have come to the area.
