Pre-Deluge history and biography
Jacqueline had been a renowned fantasy illustrator, even though she was only 28. Fans and critics praised the realistic and sensual way she painted fantasy creatures, especially faeries, angels, and of late demons. It was almost as if they existed and posed for Jacqueline.
That was because they did. Not only that, but they conversed with her as she painted their portraits. Knowing that they wished their privacy, and that she wouldn't be believed, she kept quiet about her visitors, content to paint and talk as she worked alone in her studio. But then, they began telling her painful things about what was to come, about how all would be destroyed, and not only that, when such things would come to be. She started giving her money and possessions away, convinced that soon they would be valueless, and wishing to make others happy. Her family became concerned, and because of that she confided her great secret to them, trying to warn them of what was to come.
Jacqueline's family, of course, did not believe her. They arranged to have have her confined at a private sanatorium, where she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and treatment was begun. Since she had imagined a great catastrophe would come on a particular day, her doctors decided to wait a week until it had passed to start the psychotherapy that would rebuild her psyche once the drugs had had a chance to do their work. That particular day, the Deluge happened, and afterward her doctors, at least those that remained, were not quite so sure of their earlier diagnosis. In any case, they had others who needed their care more than one non-violent schizophrenic with full sense hallucinations.
Post-Deluge events
Discharged to make space for those others, Jacqueline was given a prescription and told to check in with them on a weekly basis. She went back to her parents, but there was a problem. Her brother had vanished that day, her mother was now scared of her, and her father was sick, She didn't blame mom; Jacqueline was scared herself now that what her subjects had told her had come true. She wished they would come and tell her what to expect now, but apparently they felt betrayed by her repeating what they had told her to others.
However, once everyone Jacqueline knew was dead, her otherworldly friends took pity on her, conversing with her once more, but as she's running low on supplies, she has decided to go out from the comfortable Illinois farmhouse where she has been ensconsed and find some more.
It would be a happier story to say that Jacqueline was right and her doctors wrong, but it wouldn't be true. That her delusions predicted the Deluge was merely a coincidence. So long as she was taking her medicine, it worked. The return of the faeries, angels and devils she converses with is due not to their pity, but the medicine running out. With proper treatment she would return to normal, but will she be able to find it in a world gone mad, and would it make her any happier if she does?
