Background

As is tradition, the winner of the men's and women's World War matches will earn a world championship match of their choice at SuperBrawl XI. The men will have the choice between Raw's World Championship and ShowDown's Heavyweight Championship. The women will have the choice of either the Rage's World Women's Championship or ShowDown's Heavyweight Women's Championship.

Storylines

The card will include matches that result from scripted storylines that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches, with results predetermined by WIW's writers on the Rage and ShowDown brands. Storylines are produced on WIW's weekly television shows, Wednesday Night Rage, Thursday Night ShowDown, and the cruiserweight-exclusive Dynamites Live.

At TLC: Christmas Chaos, Fabulous Joe (Joe Smith and Kadee Jones) defeated Sandvigbuska (Craig Sandvig and Krysta Buska) (with The Sandvig Brothers) by submission to win the first season of Mixed Match Challenge. Their prize for winning was each getting the #30 spot in their respective World War Rumble matches at the pay per view.

At All Hail, Tyler Mane defeated Matt Borske and Mad Hanson to win the WIW World Championship. At TLC: Christmas Chaos, Kevin McAlmond (with Rex Martin) defeated Eric Stevens (with John Lehr) in a Christmas Chaos Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match to avoid his Money in the Bank contract to be void, as well as to earn a World Championship match against Tyler Mane at the World War pay-per-view. On the January 16 episode of Rage, Stevens and Victoria Lehr confronted McAlmond and insulted him, leading to a chase to the parking area where Stevens and Lehr hid in a limousine. McAlmond shattered the glass and broke the door off, only for part owner Rex Martin to appear, revealing that was his limo. Martin then fined McAlmond. McAlmond then argued with Martin, who then threatened to cancelled his match with Mane, but instead decided to add one more participate to the match, thus making it a triple threat match, Glennda McAlmond tried to talk Martin out of it, but Martin ignored her announcing a qualifying match on the same show. Later that night, Damian Lufborough, Quay Painter, Stevens, and Chris Gomez expressed their interests in facing Mane and McALmond at World War. Rex Martin scheduled a fatal four way match where the winner would be added to the title match, which Gomez won after defending his spot earlier in the night against Craig Sandvig.

On the November 13 episode of SmackDown, Mark Semmler defeated Kevin Hunter to win the WIW Heavyweight Championship after hitting Hunter with a low blow, thus turning heel. After failing to regain the title at TLC: Christmas Chaos, Hunter earned another opportunity at the World War by defeating Brent Huntley, Travis Capps, Richard Munoz, and Peter Damrow in a fatal five-way match on the January 3, 2019 episode of ShowDown.

At TLC: Christmas Chaos, Emily Taflan defeated Ali Richards, Avery Gold, and Kaila Matteson in a fatal four-way Christmas Chaos Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match to win the WIW Heavyweight Women's Championship. On Rage the following Wednesday, the Corporate Family (Glennda McAlmond, Rex Martin, Dixie Finnegan and Turf Finnegan) announced that they would now be running both Rage and ShowDown and announced that former champions would no longer have automatic rematch clauses, meaning that Richards would not automatically receive a rematch for the title and would instead have to earn one. After pleading their cases to Martin on the January 3, 2019 episode of ShowDown, a triple threat match between Richards, Gold, and Kadee Jones was scheduled for the following week to determine Taflan's challenger at the World War, which was won by Richards.

On the December 28, 2018, episode of Dynamites Live, Dynamites Live General Manager Brett Zanto scheduled Nick Reimer to defend the WIW Dynamite Division Championship at the World War in a fatal four-way match with his opponents to be decided in qualifying matches. The following week, Ridge Blevins and Josh Hooper qualified for the match by defeating Brian Tobol and Kyler Noel, respectively. The final spot, between Darrell Sydnor, Jr. and Aaron Schmalzried ended in a no contest, Zanto than announced a fatal five-way match for World War.

At TLC: Christmas Chaos, Sis Bates retain thed WIW World Women's Championshipo against Scout Compton. On the January 8, 2019 episode of Rage, Bates appeared on Brittany Hiatt's new show, "A Moment with Hiatt", and mentioned that she wanted to face Alicia Charles after her recent winning streak since debuting on Rage. Bates also mentioned wanting to face Brenah McAlmond-Quinn again, since the last time she fought McAlmond-Quinn, Victoria Lehr, Tessa Smith, Brook Slevin interferred and costed Brenah the match and the title. Lehr and Compton interrupted, Lehr stated that neither Brenah or Charles didn't deserve title shots and she hasn't had a title shot in months. Compton then stated that she wanted a rematch against Bates. Charles and McAlmond-Quinn came out, both humbled by Bate's comments, and challenged Compton and Lehr to a match. Rex Martin announced two qualifying matches in which the winner's would earn a championship opportunity. Charles then defeated Compton in the first qualifiying match, the second qualifying match between McAlmond-Qunn and Lehr would take place next week.

At All Hail, Turf Finnegan won the WIW World Cup tournament, replacing Joe Linderman in the finals, who was deemed unable to compete due to a pre-match assault by Michael Fonger. Following this, Linderman began a pursuit to former a tag team with Turf, claiming they could be the world's greatest tag team. Turf finally agreed to the pairing, and on the January 10, 2019 episode of ShowkDown, Lunderman challenged The Revolution (Jason Downing and Jacob George) for the WIW Heavyweight Tag Team Championship at World War, and The Revolution accepted.

During the ShowDown tapings on December 20, 2018, Jeffery Mahana defeated Corbin Edwards to win the WIW United Nations Championship (the match would air on December 27). On the Janauary 3, 2019 episode, Mahana and his wife/manager Teresa Turville were celebrating the title win, and Edwards would attack Mahana (with Turville also getting hurt in the scuffle).
